Grantcoin Foundation Approved as 501(c)(3) Tax-Exempt Charity; Grantcoin Starter Kit and Matching Grant Programs Launched

Posted on December 15, 2015 by The Grantcoin Foundation
http://www.grantcoin.org/2015/12/15/grantcoin-foundation-approved-as-501c3-tax-exempt-charity-programs-launched/

In a historic development, Grantcoin has become the first cryptocurrency to be managed and distributed by an IRS-approved tax-exempt public charity. The Grantcoin Foundation, a nonprofit organization incorporated in Delaware, has been approved by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service for 501(c)(3) status, which allows Grantcoin supporters in the United States to receive a full tax deduction for their charitable contributions to Grantcoin’s governing body. 501(c)(3) organizations are legally required to have a charitable mission and adhere to high standards of ethics and transparency.

“The whole Grantcoin team is incredibly proud to have achieved this milestone,” said Eric Stetson, founder and Executive Director of the Grantcoin Foundation. “As the first philanthropy-backed digital currency with an affirmative IRS determination of tax-exempt status, Grantcoin is breaking new ground. We are the charitable alternative to Bitcoin.”

In conjunction with this announcement, the Grantcoin Foundation is launching two new programs:

  • GrantDrives: Grantcoin-branded bamboo flash drives containing a Grantcoin starter kit for donors. The starter kit comes with wallet software pre-loaded with Grantcoin and detailed instructions for how to use it.
  • Cascading Philanthropy program: Matching grants for donors, to the charity of your choice. The Grantcoin Foundation will give the equivalent monetary value of your tax-deductible donation in the form of Grantcoin, plus free promotion for your favorite charity or nonprofit to our 4,000+ Twitter followers. In January we plan to launch a website called GrantMarket, where people can easily send Grantcoin microdonations to featured charities, artists, and other worthy recipients — and your charity will be profiled there too!

Over 80% of the total supply of Grantcoin is reserved for charitable grants to help create a more humane and sustainable world. Grantcoin will be distributed in each nation and community proportionally to its population, to help shift the economy towards a more fair distribution of wealth as the currency gains users and value.

“We’re building an alternative currency system inspired by people’s belief in social justice and the public good, and backed by their philanthropic support,” said the founder of Grantcoin. “Imagine a world where humanity’s most worthy values and actions are built in to the way money works — that’s the world Grantcoin is creating. All we need is people to join this movement for an equitable and sustainable global economy,” said Stetson. “Together we can make it happen.”

Grantcoin was launched to the public on May 1, 2015 and is led by a team of socially conscious entrepreneurs and activists in the United States. The Grantcoin Foundation plans to establish affiliates in communities around the world, which will assist in the distribution and widespread adoption of Grantcoin. Thank you Suprnova for all your cooperation to get things working again on your pool.

Attention Grantcoin miners: Suprnova is the ONLY pool we know of that has updated to the new wallet and is mining on the correct fork.

Some people are still mining on MaxMiners, but as we have mentioned before, that pool has not updated -- they are on the wrong fork of the blockchain! All blocks being found by MaxMiners are invalid. If you are mining on MaxMiners, the blocks you find are worthless and you are just wasting your electricity. Please switch to Suprnova or solo mine if you prefer.

If MaxMiners ever updates their Grantcoin pool, we will let you know.

Here is the explanation of why we're currently stuck at block 250,001. There was an incompatibility between the updated legacy code and the new wallets, and the only mining pool that updated to v0.7.0 (Suprnova) was using the legacy code. As soon as we discovered the incompatibility, our team asked Suprnova to turn off their pool, since the blocks being mined after 250,001 will not be part of the blockchain after we get things started up again.

Last night, we released a patch to fix the problem in the legacy code, and informed Suprnova. They haven't yet restarted the pool though.

Anyone who wants to try to solo mine, can do so by compiling grantcoind from the latest version of the legacy code here: https://github.com/grantcoin/grantcoin-legacy. If you try this, please do a fresh blockchain download before you start to mine.

We also hope that Suprnova will start up again soon with the fix, and we'll inform you in this thread when that happens, so that people can mine again in the pool.

Our team is also testing a bug fix for the updated official code which had caused issues for Suprnova (which is why they were using the legacy version), and if all goes well, we'll release that tonight or tomorrow.

