... since macOS is actually linux ...

Quick, you better tell Apple that!! I'm sure they believe it's BSD!!!!!

BSD and Linux are different, even if very similar.

I personally consider Apple to be more Mach then BSD since I place significance on the kernel structures, though the userland is related to FreeBSD.  Probably would have been, or would now be, closer to Linux but for license issues.

And BSD vs. Linux have some pretty significant differences in things like the USB stack so 'very similar' is arguable.

Does anyone know what the deal would be with import taxes and/or VAT for this stuff coming into the EU?  Specifically either Poland or Sweden?
To Denmark: You are to pay VAT + handling fee + tax. VAT is 25% of what you paid for the item, including the shipping fee. The handling fee is ~100DKK, and the tax is a few percent, depending on the country from which the item was sent. If the item is sent from the US, there is no tax on electronics.

AFAIK, the rules for Sweden are the same as Denmark, but the handling fee and tax might vary a bit. I suspect the same thing goes for Poland, except that they have only 23% VAT.

The above goes for items sent from a country outside the European Union. If the item is sent from within the EU, there are no extra charges.

Yes, cgminer can run on Mac (if you're lucky/clever in compiling it, or get someone lucky/clever to do it for you) but I saw some mention of a USB driver that's needed, which I presume you won't find for OSX.  *Edit: perhaps I'm too pessimistic, I see a Mac driver listed here:

http://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/Pages/USBtoUARTBridgeVCPDrivers.aspx

Again, I don't know for sure either way if it can work (just taking an educated guess here based on previous experience mining for Bitcoins on Mac) but just wanted to point out that either way you have the VM option.

Can anyone who's got one in hand tell us for sure?

in ubuntu 12.04,  the kernel have the driver
and in Mac OS X 10.8, it also have driver, but the devices is something like /dev/tty.USBtoUART instead of /dev/ttyUSB0
you can also use other mine software such as python miner and java miner

Hi friedcat!

Will these work on OS X?

I've assumed the answer to this is 'no', but given that it is just a USB stick you might have luck with running a Linux or Windows VM in VMWare or something and assigning that USB port to the VM.

I think it is: 80mm x 40mm x 18mm

[edit:]

or, as I and a work colleague will be, you are going to use them to teach your children a bit about the cryptocurrency, then you might value them differently!

1. Plug in USB-Stick
2. Tell children that it mines Bitcoins now
3. Huh
4. Children have learned the whole Bitcoin-Thingy
5. Profit!

There's more to it of course:

1. Setting up a PC / embedded system
2. Installing / managing a Linux system (under supervision of course)
3. Installing the mining software
4. Configuring and maintaining the whole system
5. Earn some pocket money for doing above

I run Linux on my abacus.
I am talking about financial return from mining bitcoin. I am considering grabbing some for the novelty, but honestly just haven't done my due diligence on whether the price point makes sense as a financial investment.

You won't get much if any ROI. You might break even in 8+ months or so, but that depends entirely on how much hashrate comes online in the next months.

tl;dr - overpriced toy with no resale value.

Has anyone done a rough return on investment estimate on these?

tldr: You'll never see the money back. Its like buying a 7790 but at double the cost.

Yea it does feel a little pricey for the hash rate, although these would use significantly less electricity.

It depends what you are looking for in return - pure money from mining Bitcoin? Best estimate I've seen is approximately 12-24 months to recover their cost, depending on what the difficulty does over that time.

If, however, you want them more as a novelty, or, as I and a work colleague will be, you are going to use them to teach your children a bit about the cryptocurrency, then you might value them differently!

Random thought: wouldn't these be even cooler if they could be daisy chained? I'd imagine the power draw of putting these in series would be prohibitive though...
