In my opinion it's not too late to invest now because all the coins are still in the development stage and there are many people around the world who don't know about cryptocurrency at all. You're not late, because right now the price of the coins become cheaper compared last year since you started this topic one year ago you can have opportunity to buy more cryptocoins to make more money. But if you already bought last year you need to hold or keep your coins until they back to the original price.

The marketcap is high. The amount of people that want the coin should not decrease within the year. 
There is no word late for the party, if in 2017 users can get profits up to thousands of percent then when the market is down we can still get profits up to hundreds of percent, rest assured that crypto's future will continue to improve.

I think if I look at prices in the past year I feel like you. but now the opportunity comes again to go to the next party.
in fact there has never been a word too late. However it is the State which now is very different from the conditions of one or two years ago. First, one project only legit ICO could generate lots of profit. but now, even a legit project alone is rarely heard.
I feel so late to the party. Coins now are very expensive, like $5800 for Bitcoin and $345 for Ethereum... then $5 - $30 for other coins. I take a look at the blockchain explorers and see big holders of coins, for example some people have 1000+ bitcoin, a lot of people have 500,000+ ethereum. These people got the coins when they were 1 penny each, now I have to pay $500 for the same coin?

Also I knew about Bitcoin when it was $30, and I knew about Ethereum when it was $7! I was alive in these time periods and was looking online and reading about these things but it all flew by!
