Not sure if posted yet, but this may help some of the fellow miners out there that don't like the paperclip trick.

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/5141/psu-218/FrozenCPU_24-pin_Power_Supply_Jump_Start_Connector.html

Might be US only- not sure.

I am waiting for my 30 units still. Held up in Hong Kong the last two days Sad shipped via dhl

Knoxx/BlitzStix

worth ordering a jumper for those who might feel timid about it.
Side note-my EVGA1300 (from rakuten) came with a motherboard dummy WITH a jumper inserted. I guess they are aware who there customers are  Smiley

Ok, the first image is the unit I thought had high HW issues, and the second image is the unit with low HW.

Restore the stock frequency on the first one. You can even overclock it, these HW rates are nothing to worry about. Anything below 1% of DiffA is fine, and you're nowhere near that.

Edit: set up a real backup pool, you don't want downtime if btcguild goes down.

most likely you do not have an hw issue.

for a back up pool   join bitminter  very honest operator  i used him since the summer of 2012.

list him third on your list.

Can someone let me know what the Antminer S3 status showing -o-o-o-o -o-o-o-o -o-o-o-o -ooo-o-o  means?  Only one chain is showing this.  The other is oooooooo oooooooo .  Reason I ask is my Hash rate is 345 average.  Should be higher.

that is a bad chain.

fixes may be:
 1) lower freq setting 212.5 has helped
2) reboot via gui  may help
3) make sure you have a good psu

If the above are not working, go back to this thread and read last two days posts.
Your problem will get solved.

My Guess is power supply.  It's a cheap 520 watt from Best Buy.  Will try a Corsair 750w later today.

How do I lower frequency?  Currently at 218.75.

Highly recommending to immediately replace your power supply with a new good quality one like you said.
I will recommend you to buy an 800Watts power supply unit for you instead of the 750Watts PSU. Keep and eye on the single +12V rail.
Why you want to lower your mining power? Some do for some particular reason like placing in office and so.
Underclocking is simple, uncomment lower frequency lines(3) to select lower frequency.

Ok got the new power supply.  Corsair 750M.  Still getting the same -o-o-o-o -o-o-o-o -o-o-o-o -ooo-o-o for Chain 2.  Any other tips?  Can the Antminer be a bad one?

did you replace stock thermal paste ??

So! All units are hashing over 440gh (Two over 490), but only when using a cronjob to restart the cgminer service every 1/2 hour - 1hr depending on the miner.
Regardless of how long I leave any of these guys up to "stabilize", they always fall to 390-398 after 48 hours.

There's only one thing. I am noticing a rather high number of duplicate shares poolside since starting this restart routine. (surprise)
Is there a cgminer flag among the bitmain options to clear the asic of all work upon a cgminer restart? I know the A1 miners have a similar command with '--hwreset'

Restarting every 30 minutes is a bad practice.
Try replacing thermal paste grease and I think the issue will be solved.

I'm pretty aware how just how shitty it is, but unfortunately after re-pasting two units I saw a decrease in running temperatures but was still experiencing a steep drop off in hash after about 25-35 minutes. One of the units will spike back up to about 470 but never enough to average out to 440 without cgminer restarts.

I wish I could attribute this to poor labor skill on my part, but I'm just about 100% certain I don't suck at apply thermal paste. =/

what kind of thermal paste did u use ??

to bsanders here is a great over clock s-3

your error method of hw/accepted would read 256/26646  .00960744577047  x 100 or .9607 percent

the correct method is 256/6821376+9472+256 =256/6831104 or .0000374564083 x 100 or .003745 percent

while the most important number is accepted it is not used for error calculations.

you can fuck with your accepts if you set diff very low or high say 16 or 2048

on btcguild while it should be 256 or 512.

I have two Antminer S3 that are both hashing at 440GBs. They both are running at the stock frequency of 218.75 but one if the miners has 20% HW errors. I have read many people are lowering the frequency to 215 or 212.75 to lower power consumption. I was hoping maybe reducing the frequency might help my HW errors. However I cannot find where to lower the frequency. I have done scrypt mining, but this is my first sha256 mining. If someone could help explain to me how to lower the frequency I would greatly appreciate it.

Underclocking early without having a solid reason will only lower your earning potential.
Are you sure you calculated your HW error % properly?
Post an image of your Miner Stats page.

I now have it underclocked so I cannot take a screenshot. But it had been running for almost two days. The accepts were 65,000 and the HW was in the 14,000.  It has now been running over 2 hours on 212.5 and accepts are 3,774 and HW are 370. So the current HW is at 9%.

The other miner which is still at 218.75 has 71,068 accepts and only 2,049 HW; only 2% HW.

that's NOT how you calculate the HW error percentage. Why under-clocking causes inability to take a screen shot?
You probably downshifted your machine(s) for no valid reason although people proposed to you to post your stats...
Formula is:

HW error %=HW / (diffA + diffR + HW) * 100

It seems like a thermal paste issue. But before doing anything do a firmware update or factory reset and check.
If its not working, open up the cover of your Antminer S3. Look for any loose cables.
Then swap your cables which run from control board to each blades.
After 5 minutes check the miner stats page, if its working, you are lucky.
Else if, there are any changes from your previous image post the new image.
This time if its not working next step is to try a thermal paste replacement.
I expect this will solve your issue.

Try this thread as it has lots of good starter tips.  There is also a PSU thread from there that  covers a lot of good PSU's.  Most people are doing 2 ants to a 1 PSU so 850 ish will get you some safety and OC if you want to do that.

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/guide-dogies-comprehensive-bitmain-antminer-s3-setup-hd-702653

Depending on which pool you use you don't technically need a wallet as you can send from the pool to an exchange direct if you want to cash them out.  If you are wanting to hold onto the coins then get the bitcoin wallet sync'ed (this can take a day) and then you can transfer them to a cold wallet.  Make sure to back this up as it is essentially holding the bitcoins on your HD.

JennaK

This is a decent guide to get you started.  PSU's you get what you pay for.  If you cheap out then expect cheap out results.

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/guide-dogies-comprehensive-power-supply-analysis-486121

Also most any decent PSU if you decide to start farming it can be sold for reasonable money if it has good warranty remaining.  Gamers love 850's as they can run cards and stuff easy.  500 is kinda common.

Just my quarter.  And guys can we stick to just giving the answers and links.  Telling them to do their homework is useless.  They are trying to do it here.

For those talking about Miners stabilizing can we just clarify that this stabilization is simply the "average" and based on variance of the pool and each miner the "average" will  "look" more stable with longer mining times.

let's not confuse stabilizing with the average. And like the previous poster pointed out if the variance is -/+ 50 Mhash then this will look unstable until it has a long enough "average" to make it look stable....get what i'm saying...

Thanks jpchrist, thats exactly what I was looking for. I had read through this entire 200+ page thread and only saw people say they were doing it, but not how. It was pretty easy and I lowered down to 212.5 and the HW errors dropped from +20% down to 8% and I only lost 20GHs. It must be some hardware issue with this miner, as my other one runs at 218.75 and has 2% HW errors. But I can work with 8%, much better than it was before.

Oh side note, the S3 that is mining fine was from www.bitmainantminer.com  I saw many posts that they were a scam and to cancel your order, blah blah blah. I figured if they didn't send it I could always dispute it on my credit card. However it arrived as promised and works great.
