There's a chance that Magsayo can ask for rematch but this will happen if the camp of Vargas would agree on this since many fans still want to watch their match because this match can be consider as unfinish business.

Well. Every featherweight wanted to fight WBA champion Leo Santa Cruz. Magsayo too but he cannot escape from his mandatory. Right after the fight, Vargas also called for a unification showdown with Santa Cruz.

Mark Magsayo will need to fall in line now since there was no rematch clause. Vargas wanted LSC. But it also looks like the WBC is ready with another mandatory in Brandon Figueroa. There's also Russell Jr. who claimed to have lost his title to Magsayo due to an injured arm and inactivity which seem legit too.

I think Magsayo needs to re-assess himself. I cannot see many improvements from him in the past few years. The only improvement I saw with his fight against Vargas was knowing how to clinch. And that's actually very basic when you're at the world level. I'm pretty sure Roach taught him a lot. Head movements, jabbing, foot work, combinations, and setting up power punches. It's just that Magsayo cannot execute them inside the ring. Magsayo could've finished off Vargas in the late rounds should he have learned to set up those power punches properly. And not just throw them like Deontay Wilder.

And I will say that it was really boring, a snoozer fight and I'm right. When I check the score afterwards it is Vargas who won on the score card. So I guess Magsayo is just another hype fighter, just B level to me, in my opinion. Not in the same breathe as other Filipino greats like Manny and Nonito.

It has become boring because Vargas was just playing with the points, he made sure to use his advantage over Magsayo and he was really effective in doing that. He got a good coach as well, so I'm not surprised that he won the fight. Magsayo has the power but he lacks speed, he could not destroy the defense of a taller boxer, so I guess better luck next time if rematch is going to happen.

He's not a champion anyway, right? He knows how to use his advantages and from what I've seen, he really understands how Magsayo fight so he didn't give Magsayo a chance to penetrate; he keeps his distance and keeps throwing punches away to make sure that Magsayo won't be able to get a good look when trying to attack him.

Yes, there's always another chance for Magsayo. He can call for a rematch and re-try to bring back his belt.

That's how smart fighter out scored his opponent and Vargas show some good fight there. Feel sorry for Magsayo because he down play his opponent and do swaggering before anything else. Now there's no Philippine champion and its a huge shame for organization because almost all of them has been wiped out by their opponent. There's a chance that Magsayo can ask for rematch but this will happen if the camp of Vargas would agree on this since many fans still want to watch their match because this match can be consider as unfinish business.

I think Vargas was an x champion, so he knows the feeling of a champion and how to be a champion. The criticism on Magsayo is real, his last 2 fights was not so convincing and Rey Vargas here were very careful not getting him by a punch that would bring him down for a KO lose.

Only possible if the camp of Rey Vargas will agree.

Mark Magsayo started to show some stamina loss in just the 4th round. That was unusual to him.

Rey Vargas really put a tough job on the champion making Magsayo release much effort right at the early rounds. Magsayo's quickness that supposed to be his advantage, isn't utilized much. However, even with that situation, the Champion was able to put some damage too on his challenger in the later rounds but Vargas owned him in the end.

115-112 Vargas, 114-113 Magsayo, 115-112 Vargas - almost a unanimous decision for Vargas.

So unfortunate for Magsayo but Vargas deserves the win. Big Respect to him.

Agreed. I stopped watching on round 8 because it was beginning to become very boring. Anyone who was watching would know already that Vargas would be the winner.

Also, were much of the voters of the poll from the Philippines? There are 15 votes for Magsayo and there is only 1 vote for Vargas hehehehe. Who is the Mexican poster in the thread?

Same here, didn't finished the fight, it was obvious that the boxer I'm supporting is not going to win because he didn't have any to offer in this fight. He talks about Vargas not running, but he didn't have the skills as well and make the fight exciting.

I agree with the B Level type of boxers, he was just lucky in his previous fights but when he faced a real challenger, that's where he struggles. He does not go all out war with the challenger, when Vargas are using his advantage, Magsayo should be more aggressive to score a knock out.

I'm not a hater but even though he won via knockout against Ceja before. I'm not impressed with his performance in that fight. Now, he shouldn't have aimed for a KO against Vargas or maybe should have focus on getting points until half or more than half of the match before aiming for KO. Also, he should improve his stamina. He isn't old yet. Sure he can get back to his best form.

I was also not impressed with his performance against Ceja. Magsayo has never been very good in making points. He has a powerful punch though. But if that punch fails to deliver him a knockout, he is facing the risk of being outpointed and lost. When Magsayo finished that fight against Ceja by knockout, he was actually losing in points in all of the judges' scorecards.

