I didn't find any information epochtalk/epochtalk-vue is port of epochtalk/epochtalk front end, no wonder some people assuming Epochtalk is abandoned. But since epochtalk/epochtalk last updated on "May 11, 2021", i'm not sure whether to interpret whether the back-end already ready for production usage or the developer currently focus on front-end
epochtalk/epochtalk is not maintained anymore
epochtalk/epochtalk-vue is the Epochtalk V2.0 VueJS version that is currently in the works. Both back-end and front-end were ported to use the VueJS syntax.

CMIIW, but what you say conflicted with README on epochtalk/epochtalk-vue. It mention usage of epochtalk/epochtalk as server.

Setup old epochtalk project to run as server

FWIW the frontend is pretty much ported with the last pull request and work will start on the backend / server side. That will definitely take less times to port the route files and the rest.

... In case you were wondering  Tongue

That's because they started porting the frontend first and were still using the old angular version to start the server and have a working development environment.

But the backend is also being ported and when that is done the old angular version will not be needed anymore. No use having 2 instances in 2 javascipt flavours to run an app.

No spoilers, but may come with some interesting features that might jog a bit that demand. It may be wishful thinking on my part but at this point one can only hope  Tongue

The Beta environment hasn’t been running for years now. I don’t recall ever trying it out myself, and when I queried on the matter, we did get an answer as to why it was not running:

So does it mean that their work on the Epochtalk software has been postponed and/or the Epochtalk project is canceled?

I thought that the Epochtalk project is delayed and might be live one day but now it seems we will stick to the SMF forums which is also not bad in my opinion.
The underlying reasons why new forum software was needed in the first place has largely been resolved via code changes in the existing smf implementation. So it is no longer urgent for new forum software to be used.

I also believe that Theymos wants the new software to be “war tested” for security issues before implementing it on bitcointalk, but there appears to be little demand for the software on other forums (there are also a limited number of forums that have the level of commerce that bitcointalk has.

In other words, I don’t think the new software is ever going to be implemented.

I couldn't believe how I excitedly jumped on thus topic hoping it's a new one opened by theymos.

Pretty sure everyone had that feeling after the thread was bumped to the first page  Grin

Knowing that the project was abandoned ...
I am kind of disappointed the project got abandoned.

How do you know the project was abandoned Huh
not more than 2 weeks ago I was in a call with Cyrus and two of the devs about some backend details. When Epochtalk will be ready for public use we'll most likely have the beta subdomain back. Last commit was made 23h ago...

Oops! This wasn't abandoned. Just how long it is taking made me use the word abandoned. I withdraw it as I see that last commit was made 30mins ago. This is an evidence that work is going on behind the scene. A big thumb up.

I see that the last commit was about adding email to reports by users?  Will users need to include email address for every report being made?

Well, let me be less curious and expect the launch whenever.

Not to beat the dead (or unborn) horse, but the mere fact that a framework went EOL while the forum software hasn't been released yet (or had a solid beta because let's face it - the product we've seen so far shouldn't have made it past alpha QA) is kinda indicative of where this is going. Now we're more than a year into rewriting for a new framework.

Right now they still have a bit more code to port to Vue and should be operational.
After that we can "argue" about CSS, layout style etc. We can even have a contest who forks the github repo and designs the best UI/UX theme for it. Dunno, just an idea  Tongue

Talking about backend, looks like it's last updated on May 11, 2021[1]

The current repo that is being worked on is https://github.com/epochtalk/epochtalk-vue (25 May 2022 last update to master, and 10 hours ago last commit in another branch . AngularJS is EOL and the code is being ported on VueJS.

I don't know far is Epochtalk development, but IMO open source alternative such as Discourse or Forem should be considered if Epochtalk is still far from finished or ready to be deployed.

