Yes mew has some sort of attacks but i am quiet sure it is safe now . The main precautions you havs to take while storing Ethereum based tokens is you never publish your private key , json file or phrase anywhere and always keep paper wallet. Yeah, the DNS server hijacking has got me back then. I lose about hundreds of dollars worth of tokens.

But the security of Metamask wallet is similar to MEW, since the private key is stored locally on your PC or gadget and can be easily grabbed by malware.