The other two pools (MaxMiners and AltMiners) have never responded to any messages from the Grantcoin Foundation about this fork, over the past couple of weeks, and as far as we're concerned these Grantcoin pools should be considered defunct and should not be used by anyone mining Grantcoin (unless we hear back from them, and if we do, we'll let the community know).

Attention Grantcoin Users: Mandatory Wallet Update by Today, December 3

Posted on December 3, 2015 by The Grantcoin Foundation
http://www.grantcoin.org/2015/12/03/attention-grantcoin-users-mandatory-wallet-update/

The Grantcoin software development team has tested and released a new version of wallets, v0.7.0, for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. All Grantcoin users are urged to download the new wallet software as soon as possible.

Because of planned changes to the Grantcoin block reward system — specifically, turning off the Proof-of-Stake minting which was scheduled to begin — the blockchain will fork at block 250,000. This is expected to happen today, December 3. After today, people who haven’t updated their wallet may be connected to the wrong blockchain if they use the old wallet. If you try to send a transaction with the old wallet, you may lose your coins.

Updating to Grantcoin v0.7.0 is easy. Just download the appropriate wallet for the operating system you are using and run it. If you already had Grantcoin on the same computer or device, the new wallet might take some time to re-index the blockchain the first time you use it.

Users of the Grantcoin Twitter wallet do not need to do anything to continue using it the same as before — the Grantcoin Foundation has updated that wallet on our server. People who have Grantcoin in “cold storage” or a paper wallet do not need to do anything with their wallet.dat file or private key. If you ever decide to import your coins into an active, “hot” wallet on a computer or device, just make sure that you’re running the new version of the wallet software.

Wallet download links are below:

Grantcoin v0.7.0 includes several new features which are an improvement over the old wallet, such as:

  • Coin control (for advanced users)
  • Support for IPv6
  • Multisig capability
  • Faster syncing and blockchain download speed

More information about Grantcoin wallets is also available on this page.

Grantcoin code is available on GitHub, for advanced users who wish to compile and run a grantcoind headless client. You have two options, both of which are v0.7.0 and fully compatible with each other:

Grantcoin miners are asked to use the Suprnova mining pool or solo-mine Grantcoin starting today. Suprnova has confirmed that they updated to the new version of Grantcoin. Other mining pools have not yet confirmed this, so the Grantcoin Foundation cannot recommend using them until they do.

If you have any questions or issues with the new wallets or code, please contact the Grantcoin Foundation and our developers will reply. Bug reports and suggestions for improvement are always appreciated!

Hello Grantcoin users,

Just a reminder that Grantcoin will have a hardfork at block 250,000, which will be reached in about 1 week (expected December 3). Mining pools and exchanges have been contacted so that the fork should go smoothly.

New code has been released at the Grantcoin official code repository: https://github.com/grantcoin/grantcoin. Anyone who uses grantcoind, please compile and start using the new version 0.7.0 as soon as possible.

QT wallets have been built and will be released during the next few days. We apologize for the delay, but our development team is still in the process of finalizing them for public distribution.

Grantcoin Foundation Partners with 7 Elements for Development Services; Mandatory Wallet Update by End of November

Posted on November 5, 2015 by The Grantcoin Foundation
http://www.grantcoin.org/2015/11/05/partners-with-7-elements-for-development-services-mandatory-wallet-update/

The Grantcoin Foundation and 7 Elements LLC are pleased to announce an ongoing partnership for development and maintenance of Grantcoin code and wallet software.

7 Elements is led by Troy Benjegerdes, a developer with experience in the cryptocurrency field, who has served as an Advisor to the Grantcoin Foundation ever since Grantcoin launched in May. Troy has a career background in software engineering, especially servers and back-end development, and has worked for the Cray supercomputer company.

7 Elements is donating professional services to the Grantcoin Foundation because Grantcoin is the only cryptocurrency that is managed by a nonprofit organization with a mission for social good, which is pursuing recognition as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

“I am happy to work with the Grantcoin Foundation to make Grantcoin as strong technologically as it is in its economic philosophy and values,” said Troy Benjegerdes. “When you use Grantcoin, you are voting with your wallet for an inclusive, direct-democratic financial system that decides how wealth should be distributed based on charitable guidelines, not the profit interest of a small group of financial insiders. This is a cryptocurrency worth supporting.”

