One of the reason I am really chilling right now and being careful the coin to buy more. Most of these coins have been over bought and any little thing can make them to start coming down. I am really waiting for that correction until they find a balance as there are plenty FOMOs in most of the pumped altcoin market right now. I would rather be patient, find some undervalued coins that have not pumped yet and then buy into those ones while waiting for the big guys.
I think you should invest in Ethereum. Ethereum is a reliable and promising altcoin. You can also consider ETH classic. Ark is also a good option. Consider these options.

Just buy bitcoins, they are extremely cheap right now. That would be the best bet, just hold it till the end of 2018 and for sure you won't regret it. Then probably just short the alt coins like DOGE which is extremely artificially pumped right now. A short position on that is the best right now since the pump and dumpers has already stopped pumping it.
Put most of it in Bitcoin and HODL! or you can Split between Ethereum / Ripple / Bitcoin.

Ethereum coins has better opportunity, I read a lot of positive speculations that ethcoins will reach more than $1k dollar in 2018 so it is better to invest in this coins today because it is cheaper and might really happen because ethcoins do really have a potential.
If you are big volume fan then diversify with btc, bch, eth, ltc, xrp etc and if you are a fan of new token based projects then i like amb, evx, pay, powr, cob etc

You should start investing in bitcoin first the allot some for altcoins which you think has the potential to grow from the start of the year and throughout the year 2018. Ethereum and xvg seems to be working out fine nowadays while bitcoin's value is dropping or struggling to be stable, you should invest on those altcoins now.
I recommend you start by investing in top 10 coins but add Stellar too.

$7000 is a good amount of money to start good portfolio, it now depend on how you spread your portfolio, I will tell you to put 30% in BTC and Ethereum and spread the rest around, because only few coins beat those two in 2017
