TIP-019 - $500,000 investment from treasury into NEAR Protocol ($NEAR)

We believe additional investments in established projects at current market conditions will help to further grow our treasury. Diversity minimises the risk and makes growth possible.

NEAR Protocol is a layer-one blockchain that was designed as a community-run cloud computing platform and that eliminates some of the limitations that have been bogging competing blockchains, such as low transaction speeds, low throughput and poor interoperability. This provides the ideal environment for DApps and creates a developer and user-friendly platform. For instance, NEAR uses human-readable account names, unlike the cryptographic wallet addresses common to Ethereum. NEAR also introduces unique solutions to scaling problems and has its own consensus mechanism called “Doomslug.”

NEAR uses its Nightshade technology to improve transaction throughput massively. Nightshade is a variation of sharding, in which individual sets of validators process transactions in parallel across multiple sharded chains, improving the overall capacity of the blockchain. In contrast to “regular” sharding, shards in Nightshade produce a fraction of the next block, called “chunks.” In doing so, NEAR Protocol is able to achieve up to 100,000 transactions per second and achieve near-instant transaction finality thanks to a one-second block cadence while simultaneously keeping transaction fees at virtually zero.

NEAR Protocol also improves upon the convoluted onboarding process of other blockchains by having human-readable addresses and building decentralized applications with similar registration flow to what users have already experienced. Moreover, it provides developers with modular components, helping them start projects like token contracts or NFTs more quickly.

Over the last few months we’ve been increasing our holdings of the FTM token. These tokens are used for a variety of purposes - mainly to stake with our validators and provide a revenue stream to the project. Given the current market dip (FTM is ~$1 per token at the time of writing), we see an opportunity to acquire more tokens.

With a yes vote, we will use $500,000 from the treasury to purchase FTM tokens and self-delegate them to our validators in a 50/50 split.

We believe additional investments in established projects at current market conditions will help to further grow our treasury. Diversity minimises the risk and makes a continuous growth possible.

When XLM was released in July 2014, one of its goals was boosting financial inclusion by reaching the world’s unbanked — but soon afterwards, its priorities shifted to helping financial firms connect with one another through blockchain technology.

The network’s native token, lumens, serves as a bridge that makes it less expensive to trade assets across borders. All of this aims to challenge existing payment providers, who often charge high fees for a similar service.

If all of this sounds familiar, it is worth nothing that Stellar was originally based on the Ripple Labs protocol. The blockchain was created as a result of hard fork, and the code was subsequently rewritten.

Stellar is unique because every transaction costs just 0.00001 XLM. Given how one unit of this cryptocurrency only costs a few cents at the time of writing, this helps ensure that users keep more of their money.

Few blockchain projects have managed to secure partnerships with big-brand technology companies and fintech firms. A few years ago, Stellar and IBM teamed up to launch World Wire, a project that allowed large financial institutions to submit transactions to the Stellar network and transact using bridge assets such as stablecoins.

Due to our ongoing discussions regarding future cooperations with Catheon Gaming, we propose to invest at an early stage in the project Angrymals.

Angrymals is a free-to-play PvP tactical video game based on one solid concept: throw junk and wreck things! Inspired by Angry Birds and Worms, the player will control three customized Angrymals bunkered down in a player-designed fortress, armed with a huge assortment of absurd weapons and powers to lay waste on the opponent's defenses.
Angrymals has been in development since 2015. It is being developed by Sionera Entertainment, a boutique Italian game studio, which was acquired by Catheon Gaming, a leading blockchain game publisher in January 2022. Catheon Gaming is among other things, such as the company behind SolChicks. The team's focus now is to convert the existing Angrymals game into a blockchain, play-to-earn version. Hectorians, We were recently made aware that Ola Finance, our Hector Bank partner, have discovered an exploit in their technologies.

This issue is isolated to Fuse Network and does not affect Hector Bank.

As a precaution all borrowing in Hector Bank has been paused whilst contracts are reviewed to make sure they’re safe.
