It will depend on the gambler himself because if the gambler is not an addicted gambler and only bets in his spare time, I guess it will be okay. But we as owners of that business, cannot let go of everything and hand over the responsibility to the gambler even though he is our close friend because it is our business. We have to remain fully responsible for our business so that we can monitor everything and make sure that everything is running smoothly.

If the problem gambler can fix his problem and won't cause any more problems, he deserves a second chance and can be trusted again. But we have to be careful and not give him full trust if we don't believe in him yet.

True life Story.
A friend i know recently narrated to me how his business almost collapsed due to trust he had for another of his friends who he thought he was helping by recruiting him to manage one of his Retail outlets. He narrated how having put him in charge of that point started observing a decrease in the the profit from there intended for savings and reinvestment. He confronted him severally to know what the problem was, but his friend attributed it to being ill and needing drugs, until one faithful day when he ran into him in a betting shop during working hours betting on virtual football games, how disappointing!

Don't want to be rude here, but I think your friend needs to reevaluate how he should run his business. He hired him to manage his outlet. That doesn't mean that he can take money from the business and buy medicines... I mean, if he wants, he can pay his wage upfront to buy his meds...

The question itself raises so negative aspects of trusting a gambler, so I would say nope, you can't trust a gambler with your money or your saving.
However, the question is why would you even think about giving your money to someone else to gamble when you can try your own luck?

- Are gamblers eligible to hold financial positions?
that really depends if the person is a compulsive gambler or not but without fully knowing the person and their history with gambling, I'd be cautious to put them in a position that handles finance.

- Do problem gamblers deserve a second chance to hold a financial position?
when it comes to business(just like your friend) people would not give them a second chance. it is just too risky and if it happened again, the owner is not the only one who will be affected.

He is not managing the retail outlet successfully and also the profit making is decreasing. Later, he was seen in a gambling shop or whatever, he was gambling? If gambling, I will not think two times to replace him for the time being. Business should never be about friends, it should be about someome that can manage the business successfully. I can also never trust a gambling addict.

First...
Business should be treated like business, involving friends or relatives is not a good idea, because the greater the trust you have in someone, the greater the possibility that they will believe that they can steal from you without you realizing it... it is better to hire someone, pay her well for it and monitor her frequently.

Second...
people who have an addiction, be it drugs, alcohol or gambling should never be trusted to handle money.

Yes as long as its you being the gambler. But if someone else handles it for you then its not your money anymore.

You can't even trust your wife to spend your money to your children or to her. Don't trust anyone but your own because them given the chance will get amounts unnoticed and before you know it, its too late because its already amounting to hundred thousands.

Yes , Gamblers can hold financial position. Infact most reputable firms have one/ two personnel who will think outside the box with new ideas and take risk using various strategy so as to make profit. Checking various probability of success and failure is essential before going into a business. It's all gambling

In other to answer your second question, i will base my opinion on our societal norms. Everyone deserves a second chance. Even a problematic gambler. However, caution should be taken because when dining with the devil, make sure you have a long spoon. . You must ensure your assets are secure and not entrust him with full access to it.

Questions for discussion
- Are gamblers eligible to hold financial positions?
- Do problem gamblers deserve a second chance to hold a financial position?

1. Yes, of course. It depends on what type of gambler that person is. There's a responsible and irresponsible gambler. Regardless of how addictive they are, if they are doing their best in their work, everything will be fine on the business side.

2. Why should we limit them especially if that's their expertise? As long as they will remain responsible all the way, there should be no problem.

Choosing the person, of course, should be personally known to you as you know them more than everyone.

There are gamblers that know their limits and know to keep their responsibilities separate from their habits.
However, they are also subject to temptation, depending on their desire to gamble.
We can always give them a chance but in case they bend their protocols once, then, think of the worst possible situation.
Better be cautious with things rather than regretting late. Definitely, they can be trusted but depends on their personality himself.
Yes and op is generalizing that all gamblers would really be like that and which same as you said that there are indeed people who could really able to control theirselves when it comes to their addiction or simply into

their gambling habits or activities on which they arent really that dumb on risking out their dayjob just because of their side hobby which it isnt really worth on exchanging the way on how you do make your living into

something which do only focuses on entertainment or something temporary which cant really able to make you sustain on day to day spending or expenses.

