Just sold my Ants for about 190€/piece. Anyone have any ideas when these will become useless (power costs more than it makes)?

New price for AntMiner S1: 0.414 btc each one, shipping cost included.

No coupons (+~10%) anymore and rising difficulty (+~13%) today and the price decreased only about 0.005 (-~1%).

Do I have made something wrong? I hoped bitmain would have droped the price much more, but they only adjusted it a little bit.

Yes you didn't factor in the price appreciation. Add that and your formula should equalise.

The btc prive increased about 25%, so the S1 should be 25% cheaper which is not the case.
The coupons are removed, the gave a discount of about 10%, so the bitmain price is in real 10% higher now.

At least the S1 price should drop minimum about 25%-30%.

After that there will be a 13% rise in difficulty, making the machines mine btc 13% less.

I can follow you why the bitmain price seems correct to you...

When we consider about the intrinsic value of the device, the price should lower. But here in the btc world the miner price will go up or down with respect to the underlying, btc.
BTC +47% (440 -> 650), Difficulty increase 18%, i.e., roughly 29% increase in Antminer price will be equal to No increase/decrease in price.

*The above are rough estimations. I will not say the above is 100% correct. Period of consideration: ROI, BTC price considered constant at 650.

i think those x's indicate chips overheating and that will cause a slowdown in hashrate .. your temps are not bad but i think u have some chips overheating. i seen same thing on some mine and that is what helped them stop getting x's .. sometimes x's are ok but when accompanied with slowdown of hashrate then i think chips are overheating.

Nah, those x's aren't overheating - he's only running at 43-45 - that's well cool. More likely to be insufficient power/crap PSU.

I'd agree, my very first ant came with a broken fan, so replaced it with 2 Arctic F12's (push/pull) which still can't match the performance of the original, as a result it has run over 50c constantly for nearly 5 months and never missed a beat.

Anyone else having trouble with recent S1 units? I have 1 out of 3 units giving me problems and bitmaintech is making me go through hoops to get anything resolved!!!

Your first pool is dead. To get rid of X-try to reboot by going into system and reboot without shutting the power off. it helps on mine.
Your hashing speed is ~ correct with 5/64 asics not functioning (you are ~7% off in speed as expected). 7% off is still better than to send the miner back.
Good luck.

First pool is dead because that is how it work on betarigs to rent your rig Wink

I agree that if I have to pay to ship it back and be down for a week with no rig it doesn't make sense but you pay for 180 ghs they should give you 180ghs. If they need to send a replacement board thats on them not my problem. It is brand new!!

I did try the reboot with no power off, sometimes it give me more X's sometimes less. somtimes a whole board doesn't come online. There is no question this unit is defective! There just needs to be a solution from bitmain on what to do about it.

you might consider adding some additional cooling ?? try adding heatsinks to the chips and/or adding an additional fan. you should be able to drop the temps to about 39 and 40 if you do that and maybe those chips will stop overheating .

Need better PSU?

Make sure that all the screws holding the boards to the heatsinks are fully screwed in (just finger tight).  I had quite a few that could use another turn or half a turn.  Replace your PSU with one proven to work correctly with the Ants.  If the x's persist, try to reset from the GUI.  If that doesn't work, try different clock speeds (both lower and higher), each Ant has its own 'personality'.... I don't think that you are overheating, but local over temp because of poor heat conduction to some ASICS could be your enemy.

Cheers

thats not bad temps but that doesnt mean individual chips are not overheating. i have eight of these S-1's and i got one that had the same symptoms as yours. it had some leaking thermal paste .. it cannot be overclocked but when i put heatsinks on it cleared those symptoms. i assuming that the thermal paste on those particular chips was inadequate and therefore were running hotter than the others.

Recieved another group of S1's.  Out of the five, one will not mine worth a crap.  This miner will start out at around 140GH/s and drop down from there until it goes on the way to no hashing and then it will restart and try again.

So what do I do now with this S1 that does not work?

I had one like this, it was starting, going to ~150, then dropping to nothing, flashing bright green, then restarting.
On this particular miner on the top board (above the sink) one large black chip had a red mark on it (I checked all others-they had either nothing or green or black mark). I assume that it is somewhat defective. That large black chip was severely overheating (results I got with temperature sensor). I was able to fix this miner to a reasonable hashing at ~180gh at standard 350 mhz, but it absolutely requires an additional fan airflow toward the top of the miner and this miner cannot overclock at all. Perhaps, your situation is different, but give it a shot with an extra fan outside. Check if that chip is marked.
I am posting two photos-top is of somewhat defective miner (see mark on a chip), bottom-normal miner (see small mark in green/black)

hmmm. maybe put an aluminum heatsink on that chip and see how that affects these ..

How many of you guys have found a block with your Ants?

I've found two blocks using only two Antminers since February.

If I had balls I'd be 46 BTC richer now, solo mining.

If you found 2 blocks then you would be 50 BTC richer. What are you saying?

he mined 4 coins in pools

so 50 - 4 = 46

but self mining would use different   connections to do the mining and there is the possibility  he would have not mined the 2 blocks.

I did a lot of math on this everyone that mines in house should have at least 5% of his hash mining solo.

That said I have yet to set my solo mining up  and I am wrong to not do it.

I have some rockminers coming I plan to teach myself to solo mine and run 1 rock miner at solo mining 24/7/365.

as a bit of news ASICMINER may put out an s-1 killer in the x-box   a 400gh 450watt 400usd unit.

well, they just coming soon...no posted prices as far as I can see. Bitmain strength is in fast distribution and high reliability and that takes time to establish, but I am totally open to try- make use of my power supplies.

here is a link

we are  still short info but at 400 usd 400 gh and 400 watts  that would be the end of the s-1.    best case

I am thinking it may be 500usd   350gh and 450 watts  my guess

thanks, i've seen the video, but $500 for 350 gh will not "kill" anything.

no but   400 usd 400 gh 400 watts  will kill off the ant miner s-1.

but who knows what will happen 2 weeks in crypto coin time is forever.
