There is nothing to be surprised. Still there are a lot of people around the world even did not hear about Bitcoin and American people are no different of course. Even those who heard about bitcoin to them it's a scheme or something which will pop up soon.

We are sill in the early stage of bitcoins.

Up until now, people who are into crypto is a very small percentage among global population. So yes, it's not really surprising even if we are already in the digital age. Maybe a lot of them have heard bitcoin, but I don't think ethereum will be familiar to them. The thing is, even if they heard about bitcoin, they don't even know where to start, or how to deal with it.
Or maybe they already heard about it but didn't try to look forward to it or they are not interested at all, coz even if we adopt bitcoin to a new level there would be more people that will use fiat and other payment method than cryptocurrency. The crypto community now is in its biggest since the beginning, but it does not mean that the world already has it. It is global, yes, but not everyone knows about it. However when you tell someone or said the word crypto they will mostly think of the bitcoin. If someone really wants to know it, they would not mind searching to it.

But if big companies will start to accept bitcoin and other alts as payment method, maybe it will start the adoption stage to the masses or regular online shoppers.
As far as I know there are already companies who are trying to adopt it, the most recent rumor is with Paypal and Venmo, I honestly think they could really help crypto to grow.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/cointelegraph.com/news/93-of-brits-have-heard-of-bitcoin-but-only-4-have-bought-it-survey-shows/amp

These surveys are just a couple of examples to prove that most of the world has heard of BTC, but very few invested in it which is why adoption rates are low currently.

Actually, it's not that surprising. I don't expect that majority of them already know about Bitcoin. Even if Bitcoin is starting to gain attention in some Americans, it doesn't mean that most people you will encounter already have an idea of what it is. The percentage of the recognition of Bitcoin is still lesser compared to the whole population in America.

We should not expect much nor rush things when it comes to bitcoin and crypto adoption because we are still at the beginning of it. If that already surprised you, what more in other countries? But I think, asking them for crypto payments can be a contribution since they might consider looking about bitcoin and ethereum.

this is not only in America but in any part of the world.
I have seen a lot of people be "aware" of the terms bitcoin but they totally ignore how it works and why there is a big hype behind.
Due the media campaign related illicit shops and hidden payments a lot of people think that all cryptos are used only for illegal purposes.
Moreover no one is already understanding why there is so interest in this technology.
Because first of all, before talking about the value people should be focused in TECHNOLOGY! After this there is a value...

A lot of Americans think that chocolate milk comes from Brown cows
If you find one who does not know what is Bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies then I do think thats completely a safe bet , you can tell the person about it and explain how it works , if they own any small businesses they can might as well think about adding Bitcoins and etherum in their payment options.
It's not just America , not most people watch news nor are they active regarding what's going on in the world , therefore I do think you can try and make that a habit. Try asking people if you can pay in Bitcoins ?
This way they will at least search after you are gone that what the hell was that 😂. Maybe 30-40% not everyone. But still you will be indirectly able to help the community grow as a whole.

Not everyone knows bitcoin because of different work backgrounds, even people in international countries or maybe you don't deal with people from the crypto community or have a history of cryptocurrency users. To me, that is not surprising because they will easily adapt to cryptocurrency users if they want to.

I had two clients from America I want offer graphics designing jobs for, I demanded my payment would be in BitcoinBTC or Ethereum. To my greatest dismay, they were dumfounded on what Bitcoin or Ethereum is. I am still suprised up to this very moment. Cheesy Roll Eyes
Even in any other countries there  are people who don have any idea of what is bitcoin is in how to use it, since you give them a choice to receive your payment as crypto I am sure they will also look and search about bitcoin since they will became confused how that things works after you mention it to them .

Some of them might not read any financial news, subscribed to tech podcast, or interact with any crypto-related business so I'm not that surprised. It's not like crypto is a major payment tool either. Merchant are different of course because they need to interact with a lot of users and some of them might prefer crypto, while the other couldn't care less about it.

For example, I don't use any social media, and spend most of my time doing my job which does not involve any follow-up to the recent headline. If you talk to me about something trending on Twitter for example, I wouldn't now at all.

It's understandable as many business men still not open or interested in new adaptions or scared to try new innovations as it may lead to scam, they probably knew it but not really interested to use it. Here in my country only see Bitcoin before as a form of scam as some people use it in negative way for their advantage like in pyramid schemes but since many companies and some banks were willing to accept or use crypto in banking then people mindset were changing mostly for millenials but not in some oldies whose already contented in using the traditional system.

I am more surprised because as big as America is; they have some of the biggest channels which information is passed through across the world. A simple Google check up of what Bitcoin is wouldn't cost a thing.

We are still in the early stage of Bitcoin

I think I have to go with this.
