I wish I could have posted this in a more better place but since the thoughts came from gambling addiction, I thought it wise to ask this question over here and I hope we can discuss and get this straight.

Just as the tittle already ask, I really want to know if people who are successful in gambling also seen as addicts because I believe  for one to be successful in gambling or whatever they choose to do, there must be some good amount  of time and effort invested in it as well as money and we know that a successful  gambler must have invested  both time, effort and even money to make any reasonable  winning  and these also are features of an addict as there are always excessive time spent on a betting site.

Now let's be sincere, will you also classify a successful gambler as an addict?

Weird question. It all depends on the circumstances and sometimes these properties can be present in a person at the same time, but in most cases not, as it seems to me. If we change gambling to another activity - for example, to esports, then we will see a lot of esportsmen who spend all their time on competitions, but they are not addicted. Why can't this be in gambling?

There's a margin of gamblers in the competitive scene that could be considered addicts if you'll ask me. Some of them go on gambling sprees that takes them until sunrise, and only get away with such unhealthy behaviors because they are winning and they know how to play the game. These people, just as much as the guys who lost so much from gambling, need help and intervention so they can get rid of the constant need to gamble. This is for those that are successful in the competitive scene.

For casual gamblers who bagged massive wins in one of their gambling sessions, I don't think throwing the "addicted" title willy-nilly is fair now is it. Just cause you won something big doesn't mean you're addicted to gambling. There has to be something indicative of it, like him gambling for straight weeks on end without fail in hopes of getting that bag, or something else.

I know someone that are doing very good with Sport betting, especially Horse racing... and that is his full-time job. He bets on horse racing on a daily basis and he makes good money... so does that make him a gambling addict?

People draw their own conclusions when they hear about people who are gambling professionally..... and in most instances, these people are seeing their gambling as a career.

A successful addict. This would be encouraging if you use this title on your online profile.

If a person has been successful in gambling already, it means he has already come up with a strategy of his own kinda like the people we see in poker tournaments who bets more than $200K never folds. Yep, those guys are not addicts anymore they've passed that stage a long time ago. Some of them stop in the middle of the game to relax, light up a cigar, and then back to their table not minding what they missed.

I don't think that successful gamblers are seen as addicts. When someone tells about being addicted in gambling, it's mostly describing about a person who's not successful and have got nothing at all but vices.

That's the norm and first impression that someone will think about if they're going to talk about successful gamblers. But if you're going to discuss about addicted gamblers, you'll just gonna give all the negative traits and descriptions about him.

It doesn't mean that a successful gambler won't be addicted, maybe that comes after.

I'd be reluctant to do so if the gambler was winning consistently.
I'll have a question for those of you who think such people are addicts. Do you also see business owners dedicated to earning money and expanding as addicts? What if a business owner spends all day every day at work, but earns a lot of money doing so. You'd probably think of him as dedicated, not addicted.

We have pur own perspective on what is a successful gambler and an addicted gambler. For me, successful gamblers shouldn't be seen as an addict because I believe that addicts are gamblers who don't stop playing even if there are obvious negative effects to them, they just won't stop compared to successful gamblers who majority of them can stop knowing that they can take home profits and can control themselves is not losing all of their money in a way that they don't have money to play for their next gambling  session.
I think it is kinda similar or it is the same. Whether they are successful or not it will always based on their behavior. Some gamblers have been successful but not get addicted because they have a control for some yes they are but it becomes their habit and as time passes by their addiction will come in and their winnings and money will slowly getting out of their hands.

No buddy, I won't gonna classify a successful gambler with the addicted word.I actually want to know what do you think by successful gambler? Got a big jackpot at once or is gambling regularly and winning?
If you consider winning the big jackpot to be a successful gambler, then I'd say it can't be successfulness. Whether it can be called as Successfulness that when a gambler do gambling with his skills and strategies. But I don't think successful gambling means not facing loss every gambler has face the loose and in case of them who have good skills and strategies and use them for gambling they called as succesfull. So as skilled attached so I think don't need to be addicted to becoming a successful gambler.

First, let's talk about addiction and addicts. Those who can not stop doing or using something are called addicts. Only because the successful ones have put their time and effort into gambling does not make them addicts. Also in order to become successful, you need to know when to start and when to stop. Addicts can not stop once they get into it. That's the difference between addicts and successful gamblers. Yes, they may put the same time as addicts but they know the rules and can control their urges. That's why they are successful. That's not the case with addicts.

For this reason, I will not call a successful gambler addicted to gambling.

I believe we all know or have heard phrases like these: "practicing something a lot makes that person acquire a lot of experience" and we can see this in real life, for example when a person studies medicine, that person doesn't leave school right away college to go directly to perform an operation on a patient, and that person needs to be practiced, and watch the experienced doctors how they are working. You can also see this with airline pilots, they take an airplane pilot course, they spend many hours in the simulator and then spend many hours as co-pilots until they acquire the necessary experience.

answering your question: no, a professional gambler and even a person spending many hours in the game every day does not make him addicted to gambling, the fact that a person is successful in gambling does not make him a person addicted to gambling bad luck. you need to see that there are people who work in the casinos, they are professional people who are in the casino every day, but how many people who work in the casino have you heard that got addicted to gambling? how many casino owners have you heard who got hooked on gambling? out of 40 casino owners probably not even 5 you won't hear are addicted to gambling

the most important thing is to have self control, those guy ( dealer ):

everyday he goes to work at the casino and you won't see them becoming addicted to gambling

Addiction happens with a person when his mind doesn't think of anything other than gambling. Mostly this takes place when a person loss continuously. He/She will think of recovering the lost amount in gambling, some will be successful while the rest will losing further. This keep the addiction continue. Successful gamblers have control on their gambling activity and they won't get addicted easily.

