5,000 - 10,000 are figures that sounded reasonable. As far as I know, a final decision has not been reached.

Community involvement is the key.
Right off the bat, I can tell you this coin needs a new logo/icon. Something like the Steam-icon or the preferences in iOS or something looking better than the old one. Machinecoin isn't a bad name, but I'd shorten it to "Machine" or "Machinery" only.
5 - 10K for a MN is too little, it will end up like ARC or one of the small MN-coins that constantly lose in value and fail to create any hype. Given the number of MAC in existence, you'd want to go for 50K/MN at the low end, that would be $500 right now. If you limit the possible number of MN's to 400 (50K) or 200 (100K), you will see an ultra-brutal run on the coin. Personally, I would create separate tiers - staking gives you a certain percentage of rewards, but running a MN much more.
And then I'd say it needs a better story - the steampunk image is nice, but what features does/will it offer? Private sends and segwit aren't anything new.
Mobile App to do instant tips on performances?
Built-in exchange?
Decentralized mining pool on MAC as a smart contract for mining other coins?
something better?
Maybe you are right about the logo, we don't really have one other than our coin design. I made this one a while back because I thought it would be more recognizable and inline with other coins:
But it never caught on.
Hmmm... Can't post an image. You can see it here -
https://image.ibb.co/gDpZM5/MAC.pngPersonally, I like "Machinecoin". I don't think a coin named "Machine" or "Machinery" sounds good at all. You can simply call it "MAC" if you wish, thats really short.
I suggested 50k for a masternode, I like that number. This has been discussed a few times. 50k may serve as a barrier for people new to Machinecoin though. Especially if/when the price does skyrocket. If you have 50k MACs, I guess you could run 5-10 Masternodes. Never thought about capping the total number... Don't believe that ever came up.
Although we still want to be Steampunk's official currency, the Steampunk image is being archived. To be honest (My opinion, not the official opinion of Machinecoin), I never felt much love from the steampunk community. We have lacked community and it would have been nice if their community embraced us. I have reached out to quite a few steampunk establishments and I always get a rude response or no response at all. I especially liked this one, "Why is this being discussed on ...? Is there a new form of bitcoin based on analytical engines?"
So the official opinion of Machinecoin is that we don't need to limit ourselves to one group of people, Machines are everywhere and in everything.
All these features you suggest - decentralized exchange, smart contracts, decentralized mining pools - are all features of a smart contract platform, which we are not. We have our own unique algorithm called TimeTravel that was developed by Machinecoin. Even though Segwit and private payments are nothing new, we are enabling them because they are useful features. We are a versatile coin that can be utilized by anyone that wants to transfer value from person A to person B which can compete with any coin.
In the future, we are considering developing our own unique smart contract platform.
