@mk4&@NotATether, I think we have been able to conclude so far that CM does not base its business on some kind of half-assed security solutions when it comes to staying out of the reach of those who would like to disable them in what they do. When we talk about mixers that have been caught in various traps over the years, we are talking about a rather amateurish job on the part of their owners - and the last case also belongs to that category.

@ChipMixer

Are you concerned about the sanctions on Tornado Cash (an ethereum mixer) and whether the Feds will come after Bitcoin mixers next - specifically yours?

was it some kind of breach. Is our privacy compromised?
It wasn't. Privacy of users was not compromised.

I know it's safe to assume that that the ChipMixer team has been pretty careful with their opsec, I wish you guys the best and please be extra careful.

Can you elaborate on what actually happened and why the website was down for those 3 days?
I would like to elaborate but I cannot. That could give adversaries some clues.

I can understand the reason you gave, it is to hide the issues from adversaries. But you being away silently and then show up with no proper explanation not even a clue makes users a bit worried, including me.

I value the service you have been providing, the whole bitcointalk community does. But if you were compromised in any way then your user's privacy is at stake too. As the coins you issue are anonymous, but there is a connection between those coins and the coins people send. That is Chipmixer. If it was not DDoS or any other technical issue then what was it? was it some kind of breach. Is our privacy compromised?

I thought it might have been a DDoS or such but it seems from your response it might be something else. If you are unable to elaborate because it might give clues to adversaries and to others that might have repercussions for your business then that is understandable but the first complaint about being unable to access your website was on 6th August yet your first post related to the issue was on 10th August.

Reading the posts between, some users seemed worried and others confused because they had not read anything from you. It is completely understandable you must have been busy sorting out the issue and getting the website operating again but making a post to reassure users might have been much appreciated by those concerned.

I do not use ChipMixer but wanted to visit the website to make some comparisons with other mixers to see what formats different websites follow (as there is no single rule/way to mix) but the website was down. I am glad your business is back up and running. It has an excellent reputation that is scam free.

Wishing you and your business continued success.

It's not my suggestion or preferred browser of choice, but there is also easy alternative option for lazy people, because brave browser supports onion links and it works with Chipmixer.
I would always suggest using Tor browser because it's much more secure, but it's always good to have some easy alternative.

Interesting, I didn't know that Brave browser has that capability (not that I would use it.)  I know there are plugins and extensions that allow Chromium to connect to onion addresses, but I don't like involving more links in the chain.  Honestly, I'm not a fan of FireFox (putting it mildly) and to this day can't understand why the Tor Project uses it as the basis for their browser.  I really wish they would switch to Chromium.

What is it about privacy that confuses you?

Some people may have used ChipMixer for the first time and found the issue when trying to use the vouchers and it could have caused distress. Others may be long time ChipMixer users that would have been more confident nothing untoward was happening and the service would be up and running as soon as possible.

ChipMixer website is up again.

Session time is 7 days, website was not available for 3 days and therefore all sessions are still alive. Please use them right now.

If you have any problem, please write us an email. All emails up to now are responded.

Adding 'Download and open Tor Browser' in the mix has virtually no effect time- and effort-wise, in my opinion.
You can even bookmark the ChipMixer link - I'd actually highly suggest that.

Is there any chance that in a near future it will be possible to mix using the .com version if you can fix the troubles that it brought?
Or the decision is final
Amount of people falling for a scams reduced drastically. I don't think we will go back to clearnet.

So what if the BTC is sitting in my session and the 7 day session expires while the site is down?  In this case I never really had the chance to withdraw the funds.
We will extend all sessions in a case like this. You can be sure no one will lose money on a site unavailability.

I was planning to do three withdraws over four days.
For this purpose we created vouchers. Vouchers never expire. Get voucher, destroy session. Get back when you're ready and take some amount, leave rest on another voucher, destroy session. Repeat...

They haven't been online since August 05, 2022. It does not sound good at all.

Nothing alarming to me. They have truly no reason to leave the business. The niche can be very profitable if things are done right

There are use cases you don't really need to care about all

not your keys, not your coins!
I often talk to people who, when it comes to use tumblers, don't really want to bother using Tor. Especially because they don't need 'absolute' privacy
Honestly, using a mixer in a useful manner already requires a non-negligible amount of time and effort.
UTXO management, change management, managing vouchers and private keys, tracking how much time has passed since your deposit...

Adding 'Download and open Tor Browser' in the mix has virtually no effect time- and effort-wise, in my opinion.
You can even bookmark the ChipMixer link - I'd actually highly suggest that.

So... those of you that were certain Chip Mixer would come back online... I am curious to know if your opinion has changed.  Do you think this is just a bad outage?  Or something bigger and worse?

I mean... we are pushing 5+ days at this point with no update whatsoever.  If the ChipMixer admins wanted to dispel the concern, they could easily update the Clearnet site with a note that they are working on the problem.

Thoughts anybody?

I'm well aware of that and I'm not saying otherwise.

It really isn't any more difficult to use TOR compared to other browsers, so I would personally never do my mixing on the clearnet site when there is a TOR version. It's like intentionally abandoning a part of your privacy.

I noticed that the Tor link v3 doesn't work anymore.
The END of ChipMixer or what is the issue?
Check out the previous couple of pages where it was discussed that the service is currently down. We are all hoping that it will be fixed soon.