One need to understand well about gambling before getting into it. This is how one can keep his gambling activity good without getting into addiction. Gamblers should know when to start and when to take a break to keep the gambling activity healthy.

Successful gamblers are different from most gamblers because successful gamblers have advantages over other gamblers so they can balance gambling and their lives and enjoy their wins. Successful gamblers have more advantages so they can be wise in playing gambling and will not experience problems. Even though they may encounter problems in gambling, they will calm down while looking for a way out. So I guess successful gamblers are not gambling addicts because they can control themselves well.

The only difference of successful gambler to the normal gambler is that they have a decent gambling skills to get a consistent win result but I think this is only applicable on skill based games like sportsbetting and poker. Luck based games usually very hard to become successful because there’s no fixed strategy or formula in able to get a consistent profit. I doubt a balance life is the key to become successful since most successful poker player usually play a lot of time poker to hone their skills. They only have a balance life once they already become successful and not during their active career.

IMO, when talking about gambling addiction, everyone has their own perspective and that is normal because everyone has their own assumptions and stages about the classification of gambling addicts.
But for me personally as long as we are still gambling even though it is with money that can be said to be unused and has limits on gambling, but when it is done regularly every day or once a week it is the same as a gambling addict because even though our defence will definitely say it is entertainment or to relax ourselves from the fatigue of work or business, I still think it is just an excuse.
Not naive I can also be categorised as an addict in this case still I don't really care too much about being called a gambling addict because for some conditions I have other thoughts as long as the money I give to gambling is limited and does not exceed my limits then I'm not too worried about the word "gambling addict".

I disagree!

For addiction (regardless of what it is) is a person's loss of control over something, characterized by the compulsive practice of needing to do that. It can be called addiction when there is damage or worsening of the person's quality of life due to the negative consequences of the practice of a certain behavior.

An addicted gambler will never be successful in gambling, because he does not know how to manage his time and money, and even if he wins a lot, the addiction will make him lose everything quickly.

Successful players love the game, but they are not addicted.

Depends if they are having no control of their actions such as stopping to play the moment they want to. But if they don't have such control then they might be in such condition already. They might be winning at this point but if it is gambling addiction then things would fall eventually. All of your winnings would be turned into loss if you'd be playing continuously simply because winning will never be certain as we all know. The longer you play, the bigger the tendency to lose in the long run.
Addiction makes reference to a disfunctional behavior. Since successful gamblers are having triumph on this activity, we can say it's being functional for them, therefore it's something healthy, positive, rewarding and profitable, without any financial damage, although there is an aspect gamblers must be attentive to, even if they are successful: to not live for gambling exclusively. It's important to keep in mind there are another activities they have to practice and that it's not healthy to spend all day long in front of a device screen placing bets, making analysis and following the news.

In this case, despite they being successful on the financial sense, the behavior is still disfunctional thinking on social and physical aspects, therefore an addiction can be spotted there and must be treated accordingly with a professional attendance.
I agree with the effects to function on a daily basis. The question is, how would a gambler define success? is it on the amount won? For sure it won't be limited on such aspect alone. There's more to determine if you are already successful or not.

To me the term "successful gambler" and "addicted to gambling" are incompatible, because if a person ends up winning money during their gambling sessions and quits, when we could call that person a successful gambler. Because they know when to stop in order to enjoy their money. I think this mostly apply on poker players and other games which need some skill in order to win. Not only luck.

On the other hand, if a person is addicted to gambling, then it does not matter much whether he earns money in one of their sessions, that money will likely go back into the casino's trunk, since he would not know when or how to stop.

I don't think others referred to successful gamblers as addicts. Most likely, they are referred as lucky gamblers and most of them are professional gamblers that play poker, for example, those in tournaments. Meanwhile, if you are a loser but still keep on playing, prioritize gambling over important matters. They are called a gambling addict.
So, it seems what you want to mean is if you lose gambles, you are a gambling addict. I don't think so.
Because for me, what being a gambling addict is you can't control it. So, if we say, most of our gambling is winnings and we can't control it, we can't control winning and gambling every time, I can tell it's still an addiction.
For example, you cant control your gambling urges or irritable when you are not gambling, I can say it's addiction.

Maybe as part of their process of becoming a successful gambler, they might come first noticing themselves as an addict. Those are just momentary failures and character flaws. That overtime they developed a correct mindset in which brought them to successful trading. Those failures will serve as their frame of reference for them not to do again being a successful gambler. Things like over risking, overgambling, also putting alcohol or smoke in their gambling.

It's like starting in a losing game then creating their own path correcting their own mistakes then becoming successful.
