Do I have to sync the wallet to get an address? It's 246 weeks behind in about 30 minutes.
Generally speaking, the Namecoin client creates 100 addresses as soon as it creates a new wallet.dat file. This happens even before it starts synchronizing.However, there may be unwanted effects if you use an outdated software version, or if you haven't synched up to the hard-fork block some three years ago. Therefore I recommend the following:
(1) Use 0.3.80 (with or without GUI) or Namecoin Core (much faster, commandline only, GUI available but still in beta).
(2) Wait at least for hard-fork block 150000 (150 weeks ago).
Also keep in mind that you can safely spend NMCs not before synchronized completely.
If you want to speed up the sync process consider using the start parameters printtoconsole and dbcache.

How far along is development on this coin?
Since Obama signed over the internet to the UN yesterday, I see a need for decentralizing DNS more than ever before.

Currently the most successful implementation of NMC is Zeronet.io, mostly used for torrents.

Look either the names etc are way too cheap or there is some other serious problem with the economic model of namecoin.All you have to do is look at overall trend since the beginning.A coin that loses volume/price action etc is going nowhere except the gutter.This stuff will never become mainstream unless businesses or general population have a use for it because idealism wont save jack shit at the end of the day without the funding.At the end of the day money talks so unless there are institutions or projects that are dependent on namecoin as a utility for whatever stuff it can provide other than what it has been doing it is going down all the way.There are projects out there geared towards mainstream commercial use with stuff like data in the blockchain or identity protection for banking or whatever with only a fraction of the time and effort that went into namecoin raising millions and multiples the price.

If namecoin had some sort of way to send news content or product advertising viral it would be useful.Is there anything out there that does this?
In a way we do this so you can support namecoin by blogging about it :-)

Is the max transaction value size still 520bytes? Or was that every changed? Also, is the OP_RETURN size 80 bytes like for Bitcoin?
The maximum value length is in theory 1024 bytes (or 1023, not sure), as it always was - but yes, in practice 520 bytes is the longest you can do, otherwise you are not able to renew the name. (And the client will not easily allow you to register names with longer values, even if possible in theory).
As for the OP_RETURN size, I'm not 100% sure right now what the actual value is - you can check the code, but I can confirm that it should be the same as what upstream Bitcoin currently has (i. e., I did not change that).
I was looking into something other than a dns entry.
I have been working on this concept and was thinking that instead of a Bitcoin OP_RETURN, this might be best route might be using Namecoin's ledger as it is about as secure as Bitcoin but is built more for such concepts:

If you are fine with registering a name and then having to let it expire, you can store up to 1023 bytes in it - but for your usecase, it is probably also enough to have much less data, as you only need enough information to find your stuff in a DHT. With Namecoin, you could actually store the DHT key (e. g., Torrent file) in a d/ name for your website, and even update it when your data changes. Then you can directly use the Namecoin name as the address for your site.
That makes a lot of sense for the DHT. I initially figured I could grab some IPs after a search of other people using the plugin but that it would likely change. A separate d/ name with the IPs would work quite well. Thanks.
Letting pages expire is probably best anyway so most data is relatively new.

Could namecoin just hold an ICO and do a coin swap etc in order to raise funds or does this go against the grain?I don't think anyone would question the integrity of the developers behind namecoin if they were to do some crowdfunding etc due to their good standing and experience.

I think that we should head towards making an official release relatively soon, given that we haven't in quite some time. Bitcoin Core 0.13 is out, and I've just tagged a 0.13 Namecoin Core release candidate based on that release:

It includes the code to temporarily disable the low-S-signature check, so that miners/clients with this version are able to fully relay and mine transactions created by the legacy 0.3.80 client. This will go away with the next version, but is a good compromise to keep supporting the client just a little longer before the last users can finally migrate.
The release candidate does not yet include a UI for managing names, but once the pull request is fully completed and merged, we can release a follow-up 0.13.1 or so.
All feedback is very welcome - testing, building binaries, comments on what we still need for the final release, and so on!