In the next two weeks, the Grantcoin Foundation will be releasing new code and wallets for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. This will be a mandatory update for all users — there will be a hardfork at block 250,000 in the Grantcoin blockchain.

Reasons for the update include:

  • Integrate all features which were added to Bitcoin core versions 0.7 and 0.8, some of which were not included in the first version of Grantcoin. These features includes coin control and support for IPv6.
  • Significantly improve blockchain download speed. This is especially noticeable in the Android client.
  • Indefinitely delay the start of Proof of Stake. The Grantcoin Foundation has decided to consider alternative distribution models for future block rewards which are more in line with the economic justice principles of our organization. While studying and deciding on a system, Grantcoin’s network will continue to be powered by Proof of Work mining. 7 Elements will lead the development of a permanent solution to be released in 2016.

The mobile wallet being developed by 7 Elements offers users full control of sensitive information such as private keys and transaction history data, without any third-party hosting that can be compromised by hackers or corporate buyouts.

Troy Benjegerdes is working closely with Eric Stetson, who developed the first version of Grantcoin, on internal alpha testing for the hardfork to occur at the end of November, to ensure that there will be a smooth, bug-free transition for Grantcoin users, mining pools, and exchanges.

Please watch for another announcement by the middle of this month with new wallet downloads and instructions for the mandatory update.

Grantcoin Foundation Applies for 501(c)(3) Tax-Exempt Status

Posted on October 27, 2015 by The Grantcoin Foundation
http://www.grantcoin.org/2015/10/27/grantcoin-foundation-applies-for-501c3-tax-exempt-status/

The Grantcoin Foundation is pleased to announce that we have applied for 501(c)(3) status as a tax-exempt charitable and educational nonprofit organization in the United States. Based on legal advice we have received, we are confident that the Foundation meets all the criteria for approval.

If the Grantcoin Foundation is approved by the IRS, Grantcoin will become the first cryptocurrency to be managed and distributed by a 501(c)(3) organization.

The Grantcoin Foundation made the decision to pursue tax-exempt status because the mission of our organization and the Grantcoin currency itself is philanthropic in nature. Grantcoin is an alternative currency distributed into circulation primarily as charitable grants. The Grantcoin Foundation also has an educational mission, to inform the public about the history of money, the negative consequences of the current for-profit monetary system, and the benefits of a non-profit, non-governmental alternative.

To increase our credibility as a grantmaking charity and strengthen the case for 501(c)(3) approval, we have reallocated the amount of Grantcoin held by the Foundation in different categories of the Grantcoin Reserve. Under our revised plan, 80% will be given away as grants to worthy people and organizations, and only 20% will be used for administrative purposes and incentives for growth and adoption.

“Grantcoin is one of only a handful of cryptocurrencies that have been created to advance a cause for social good,” said Eric Stetson, founder and Executive Director of the Grantcoin Foundation. “It is appropriate that such a project be managed by a legitimate tax-exempt nonprofit organization which can be backed financially by donors and benefactors. We believe the world is ready for a philanthropy-based currency, and Grantcoin looks forward to leading the way.”

In the next few weeks, we will roll out a program to encourage charitable donations to the Grantcoin Foundation, as well as other important announcements about new developments coming soon.

Every time my computer close for updates when i go to reopen it there a file missing is there something we can do to fix this issue with the wallet..

Can you please describe the issue in more detail? What file is missing? What operating system is your computer using?

This is the first time we've heard of this issue, so we need all the info we can get to look into it and try to find the cause. Thanks!

is it still good to buy in now?
sold mine n forgot to buy it back

Now is probably a good time. Someone just dumped a bunch.
thanks, bought a few from your suggestion, hope it could still be higher at price

The block reward just halved. I think there will be a slight dip in the price as there will probably be miners dumping their coins. Once that is over I think the price will recover and possibly be slightly higher as the mining cost will be higher. Then with the pending news from the foundation there could be another bump in price which hopefully holds steady.

That is just me speculating. I'm no financial advisor Smiley

YMMV
yes i think so too, when the block reward halved, currently, buying up some more from the dump
