I'm still waiting on a reply back from them.

How long does it take to get the email ( I'm wanting to pay by Dwolla )?
I'm so excited to get one, I just can't wait!

I ordered 2 last week 3/9, and I'm still waiting for payment instructions, so it seems they're backed up, unless I'm the only one.

Not just you, I'm waiting for instructions.

I received the payment instructions and wired them the money on 3/16.

Added a couple more to the bottom rack. Still nice and cool down there.

what's your total hashrate?

The computer the singles are all hooked to is about 6.5Gh right now. As for my total hash rate, that's rising by the week.  Grin

I thought there was some encryption involved so you specifically CANNOT reprogram them?
Thus they are only single use?
There is a chance that BFL, as the key owner, can make new bitstreams, but not the user.
Yes, sorry, that's what I meant.
I'm assuming only BFL can supply new bitstreams - so I guess if you wanted a new one you may have to pay them some amount to create it ...
Sure, they can create a new bitstream. But we don't know if the Singles can be user-upgraded in the field (now that would be convenient, via USB), or if they need to be shipped back to BFL for reflashing.

BLF-Engineer has never answered that question ...

Sonny told me that they can be flashed by customers, and they are going to release new bitstream which should increase performance later on, and those will be made available for download.
Well at least that answers one question Smiley

But the other point was to say that if you wanted to do something else with it, you most likely can't without asking BFL to provide you with a bitstream since they are encrypted and thus I'd guess it internally decrypts it so it may not be happy with an unencrypted bitstream.
If it was happy with an unencrypted bitstream - then I'm sure someone here could make a faster and/or better one Smiley
From my limited understanding of how FPGA's work, branches may not be as expensive as they are on GPU's so you may also be able to change certain aspects of how that is done on GPU mining.

However, an aside question about that: since it is encrypted and thus no source available, I presume BFL did write the whole bitstream themselves from scratch and didn't base it off someone else's that may require the source to be provided?

Hmm that just made me think of something ... the reason why this thread hasn't been moved to the FPGA section ... maybe coz it's not 100% known that the chip is an FPGA?

I do know there are brute force password crackers that use OpenCL-based GPUs.

I guess that's one thing you give up by going to a specialized device like BFL.  It's smaller and uses less power for the same hash rate as compared to a GPU but it can't be used for anything else.

Are these boxes good for anything useful besides BTC mining?  I know the BFL web site says they're for crypto, but what specific applications would a single be good for besides BTC mining?
Cracking SHA256-encrypted passwords or data.

You sure about that, it would require a new bitstream.  Has BFL provided you details on how to reprogram your device?  Care to share?  BFL indicated (but hasn't been verified yet) that the JTAG would be useless for even ID the chip being used much less reprogramming the device.
No clue.  Sorry, I just assumed that it could be programmed to run any SHA256 calculations.  Didn't know there were additional restrictions on it beyond that.

Whats the temp down there? Just curious.

Depends on the time of day. high 60s during most of the night and mid to upper 70s during the hottest part of the day.

May be some kind of MD5 bruteforcing, unlocking Nokia phones :)
The tasks that don't require high-speed data IO because there are no IO channels except for the USB.

Also since you don't know what exactly chip is used you can't develop a new bitstream/firmware.
