I see this error reported in this board over at litecoin only and it was in the early days, no answer was ever provided that I can find.

It's problem with dynamic ports on Windows 8 : support.microsoft.com/kb/929851

For solo mining set rpcport=8081 in config file, or if you don't mining solo set #server=1

This solution fixed it straight away. I forgot I had a crash in November. I had no ipv6.

1) On windows 7 the smartcoin icon in the quick launch is empty. There is just a blank space, you may have to put an icon there.

If you are mining on a pool and not solo, set server=0
