It is highly possible that the story is a hoax but it is not impossible for a $1 betting in parlay to win $50k.  there had been news about this kind of huge winnings in parlay bet on sports betting.  I believe the main discussion here is not the validity of the news but the behavior of a person after winning a huge sum of money on gambling since the story tells about how the news spreads fast and how the people around the winners behave.

This is not completely accurate because the higher the multiplier is, the lower your chances of winning. So, it's true that you will win a big amount of money but you need to be very lucky.
