I believe Aeon should consider changing its ticker from AEON to XAE to conform to the ISO 4217 standard for currencies, much like XMR (Monero) and XBT (Bitcoin, on some exchanges like Kraken).

I have always found the 4 letter ticker a bit strange, and would prefer 3 letters for Aeon's ticker. I hadn't thought about exchanges being reluctant to change a ticker, but if they can be convinced, there's little to loose I guess. It will definitely make our crypto-currency easier to Google: Aeon yields a lot of false positives (41 million), while XAE … currently "only" shows 1.8 million hits.

I agree that limiting ticker to 3 letters is already too limiting, and having all of them start with x would just be silly. Perhaps there should be a standard adopted by the community, but it would have to allow 4-5 characters to realistically accommodate the number of Cryptos now and in future.

As for the state of Aeon, I'm holding thru all of this because smooth has already proven he is a competent dev, and when this upgrade is done it will be great.
Tell me a good client for mining AEON on AMD rx 550?

There is a link to an AMD GPU miner in the first post on the first page of this thread. I have tested it on the RX 400 series, so I think it will work fine on the Rx 500 series as well.

I believe Aeon should consider changing its ticker from AEON to XAE to conform to the ISO 4217 standard for currencies, much like XMR (Monero) and XBT (Bitcoin, on some exchanges like Kraken).
I've already posted similar comments on other crypto threads, but here's my general take on this:

  • The code space for X** is quite limited with only two variable letters. This has worked fine with just a handful of codes like XAU and XDR, but it will be confusing if all major cryptos start adopting the scheme.
With only two letters the codes cannot be very descriptive.
  • ISO codes are mainly for national currencies, and as such represent the old world where only nations can issue and control money. In cryptocurrencies, we have a much improved system for the new world, and I see no need to pander to the old powers. "Please give me an ISO code, I want to be taken as seriously as EUR and USD which can be printed willy-nilly at the whim of governments."

While there are many crypto coins, the reality is that there are not many crypto currencies. At this point the majority of new cryptos are not currencies but tokens for smart contract systems and various things like that. Currencies like Bitcoin, Litecoin, Monero, and Aeon, are quite different from tokens like Ethereum, Sia, Counterparty, etc. In other words, there isn't any reason for these tokens to use a standard meant for currencies, but since Aeon is meant to be a currency it should probably consider adopting this standard.

I don't disagree with you that there isn't a need to conform, but I do think the standard is nice and gives an air of professionalism to the project.

A four letter ticker doesn't look as nice in my opinion, but of course if people prefer it then that's perfectly fine too. Smiley

I think I would prefer to keep it the same and not risk any issues with Bittrex. Changing it would just confuse most people too since this isn't a super well known coin that many people are following regularly for updates etc...

Bittrex may not change it now, and that would be okay if that's how it has to be, but they'd eventually change it when Aeon gets more popular probably (and in the worst case they'd be the odd man out). The key point is that if it isn't changed soon, it will be nearly impossible to change in the future when Aeon is on as many exchanges as Monero, for example.

I don't think it would confuse anyone actually, since you already type "Aeon" into the search bar regardless since its the name of the coin as well as the ticker. The new ticker would be alongside the same name and people would easily figure it out on places like CoinMarketCap, for example. Most people would probably notice just from Bitcointalk/Reddit/Slack/IRC/etc.

I don't think being afraid of a single exchange refusing to change the ticker is something to put so much weight on, since years from now they might not even exist for all we know. The most important thing is to consider whether the ticker is preferable, and I personally think it would be a large improvement as a four letter ticker isn't very pretty.

I've mentioned this on Slack/IRC and a few people seemed to like the idea, so I figured I should also mention it here so it can be discussed.

Please voice your opinion on whether you think this is a good idea or not, as it is better to agree upon this early on when its easier to change this (as there are less exchanges to make the change on).

I don't think it's a bad idea (though I wasn't a fan really when monero did it), but apparently bittrex is really shitty about changing tickers now. Myriad changed ticker from MYR to XMY, and apparently even after someone paid them 2 BTC or so a couple months ago they still haven't changed it. So for similar low volume coin I'd expect to have to pay and still maybe be unresponsive.

at hitbtc one trader with more than 60K coins and unlimited BTC, controlling the trade.
So sometimes he pumps the price to 15-17K and it seems like there is an active trade going,
though, in reality, he is just selling to himself luring casual traders. then he drops the price by moving big 10K walls down.

Now the developer has a 450K coins donation found that we send him for doing his job, even at a current price it's like 112500$ - not bad for a side project.

small stupid boy, you don't see whole picture Sad

Me personally don't use bittrex.
I have part of my AEONs @ shitbtc (~40K).

But rate is so small so I even was too lazy to transfer coins to trading account.
You can't see my assets there.

If you want big volume you need higher rate.
You need buy support.
Buy coins and you will have volume.
Place walls to support the price.
Act!

What is the purpose of your project?

Descentralized economy.

There are a lot of descentralized services (airbnb, Uber, blablacar, kickstarter...) and the next step, is a descentralized, anonymous and secure coin, like this.

Are AEON wallets on bittrex only suspended, or are they completely gone including the AEON in the wallets?

Wallet is just locked for deposits and withdrawals. You can still sell your aeon there for btc and then do whatever you want with it. Its your money. Optionally you can transfer to hitbtc to rebuy the aeon for even cheaper than bittrex.
