Please explain to a newb,is this vtorrent thing where someone can upload some material and when someone is downloading your material you"ll get vtorrent tokens? Dont laugh at me,this is how I understood this thing works.

Yes. Essentially that is the idea, plus an ecosystem where you can chat, access magnet links, trade and the like as well.

You don't really have to upload new files or anything, it could be an existing file which you happen to host.

Cypher punks mailing list is talking about distributed Bittorrent.... In the face of thepiratebay censorship a model like vtorrent with the added benefit of incentive based seeding is starting to have a demand

Quote
Don't know if that one, or any of dozens the "the pirate bay" domains,
other than .org / .se / .onion are operated by "the pirate bay". Maybe
yes, maybe no. If no, maybe they a true mirror via api, or a scrape, or an
import of some scrape / dump appended with subsequent submissions...
but still not technically "the pirate bay".
And a number of them have interface and or dataset differences, or
are broken.
Though the hydra meme and model of random popups is certainly
fine for those that like playing whack a mole, it's really legacy.

Torrenting data itself, once you have the infohash and queried DHT / PEX
for peers, and joined into swarm, is reasonably distributed among
contributing peers. (Availability there is human, not algorithmic decision,
which other networks try to solve.)

But what tools are there to publish the torrent name and infohash into a
fully distributed index, and to search the names and retrieve infohash from it?
And to learn and maintain an in flux list of random active nodes you need
to contact to bootstrap your client's DHT?

That's not TPB central server index and search model.
And decentral bootstrap isn't in clients like vuze or transmission.

It's more like a blockchain (or just a log) index, over darknet.

what is the key advantage of this type of thing runing on the [Suspicious link removed]pared to uTorrent and stuff like that?

here you go

...

The riot chat feature looks cool enough- but how exactly is the torrent feature in VTR supposed to work?

Think uTorrent meets Monero, they get married and end up living together. That get's you on to the first page.

Then add Anon Social Network (Riot)
Then add basic chat (one off deals and transactions)
Then add MultiSig (Monero can't do that yet)
Then add 2FA to protect your wallet if you leave it open all the time
Then add Tor and I2P support
Then add classifieds market
Then add mobile support

That gets you to the same page as our expectations for the project over 2017.

Which of those points have been confirmed by the dev? I know he has talked about storing magnet links in the blockchain but nothing about a classified market yet? Would love to be wrong though. Also do you know if he has talked about making a lite client available in the future? I think that is important for mass adoption.

A lite client was a feature raised by the dev from very early on. It'll be on his post history somewhere.

Classifieds / market are a feature request I'd like to see implemented. If it doesn't get done in 2017 or early 2018, we can think about merging the Umbra market into a fork. Because a fork with a market is possible, someone will do it, so it might as well go on to the road map, provided everyone agrees it's a good feature to add.

edit

got me wondering if I had imagined it:

Hi to all VTR supporters, its my first post althought i support already for a year.
Is a smartphone app already discussed?
And with staking POS do i need to be connected all the time? And my staking is not everytime all i Have in wallet.
Where can i find how it works?
I re-read almost all the posts back, but its not all clear.

Thanks in advance.

A smartphone app hasn't really been discussed but has been shown by dev via a YouTube video; its likely given the vision of the project (to be an all inclusive A>Z app that features crypto) that we'll see this at some point though.

If you're PoS staking then yes, you do need to be connected 24/7. Or just when your computer is on.

Generally speaking PoS works upon the age of your coins, so if your coins have been in your wallet for ~7 days (can't remember exact figure) then you would achieve maximum stake. This varies depending on the cryptocurrency you're using.

These aspects of this cryptocurrency are very general to cryptocurrency in general so are featured in several other projects which is why they've never really been discussed at length here; for the most part its assumed that people have some experience of PoS given crypto projects in general.

How did you work that out?

Ok, you don't have to tell your calculation method as that's probably your own secret sauce.

I get ~ March 16 @ 5am