The first question seems to be already judging the book by its cover. Just because the term used is "gambler" seems to me that you already concluded all as addicted and dangerous. What if that person is really performing well on that work?

The second question has a clear answer. They should deserve a second chance as long as they are now a better person after being addicted to gambling.

Personally, I have knows lots of responsible gamblers over irresponsible ones. They are losing big almost regularly but outside gambling, they are being professional and their lives are not that affected. We can't just conclude gamblers are supposed to be a big problem later on. That's wrong.

In OP's story, I'm sure there are parts of the story that we didn't know. Putting the blame because of gambling doesn't make sense.

That is why when building a business, there needs certain attention and professionalism although they are our friends or even our family. That's why it is better not to involve friends or family in certain businesses if they cannot be professional. For, once bad condition happens, this will really influence the relationship between us and them.
Btw, this case can be really a good lesson for us here.

Well, actually this will depend on how professional the people are. But, if someone has been addicted to gambling, I personally will not choose them for the financial position because this is very risky to be like this case. Although not all gamblers like this, it is not working if we avoid the probabilities, isn't it?

^ This is a case-to-case basis and depends on the financial status of the gambler, but if you don't know him personally or there is no guarantee that he has responsible enough to hold a fund, then, why do you entrust him?
Even do gamblers and non-gamblers are the same, when it comes to money we should be careful who should we trust especially in a business.
Your question is definitely hard to answer because it will matter in the situation, the only thing that I can assure is to know him personally before putting trust because trust cannot be asked, it should be gained.

This is a case by case scenario problem here imo. If all gamblers had problems handling money, I swear gambling would've been banned long long ago. And I wouldn't really give a gambler a second chance, most of their bad habits come from compulsiveness and that isn't anything closely similar to a simple mistake, no, it's way worse.

It's kinda dumb though how he recruited him based on friendship and not resume. It's all good to help a friend BUT this was a retail owner position. Friend or not,  they should've checked his credentials and work experience properly first.

Trust is one of the problem we are having when it come to fund or a particular high position. This is a big case of study and we need to put ourselves in this shoe to understand the storyline because I have lost huge sum of capital because of thesame mistake I made. I can not entrust my fund with a friend, not even closed friends without taking a thorough observation on how they roll with the fund or position. I am too careful these days on similar thing so it will not come close to my sight again.

In my case I would just give my friend an amount of money that I know I wouldn't miss if he lost, I wouldn't give him money that I need to pay bills or that I need to eat or that I need to play games and have fun , friendship does not mean that the person has to trust blindly in his friend, sincerely in the current world it is necessary to be careful with anyone, even if it is someone you are living with every day, even so this person can attack you in the back

- Are gamblers eligible to hold financial positions?

yes, as long as the person is not addicted to gambling and is a responsible person, that person can hold any position. who determines whether or not a person is in a position to assume a certain position because he is addicted to gambling is a doctor, only the doctor after an exam can determine someone's incapacity

- Do problem gamblers deserve a second chance to hold a financial position?

definitely not! it would be too risky to put some ex-gaming addict in a position where he is dealing with money, i would take it if he is dealing with roles and people but not money

1. Everything does have freedom on whatever positions that they are tending to apply on, its up to the employer if they would simply attached those personal information in regarding your situation
which might be some basis whether they would be accepting you or not.

2. There would no problems if you dont really let yourself do involved your work out of your gambling addiction. Its up to someone if they would really be commiting some crimes or violations
which do attached with their work which is a dumb thing to be done imho.

A financial position or lending money two different things.  I generally don't like lending money to a hard core gambler because you are only begging for them to feed their addiction and sever personal ties.  But them holding a financial position like stocks or crypto is a little different.

- Are gamblers eligible to hold financial positions?
The average gambler who is responsible will still hold the company's finances for safe, not for betting, but it is rare to find a qualified gambler to hold finances of a company. In real life according to my personal experience, an owner will not do that by entrusting finances to people even though he is a friend. Previously will see a history of skills in managing money, well behaved of course and can be trusted, criteria for gamblers are not included in the list but I don't know in other countries.
- Do problem gamblers deserve a second chance to hold a financial position?
Of course not, because he's still a problem gambler. Things will repeat themselves with every temptation of an unhealthy mindset, unless he has given up gambling and has common sense.
