Hi, it depend of the coints, now to many coints have a good potential. In my opinion you must study good projects and decide what you want.
I belive in IPSX go to moon in 2018. IPSX has just enough capmarket, the amount of coin circulation is not too much. IPSX easy x5 this year.
I think Zilliqa has huge potential. It's one of the few coins that are going to implement sharding.
My bet would be to got for ripple if you want to invest in cins under $1 only. But you should not limit your investments just based on current price of the coin.

You can invest in many companies, I would advise the project of credits they were traded on the dollar, and now they can be bought by 0.4 I think they will grow in a year and will be very strong
There are lots but my top 3 are XVG, Tron and TOA. XVG and TRON are my stabilizers as they are big already while TOA is my 100x possibility because of them being active and seems to be under the shadows still.

A little risky for coin alternatives under $ 1, but I'll give you a little suggestion for you to choose Ripple. Because the coins are priced quite low but I believe have potential. because last I saw Ripple was positioned the top 3 in coinmarketcap. that is enough to show that the ripple is very potential.
SIBCoins current value is pretty good to buy some and store for some time. I have invested in them too and i hope it will go up once it caches public eyes.
You shouldn't be looking at the price per coin, it's the marketcap that matters. 1 million coins at $1 is the same as 10 million coins at $0.1.

I recommend you to these altcoins. because it's have a price very low in these moments (RIPPLE, DEX, DASH & IOTA)
It will be price grow it's will give you a huge profit in future.
To buy altcoins today is a very profitable business, so today I think it's better to buy than sell, because they will grow at the same speed as bitcoin closer to summer, I think that closer to autumn altcoins will update their high prices.
The current $ price is not crucial. The higher the total supply of a coin the lower is it´s price. For good investments with big gains you have to look at the ones with low market cap. To pick a good coin you also have to study the team and the roadmap.
I think altcoin for 1$ price is too much risky, 1$ coins may be lost as the day increases in the market of cryptocurrencies, and definetely coins with cheap prices cannot last long
I think a criteria that rejects coins based on price is a little short sighted, as a coin going from $0.50 to $1 would have the same effect as a coin going from $5 to $10. And it may be hard to believe that coins may go up by $5 in price, but just take a look at Bitcoin. Who would have believed one bitcoin could cost over $10K a couple of years ago?
