It depends. Yes they can be hacked. Everything is "hack-able". What matters here is the relationship that you have with the exchanger that you're using. I use ecoin.eu as my trading platform and they are a partner with an exchanger so it's really comfortable for me to use them. But what I can suggest is that you need to follow your instincts. You can follow other people's vouches/suggestions but it won't guarantee you anything unless you actually try them yourself.

That is why it is not advisabke to park your money in exchangers since as you've said it yourself it is completely out of your control. The only people who leaves their money there are those who need immediate funds for trading.

money needs exchange even MtGox dying, does not equal bitcoin dying. Not every person who owned bitcoin had bitcoin on MtGox. many people who own bitcoin have never used MtGox.

Howdy,
I've been using one for a couple months now and it's given no reason to mistrust it. But it seems weird to me sending my money to an intermediary that's neither a wallet nor a bank and is entirely online. Feels like the money is hanging out in some nowhere zone that isn't completely under my control...

Dies any one else feel this way or do I just not understand this stuff well enough yet?

Thanks!
Like with any business offering to store or manage your assets, ask yourself what happens if they fail ? and how likely they are to fail?

For now i only trust my local exchange. They have real company, and i know who's the owner.
Beside that they have a commitment to build bitcoin community in my country.

Which country are you from? I also trust my local exchange but we have 3 exchanges, I only trust 1. The one have legal issues and the other has no volume depth.

Yes we can definitely can relay on bitcoin exchanges. Because we need to convert our one coins into another for that we need exchanges with out any doubts. So check for credibility of that exchange then trade in them.

But we can't put it for a long time.
Remember ShareX or mintpal exchanger ? Once they are great exchanger and now they're close without being expected.
What happen to the fund that I kept there ? They take all  Sad

Remember bter? they were hacked too, but they got back to business, but they are paying users very little amount of lost bitcoins, something like <10% until now.

As long as you don't put ridiculous amounts of money in the exchanges, they they are mostly safe.

Still, I wouldn't use them as my main wallet.

Before MTGOX collapse this might be a stupid questions. Other than that exchange I have bees scammed by another exchange, after scam only I came to know which was from Nigeria.
There are many trusted exchange. We can believe them and deposit our hard earned bitcoins for exchange or for trading to make good bitcoins.

You never know if an admin is trustworthy, mark karpeles was trustworthy, the evolution market admins were trustworthy, Mintpal and etc.

The more that an exchange gain trust the more risk is being put in to them. Exchanges are made for short-term and not for long-term standing.

why do you think exchanges aren't supposed to last long? because hacks or inside job thefts? with time the security and the professionality of the exchanges is growing and growing. i do think that the top exchanges can last quite a long time.

Because there is a high risk by the time goes. Because of the inside "thefts", and exchanges should be one step forward in security field. So there is no 100% trust in exchanges.

You never know if an admin is trustworthy, mark karpeles was trustworthy, the evolution market admins were trustworthy, Mintpal and etc.

When I first became interested in BTC it was immediately apparent to me at least that Gox was a shower of shit and I never went anywhere near it. By their very nature no dark market can be trusted and the Evolution admins were self proclaimed carders.

The only positive that's come out of all these cons and failures is that eventually, just maybe, the average Bitcoiner won't fall for the same old shit over and over again. It still happens every day. My sympathy for future victims is now nil. There's enough precendents out there for them to know better.

Latest exchange many bitcoins were "stolen" by "hackers" and people are just afraid.
It is not a dark market eventhough it is something legit like in real life money exchange.
Also i saw a scam accusation here that is made to Cryptsy exchange so these things are happening real.

So we can conclude that we must never save our fund forever on the exchanger except you're ready to loss.
Since we do not know when will exchanger gonna collapse

Well you understood it, the conclusion is that exchange whatever you have and leave.
This is why the exchanges have been made.
But if you are a trader and trade a much then you should think yourself about the risk by putting all your btc in exchange.

You can't trust bitcoin exchanges but that doesn't mean everyone will run away with your coins...But yes never use bitcoin exchange as a wallet...Instead only use them to trade and store bitcoins locally, offline storage, paper wallet for best security Smiley

We need to look back, always learn from experience. Look at Mt.Gox, Mintpal, BitInstant, i'm not judge all bitcoin exchanger is bad, but we need to be more careful with store a money on there. I have bad experience with those btc exchanger.
