They need to keep up with the fast and regular updates that the team behind Ethereum is doing. Other projects are obviously lagging far behind and without a very active team as Ethereum's.

Waves was popular in its early days but they didnt grow with time. With POS update, we may see some movement with ETH and teams may start using ETH again.
But behind that reason is another large and more interesting story. Yes, there is no real competitor of Ethereum right now. But how about before today? How about the time when there were a lot of Ethereum competitors? Are we not going to consider the feat of Ethereum by being the lone survivor after all other projects tried to compete and replace it but failed? Waves was a strong contender before but it was not the choice of most projects. ETC became another platform, so was NEM, NEO, Stratis, Komodo, etc but all of them did not make it to the top. Only Ethereum did.

There are so many restrictions in these days and it is big challenge they could resolve the regulatory issue to make their platform ready for mass adoption.
Regulatory issues are one of the major drawbacks to acquiring the mass adoption otherwise we might see the prices of altcoins will skyrocket. Even I have not gone through Whitepaper completely, but it is a really good idea to replace them into Ethereum, but for that, we need to have restrictions.