This is the same with his match against Vargas. The only difference is that Vargas wasn't knocked out.

Lack of follow-up on his side, he should go for the KO when Vargas knocked down but he did not give everything as if he was leading in the scoring. Magsayo has to learn how to finish a fight, he should follow the style of Inoue that once he saw his opponent get hurt, he will use the opportunity to finish the opponent.

Great job for Rey Vargas in this title fight. Boxing is oftentimes a game of points. Vargas proved that once more. Despite being knocked down, he was still able to snatch that belt off from Magsayo. Vargas still outpointed Magsayo.

Looking for a knockout may actually change the game especially if it fails. Magsayo's head-hunting and strong desire to disregard the judges' scorecards by winning by way of knockout backfired. The KO remained an attempt while Vargas was consistent on taking points.

If only he did score another knock down, maybe he has a chance, or if he didn't put himself dipper in the first 5 rounds, the 115-112 could be different. But he left Vargas be comfortable in the early rounds and there is no adjustment on his side and just rely on his power to score a knock down which didn't happen. Vargas fought a intelligent fight, not to engage Magsayo early and then uses his reach and height advantage to it's limit that's why Mark was not able to get his usual power shot early.

Yeah, I agree with what most posters said, it's just a basic Magsayo in this fight. Doesn't have the gast tank to last, his punches doesn't sting except for that flash knockdown.

So no convincing win for him, on the contrary, his critics are going to feast on Mark now as his win is a fluke against a one hand Gary Russell Jr. Congrats to Vargas for his second belt.

Magsayo struggled to get near Vargas because the latter maintained his position always and just like you said, Vargas used his height and reach advantage to get the most score out of Magsayo. It was anticipated that Vargas would use his advantages but it wasn't expected that Magsayo can't get much punch to Vargas.

In the late rounds, Magsayo managed to knock down Vargas but it was a little too late as the latter already dominated the early round until the middle rounds. Better luck next time kabayan.

Magsayo doesn't give a variety of punches.  He is hooked on knocking Vargas out rather than scoring which is Vargas strategy.  Magsayo should have avoided being a head hunter and should have thrown on the body more.  If you watch the fight lots of those punches aimed to the head missed.  Magsayo should have targeted the body to slow down Vargas at least.

I hope to see a Rematch and a different Magsayo because if Magsayo got a rematch and doesn't change his fight style then we can only see the same result, unless of course he knocked Vargas out or Vice versa.

The decision is split so there's a chance to have a rematch if the promoter saw a demand from the viewer that ask for it. Magsayo definitely deserves rematch because he is the previous champion and to seal this match to a more convincing result. Personally, I don't like Magsayo due to his attitude and just basic attack moves. But I hope to see him again for a rematch as a support to fellow countryman.
The promoter will analyze the huge profit potential to register a rematch for both boxers who have performed spectacularly in the main card opening fight, I believe Magsayo has a high chance of competing again with Vargas, because several rounds Magsayo almost dominated many chances to win, he has proven the mentality to beat Vargas down although Vargas was finally able to bounce back to dominate in the last few rounds. I'm also really looking forward to the rematch, hoping some boxing news will soon update the good news about the rematch next year.
Probably there’s a demand here since many expect Magsayo will win the title but the result is different, and as we all witnessed it a was great match up and that’s a good reason to have another match. Most probably, Magsayo will fight again to get a belt under his name, this is his first loss and of course not an end of his career, Magsayo will rise again.

A re-match is indeed possible to happen so let's see if the two camps will be up for it.
Many are rooting for Magsayo on this match, so I believe a lot were disappointed about the results.
As Magsayo already experienced Vargas inside the ring, he will now know how to strategize the next time around.
Hopefully the re-match will be this year, so they will settle this as early as possible.
Definitely, not the end game for Magsayo. He is still young to give up his boxing career with one loss.

The latest update Vargas beat Magsayo by a split decision Magsayo scored a

Vargas SD-12 against Magasyo (115-112, 113-114, 115-112) to become new WBC Featherweight champion.

Vargas dominated from round 3 to round 8 with his stiff jabs, he uses his height and reaches advantage to ward off Magsayo's attack, I don't know if its over confidence but it seems Vargas has played his game well compared to Magsayo but this one deserves a rematch if there is in the contract that there is one.

Magsayo struggled to get near Vargas because the latter maintained his position always and just like you said, Vargas used his height and reach advantage to get the most score out of Magsayo.
