i have a registry file with 1300 soc clock(found somewhere in this forum), if i use this values and set memoryclock to 1215. hashrate spikes after few minutes to >2000hs for a second then gpu crashes...its like compute gets activated for a short time

That is indeed a bug in the blockchain driver. But it does not matter as the value is only informative and not taken into consideration. The actually available compute units on the Vega 56 are indeed 56.

Do the blockchain driver not work with non reference cards? As the OEMs are just building different cooling designs on the cards?

I am not a conspiracy type person but I find this completely crazy, odd and so on...

This also does not bode well for NAVI cards using GDDR6 as AMD may never allow true mining performance to be recognized via the driver. Right now the Blockchain compute drivers look like either a fluke, mistake or some devious ploy to deny. If you have a reference AMD vega 64 you should consider yourself very lucky.

Any thoughts??

The blockchain driver does work with the newer OEM Vega cards but apparently those cards are using memory (hynix) that may have lower tolerances and cannot be overclocked easily. The reference cards use the samsung memory that seems to tolerate higher or more aggressive memory overclocks. Performance is better on the reference cards.

So all things considered it is likely that there will not be a driver that prioritizes random memory access read/writes for newer AMD cards (Navi) since it seems that they are not willing to make that change for Vega now in the mainline driver. Which is sad because the performance of the new GDDR6 memory would certainly be helpful for cryptonight.

Its also funny to think that we are only using these cards for their memory performance only so its a pretty expensive memory stick.
