I totally agreed to what you said about holding and not selling of altcoin like ETH but I believed XRP is also another altcoin which people ought for long because ETH and XRP seems to be the coin which Amazon could accept as payment if they're indeed going to use cryptocurrency. Secondly, I believe people can sell his/her altcoin anytime as long he/she is not selling at lost price.

In times like this, its better to secure profits and not hope for 10x of some sort. I think we need to get lower before we can have another profitable bull run.

Its really good if you can buy them at ICO price then wait for the pump before offloading them. Based on my experience, I was able to sell them at the right time although I sold, the price continues to soar but at least I have already made lots of profit and I don't want to be greedy plus my exit strategy was satisfied that's why its time to sell them. So if you have altcoins get them while they are cheap (pre-Sale or ICO price), wait till they are listed on an exchange, then wait for the pump, offload as soon as you exit plan is met. Rinse and Repeat.

how the hell would anyone know the right time to sell? you can sell when you already have a profit, for example you bought and sold when you reached the profit of 300% and the following week the currency increased 700%. see that you would not know that the currency would rise 700%. In my opinion, the best time to sell them is the price that is higher than the price you bought. Be patient for a long time, and wait for higher prices when you buy. They sell them. You can keep them for long term if you think that particular Altcoin has the potential of growing in future. But be careful, crypto market is highly volatile so the price can fall anytime. So it ok to earn small profits but if you are willing to take risk, go for long term, at least for a year. But only with coins you trust. They can be really rewarding any coin which are actually working on their platform.

Altcoins are never the long term hold. Bitcoin is for holding in long term.