The last update was that there were some back-end stuff left to port to VueJS, get the parser set up (there was a little discussion about it here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/epochtalk-parser-poll-come-and-vote-your-preference-5283998), update the dependencies (some older versions are still being used to work with AngularJS) and hopefully should be ready to fire up that beta.bitcointalk sub-domain Smiley

How do you know the project was abandoned

A project being in "beta" for too long is more or less in development hell.

While there might be some commits here and there (and they're mainly restricted to the subforum), many have gotten over the fact that we might not even see its light of the day.

Not trying to sound negative, but it shouldn't be taking this long for an UI/ software overhaul. Core functions available and those bells and whistles be added along the way, not all lumped into the main release.

I am just coming about this thread for the first time and I had exactly the same feeling,  Grin.
I actually screamed "wow" out loud before opening the thread, and quickly, my eyes went to the date the thread was created and I discovered its from way back 2016, then immediately, the excitement died out, checking on the epochtalk link, I discovered the project is no longer online.
This indeed must have been an attempt on something that's really good, I am kind of disappointed the project got abandoned.

I couldn't believe how I excitedly jumped on thus topic hoping it's a new one opened by theymos. Though I was quick to check the page and noticed it was old. However, I didn't know such a good attempt has been made to launch another forum software as far back as 2016.
What different features had it then that made it a beta version?
Knowing that the project was abandoned could be a clear indication that even if a new software is launched by theymos, it could be abandoned for this, unless this won't be functional anymore.

Yo this thread is low-key hilarious.

However, I don't think the forum should be changed. It would be dishonorabru to Satoshi's legacy.

Dunno what should be done with all the funds collected for it. As of now, it seems like their main purpose is to be slowly siphoned off to the "treasurers."

They should probably be donated to the Bitcoin Core developers, though somewhat incrementally.

I realize there's no Bitcoin Foundation anymore for good reason. Theoretically such a thing could act as stewards for donated funds, but for whatever reason positions in that type of entity just naturally attract sleazebags.

Ultimately it doesn't matter so long as the forum remains basically as is. Kind of like the blockchain.

Since there is no reply recently from theymos on this thread proofs that there will be no Epochtalk.

However, I was just seeing that we have a child board New forum software dedicated to this possible new forum. What's the use of keeping this child board open when the plans for launching Epochtalk are postponed ?

When I saw this thread, my first thought was that it was a new one even though I saw it was quite a few pages long--I thought I might have missed it in the past couple of days.  I chuckled when I opened it and saw how old it actually is and realized for just how long I've been hearing about the fabled New Forum Software.

I'm almost certain said new software is never coming out, though I haven't checked for any new developments in the thread dedicated to it.  I'm just assuming that since it's taken so long, things that might have been worked on in the past would be, if not obsolete, not real improvements to the forum as it currently is.  Fine by me, though.
You're not alone. I haven't checked Meta for few days and I already thought that's new topic. I actually completely forgot about Mew forum software, there weren't any talks about it for a while. I'm not even sure that development of continues. I'm fine with current software, but it would be shame that after spending so much money on it, new forum software won't be released.
Still, I believe that new forum software will be released earlier than hell will freeze over Cheesy.

Actually funny thing is I took a slight hiatus (over a year) from BTCTalk. I came back, and first thought was to check on the status of the new forum. I can't say I'm surprised. Especially seeing the lack of commits on the repo.

So does it mean that their work on the Epochtalk software has been postponed and/or the Epochtalk project is canceled?

I thought that the Epochtalk project is delayed and might be live one day but now it seems we will stick to the SMF forums which is also not bad in my opinion.

I think the truth is that no one really knows anymore. So much time has passed and the people who worked on Epochtalk probably moved their focus to new projects a long time ago. Is there anyone from the original development team still working on Epochtalk or is everything solely in the domain of the open source community?

I see guys, thanks! Cheesy Also sorry for necroposting; I just thought it wasn't worth opening a new thread just for asking where / how to test the beta forum software.

For me it's fine, too! Not sure why an upgrade would be needed to be fully honest. But I'm sure this has been extensively discussed for years already and doesn't fit this topic anyway.
