So, starting from now, if you decided to order ready-to-use boards from some developer (or still do not know with whom to go), you can buy your chips now to ensure you get them from the first batch. Upon delivery, you negotiate with the developer of your choice and let me know where to forward the chips to for assembly.
So I have paid the 43 BTC again Wink

(At least I think that is the address, I'm not sure which one to list here since apparently it involved multiple addresses that i own, but this is the transaction http://blockexplorer.com/tx/98d430314534f001e10c84fcff19be316cc1bb811a12bdc09481e964c651ba1d)

I'm interested if I can find someone who can assemble the board for me. PM if you know a developer that do, preferably in EU.

Several users approached me with a specific concern: they do not yet know whether to go for DIY or buy boards, and if so, from whom to buy. Also some know from whom to buy, but the designers have not yet started taking orders and the first batch of chips might already be gone when they do.

I considered forth and back, and while this will load me more than it already does today, I am going to support those who buy assembled boards and manage their chip orders.

So, starting from now, if you decided to order ready-to-use boards from some developer (or still do not know with whom to go), you can buy your chips now to ensure you get them from the first batch. Upon delivery, you negotiate with the developer of your choice and let me know where to forward the chips to for assembly.

I updated the OP accordingly.

Folks,

please do me a favor and read the OP carefully before you place an order or PM me with questions that are already answered in the OP. Also, please keep in mind that this thread is only for the order of the chips. If you have questions about technical aspects or are seeking contact to people who can build the boards for you, please follow the original DIY thread.

Also please note that Avalon has posted the relevant facts already here, no need to speculate:

Quote
Product Description

the only payment accepted is Bitcoin.
the chips being sold are packaged and tested.
the lead time on the chips is 9 to 10 weeks.
made to order from TSMC foundry and then packaged and shipped.
the minimum order quantity is 10,000 chips and the maximum order quantity is 200,000.
the chips are identical to those in Avalon, clocking 282Mh/s per chip.
the password is “I understand and agree”.
communication protocol, reference board design provided in early May.
everything will be open source from FPGA to PCB design.
we do not offer technical support of any kind, this is final.
if you do not know what to do with the packaged chips, please do not purchase.

Chips have spec hashrate of 282Mh/s
And from what I've seen posted, 6.6W / 1GH, so under 2W per chip ( 1.86 ).

Chips are smaller than they look in the photos. Specs say 7mm x 7mm. That's about 1/4 inch square. Tiny little buggers.

So minimum order is 10 chips, what is the expected hash rate of 10 chips?

From what I've read, each Avalon has 240 chips. So these 240 chips are good for 60 GH's? Is it safe to assume each batch of 10 chips is good for 1/24 th of 60 GH's?

IMHO, this is the best way to do a group buy, have someone with the money and reputation front the cost and then resell...

Please note, this is entirely based on reputation, you are taking *some* risk. Be sure if you do this or a group buy you do your due diligence and research someone's OTC rating and reputation independently.

would be good if more members know how to assemble the chips to the pcb.... and where to get the pcb board?
Once a pcb design is made public I think it'll be quite easy to get them made. There's tons of places online. If no one puts a design out there and I have to do my own then I'll post mine but I'm pretty slow at this.

QFN chips are not hard to solder with only a SMD heat gun. I've done that by hand easily. The better way is to use a toaster oven or frying pan, but by hand works too. I've done 208 pin TQFP as well and would prefer it but QFN is very doable by hand. You just use flux, wet the pads with an iron, place and run a hot gun air along them. TQFP makes a small cracking sound which is cool.

PM sent ordered 20 pcs.

Any reports on bad chip or failure rate? If we order 10 are we likely to receive a bad one? Are they fully tested at the factory for function? I'm not saying this is going to be a big problem but some chips likely will be duds and how will this be handled, or what rates should be calculated into risk projections.

BTW I think I want 20 - will order soon.
