Getting artists, authors and publishers on the site is the #1 priority. I'm reaching out every way I know how to get folks interested in selling on the site.
I've already mentionned the site to a new up and coming band in Paris..

i noticed that when downloading, the "Content-Length" is not set in the http response header. this leads to the browser not displaying a progress bar.

Tl;dr: Best web store experience I've encountered. Ever. Soooo user friendly. This site deserves to succeed. Can not praise highly enough. Use this.

The only thing which sucks, and awfully at that is the content selection. Everything is awful (except the album i bought, Keys of Life is lovely). So... Get to work.

Get your stuff up there. I'm buying. (I'm looking at you ZhouTonged.) Would definitely use that for my ringtone.

Thanks elux. As I said on Reddit, elux is not employed by coinDL Tongue

I think there are a couple of things that can help. One is, if you know anyone who is publishing a download of any sort, have them email me at [email protected] and I'll help get them setup.

The second one is a demonstration which will make it easier to understand just how unique and fast the purchase process is. I wish I could buy everything like this.

I just created a bounty to encourage people (you!) to make this video: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/bounty-9-btc-total-coindl-demo-videos-using-mobile-bitcoin-app-with-qr-code-75468

An update: Since launch, we now have the album by Justin Porter that is leading in sales and a song called Welcome to Love with a solid harmonic feel. Another ringtone has been added and more content is in preparation to go live on the site soon.

The response has been great so far. Thanks for reading,

David Sterry

Tried it. Loved it.  Cool

Posted my first impressions to reddit:

Cool. I bought the Keys of Life album after briefly listening to the preview. Soooo relaxing.

So... Allow me to briefly share my experience. No login required. Download available in < 10 seconds. Download was super fast. Hands down user experience I've had in any web store. The whole process, from "I want this" to listening to the album on my computer took maybe 2 minutes. This is the future, gentlemen. iTMS, Steam, EA Origin etc. seem positively obsolete after trying coinDL. Will definitely use this site again (and again) if only they start listing other non-crap items. I'd give this six stars if I could. My faith in Bitcoin just got upped a notch or three.

PS: The album is great. If you have a few Bitcoins lying around, try it!

Cool!  You made the website I wanted to make, but didn't have time for...!  Smiley

20% seems like an awful lot.  What sites are you comparing to when you say it is a competitive rate?

I do think 20% is fair.  Considering the amount of development and hosting required it makes sense.  I do not know of any type of site that charges less, and as others have pointed out almost everyone charges more.

But right now you aren't really able to make that kind of offering and you need people to help you. That makes me think free or cheap to start is the way to go. Maybe leave the fee, but give rewards to the providers of the most downloaded material?

To this I can only say, if you think you have something that will sell, especially something that is exclusively sold for Bitcoin(therefore giving folks a reason to buy Bitcoin and use coinDL), shoot me an email at [email protected]

What do you think about using your software under different branding to sell porn? it seems to be a growing thing the last week or so. reddit.com/r/girlsgonebitcoin if you didn't know.

I'm aware of that and if someone has strong experience in that industry, I would be open to discussing it. It's just not the focus for this site at this time.

CDbaby, Orchard and iTunes all charge 25%+ and have setup or annual fees in addition. Don't forget that if the site gets to significant volume licensing to Thompson will be required for MP3 sales. For that reason, I would recommend sellers upload music in Ogg Vorbis and we'll make it easy for users to purchase in the format they prefer.

20% seems totally fine for a site that has -tons- of content. It's really nice to be able to think of something and go get it for coin or to browse through a bunch of neat stuff you haven't seen.

But right now you aren't really able to make that kind of offering and you need people to help you. That makes me think free or cheap to start is the way to go. Maybe leave the fee, but give rewards to the providers of the most downloaded material?

But otoh, there isn't really any competition to speak of so you can price pretty... aggressively.

But on the third hand, you invite competition pretty quickly if you charge too much.

I believe iTunes charges 30%, but that's iTunes.
Well, I can't argue with that...

I suspect the high fees are because of the usually low prices in the range of a few dollars.

I'm wondering why someone doesn't start a service where they offer a download service with two rules:
- the site wont check what the file is
- the site doesn't allow file names, every file gets an unique ID and that's it

Then you'd need to have another site owned by someone else, maybe hidden via TOR with a forum where each ID is matched with a description.

I wonder if such a site could keep plausible deniability of knowing what is hosted on their servers to allow anything to be sold without being attacked by the government?

Maybe all files are encrypted and someone else sells the keys?

Like you (person who has some reputation) says "file 00456 on bitcoindownloads.com" is the next comic in this series. Send X to address Y for the key".

The site with the file has no way to check without buying all the keys which seems too much to ask and the seller is not selling any content. Seems too easy.

Sorry for the slight diversion OP. Good luck with the site.

!
Yes! Man how didn't I make that mental leap... Only allow encrypted files! Cheesy

(and there seems to be a _lot_ of that in the Bitcoin world)

Yes, the Achilles heel of many excellent programmers is the inability to put themselves in the shoes of the first time user of the tools they create and they tend to create a bit of a steep learning curve when they design software.
