So to sum it up - the price is bound to be disappointing - but we will pay it at all costs...

LOL, your comment made me laugh  Cheesy

Hysteria seems to be building ... let's all see what the price point is ... and how the reliability is ... but it does look like a 'super cloned' S1, a miner that has been quite simply bullet proof for Bitmain.

Made me laugh too when I re-read it Smiley - let me say this tho' if it wasn't for bitmain's products I wouldn't have got back into mining. He could keep us interested or lose our interest in a single blow... Tricky waters...

Congratulations, BITMAIN.

I have to disagree with the 'wait and see' part, while this was true for S2 for quite a time, there was a massive amount of units sold without any problem. Yes, we did see a lot of horrific pictures of UPS having played volleyball with the S2 deliveries (and BITMAIN maybe not having the perfect packaging strategy), but most of the deliveries had no issue.

I actually still have a couple of S1 units from the very first two auctions BITMAIN held back in 2013. Yes, those are the earlier revisions, I have actually given away some of the later revisions, because none of the S1's ever had any serious problems and are still running to this day. It's great to see an upgrade path for them, as I've been thinking of various options what to do with them.

However, the main point boils down to one word: Price.

The S2 was massively overpriced at launch, even with the coupons (but yes, I ordered, too, for support). With the S3 and especially the S1 to S3 upgrade, BITMAIN can really outprice themselves. They want margin, that's fine, but us miners are quite on the spot when it comes down to how much should the gear cost and that's a very fine line. Yes many will say it is too expensive, but BITMAIN have to win the majority over....rest will always complain.

Sidenote: Why BITMAIN and not the competition? Two words: Operating temperature. You can run these things in +70'C. Wow.

Excited to wait till the supply exceeds demand... at this rate shouldn't be too far away. KNC at 20nm, and multiple other companies at 28nm.

Smart man cause by the fall asic gear will be a dime a dozen so to speak.

I want to see what happens to btc prices along with ltc prices.

I will buy 1 at 1 BTC. Evaluate if it's as solid as the S1 then if its as good or better then I hope there are S3 coupons waiting for me in my Bitmain account to buy more Smiley
zero chance they will be 1btc in 3 days. More like 2btc. bet.

only a crazy person buys one at 2 btc.

an s-1 was as low as .33 btc after coupon  so 2.5 the hash and the  same power usd means ii is worth  2.5 x .33 = .825 btc

I figure 1btc is over pricing it just a bit.   Since 2.5 x .4 gets you 1 btc.

A 600 usd price kills the   AM rk-box

 a 1200 usd price for the s-3 makes the rk-box a steal

The real issue was the s-2 was a stone cold act of overpricing gear.

Or should I say     "A sucker is born every minute"  P.T. Barnum IIRC

And I purchased   better then any shit corsairs
 500
600 watt gear for my ants.
I have all 750 watt and up gear.

The S2 is still 3.5 BTC.  I think anyone thinking this will be $1k is pipe dreaming.
Exactly
And people dont forget the Rocket Box requires 4 - 6 pin PCI's, that means  you will have to buy at least 750 PSU to get 4x6pin pci's ($100) and a Raspberry PI and an SD card so the Rocket Box really costs alot more than 1btc.
The S3 requires same type PSU but control board is built in so no Pi or sd card needed I assume. All of the Corsair 500's and 600's that we have running the S1's will not work for the S3.

Why won't the PSU's we have for the S1 not work for the the S3 again?

guys, in your calculation i'm not seeing any reference of a customs fee, that in this case is a pain in the ass for a decent ROI. At least let's check that bitmain is declaring low values (like the amazing 120 USD computer gaming gateway Cheesy )

no customs to the usa for this item.

there is zero chance these will be less than $1000 US. bet.

I don't think there is zero chance, but I do get that they would be significantly undercutting their S2 product. In that case they would either deeply discount the remaining S2 stock or else they are already nearly out of stock on them. By pre-announcing the S3 I suspect their S2 stock is low.
There no Bitmain products for sale at any of there outlets. None. The S3 will be the main focus and a huge winner with giant demand $1000 bare minimum. Prob more like $1300. I would bet on it

That would be way too much for the hash rate, 0.9 - 1 BTC shipped at most, any more and there will be no chance of ROI, with the snowballing difficulty increases and pricey customs charges.

Don't forget about the upgrade options for both S1 and S2 owners.  Several owners may go in this direction instead of the S3, so Bitmain's thought this one through.

Alot of people may get to the Antminer S2 + upgrade kit to get to 2 TH/s...alot of possibilities for every owner, S1 through S3.

And the S4 is still coming at some point.... Shocked

Too bad the power doesn't scale as easily. I've got pairs of S1 running on Dell server power supplies. I wouldn't be able to do a 1:1 upgrade on them as-is. I'll probably look for local buyers for the S1 pairs as complete sets and skip the upgrade unless it is significantly more financially advantageous to upgrade. Here's hoping the upgrade kits are much cheaper than full kits.

They will get to a point when the old chips are all used up ... will the S2 return? Maybe/maybe not ... they will want to focus on the new chip design to power S3's, maybe an S4 ... and all those upgrades to the S1 and S2.

Quite neat really ... offering the option to revitalize your old hardware... not sure anyone in the BTC world has done this before.

Run a Bitcoin node.
I love how bitmain is so transparent about how they fuck over the mining community, which is the practice amongst all ASIC manufactures ... but bitmain uses it as marketing =) quite clever.

-----

OK.. how exactly his he doing this?  buy offering instock miners?  that work?

No, note I said every asic manufacture does it.
Look at the pricing slope. These things cost a few hundred, if that. Yet they charge an astronomical amount more to ensure miners make only a tiny fraction of profit.

Bitmain is smart though, they use that very fact as a marketing point to be like "look how our price curve allows miner to roi!!!" ... =P

Which, I know is inevitable, but just goes to show how desperate the mining community continually desires to be "lead to the slaughter" and give power to these evil companies.

I see your point, but that's just like any business in the sense that they need to sell their products at a profit.

Are you forgetting:
1) $5+(?) million in NRE costs.
2) ASIC design experience
3) Staff wages
4) Office rent and operating costs
5) All the other myriad expenses when running a business

I can't just give Joe Bloggs on the street $200 and he'll produce a Bitcoin ASIC miner for me.
