.. with Deron Williams that are having a past wrestling experience when he's young I don't think so, I mean I'm afraid on how will Deron will going to receive punches either on the two opponents.

We're curious about how these two fighters will react comes fight night, will they have sparring first so they can stage the fight right, Basketball and football are contact sports but they are not hurting sports, where you win by hurting your opponent, I wonder if we will have two chessplayers battling inside the ring in the future.  Cheesy

They surely started their training now because they need more time to learn how to be entertaining in front of the fans. As what I witnessed in the past exhibition fights, I have not yet seen a fighter that does not have experience in boxing win a fight, but since both came from other sports, then most probably it will be hard to guess who will win, but let's hope we will get a surprise that would entertain the crowd, not to bore.
Yeah right, it's tough to guess if who will win since both of them are not really into this sport, they are just doing this stuff to earn money or to earn some fame back. It needs for both fighters now to work it out and be fit for sure stamina is their big concern. Boxing is far exhausting compared with other available sports.

Not just your body but more on your mental capabilities, though it's just exhibition fight, they still need to train well to avoid any
risk with their health and make sure that their body is physically fit for this sport.

Anyway, does anybody think that the rise of celebrity boxing matches is already reaching a bothersome point?
yep, even the McGregor vs Mayweather fight bothers me(it's probably just me though). but what bothers me the most is the Mayweather vs logan fight. I mean, isn't it a little insulting to other boxers who wanter to fight Mayweather that a YouTuber who has only been into boxing recently been given a chance to fight one of the best boxers in the world. and if you watched the match you can clearly see that the two didn't even try to give a good show.
Though such opportunities were provided after hard trails and long days of practice it is unfair to provide opportunity for an YouTuber to fight against leading fight champion. Will this happen with any of the other games. These days this kind of fights were gaining attraction, but in the long people will surely think why is such a way is followed in professional fight.

Well, the main event was just an exhibition match and no wonder the other fights might be an exhibition match too. They come from different league and having them into boxing is surely not that we should see everyday. I think I found an article stating the possible match with Deron but it isn't yet official because there might be some changes that may happen.

I think this is what have been stated on the article that OP have shared in thread but knowing that these people that will going to showcase their different skill in a sports or in a ring that are different from their past career will be an exhibition match indeed. Maybe Michael Tyson will going to showcase his skill in boxing and Jake Paul too but with Deron Williams that are having a past wrestling experience when he's young I don't think so, I mean I'm afraid on how will Deron will going to receive punches either on the two opponents.

No God or Kings, only BITCOIN.
He's kinda the brawl body type one and I guess this is just an exhibition match again? Well, saw this video about a professional UFC fighter Ryan Spann and he's been beaten by Deron during a sparring with him and our guy Deron Williams has an MMA Gym named  Fortis MMA in Dallas, I think that could explain the fond of him to be on the ring. Well, it's just fun to watch how he's doing now after he retires NBA.
Probably an exhibition match to attract more viewers for the main event and this is not bad at all since its fun to watch those retired players to be on a different sports and now they are coming to Boxing for an exhibition match. Looking also at his history, probably he’s focus now is on Boxing a new found sports for him, let’s see who will be his opponent after they officially announce it.

The news came out and I'm surprised that I will see another retired NBA player fight in boxing.

FORMER NBA All-Star Deron Williams is entering the boxing ring, possibly against a fellow former pro athlete.

Williams, who played 12 seasons in the NBA, is fighting in the undercard of the Jake Paul-Tommy Fury event on Dec. 18 in Tampa, Florida.

Organizers have yet to officially announce Williams, opponent, but he is reportedly set to face former Pro BowlerFrank Gore, who played 16 seasons in the NFL.

There's already an announcement of who he will face organizers have learned from the Robinson fight, it's good that Deron is fighting a fighter that is equal to his experience, but I doubt if this is going to be a good fight but this is the kind of fight that generates money, organizers just have to make sure to explain to both fighters that this is an exhibition and they are well trained and well-conditioned, boxing gis very much different to Football and Basketball.

Anyway, does anybody think that the rise of celebrity boxing matches is already reaching a bothersome point?

Even real and professional boxers are voicing out concerns at these exhibitions and cross-matches fights since last year saying, what the hell is happening now in the boxing world wherein even out of the league, some personalities will enter the sports.

Well, it's not "even" because the "real and professional boxers" must have been the most affected or insulted by all these shallow celebrity matches. Many of them must feel nauseated with these fights made purely for money. The sad thing is that these matches are becoming bigger and bigger. Not only are they attracting a huge audience, they're making more money, hitting pay-per-views, and so on.

Good thing there are lots of real professional fights now on the lineup (like the recently Canelo Alvarez vs Caleb Plant match). If goes back again to normal, I doubt this exhibition match will still be hype regardless if the involved are famous personalities.

I certainly hope so, for the sake of the sport of boxing.

I saw this news yesterday and I think it's just for entertainment but as Deron Williams has some experience in wrestling when he was young, so he has some skills when it comes to fighting sports. he won't be ended like Nate Robinson who sleeps tight in the ring after taking one punch from Jake Paul.

The question is, he can still mimic his wrestling experience during his youth today? He is healthy and in shape during that time. Nate Robinson is a healthy NBA player when retires but still got downed easily by Jake Paul. Deron Williams retires because of injuries. I don't think he's now back in his shape. He will just be a punching bag on that event.

well, we will see that inside the ring if he's still got something under his sleeves. but that's true, we can't compare what he could do during his younger days, because his NBA stint gave a lot of trouble to his body. maybe, he's just trying another hobby for a change, and test himself.
remember, this is only an exhibition fight, so they will be banking on the idea that they have respective fans that will support this exhibition fight.

now that this information is out I am pretty sure some die-hard fans of them would likely want to watch them fight on the ring.

I really doubt it. These die-hard fans know a certain border.

Deron Williams entering boxing might not be approved in the eyes of his followers. But since the decision is already made, then just allow it to happen.

That experience is when he was young.

He can't apply that today as he already sustains lots of injuries, minor and major, during his NBA stint.

Wrestling is a combat sports but you do not get punches, if you are getting punched for the first time you will sleep and Jake Paul is a decent boxer who could do that to anyone who is literally new to the sport. If two novice boxers are in the ring then we can say that Deron Williams will have a chance but if he is against anyone who is training for a long time then he will get hit.

I loved watching Deron Wiliams. I remember when they got into the league Chris Paul and Deron Williams actually got in around the same time I believe, and people were talking about how they would be rivals and were around the same level as well and people were talking which one will be better. Deron is already out of the league for a while now and he is now trying to get into an exhibition match basically while Chris Paul was in finals last season.

So all in all this definitely seals the deal, I mean it was already decided long time ago, no idea if this changes anything but it is definitely a nail in the coffin. He was always a powerful person, but he is fighting against an NFL guy so I am sure that guy is at least as powerful or maybe more (never watched him). It will definitely be a match that will be fun to watch just for the fame level, boxing level will be absymmal for sure.

Last time I check, an ex NBA player Nate Robinson got knockout cold by Jake Paul, and now another ex NBA star trying his journey in boxing, this must be fun.
Most probably their purpose is to entertain and to have some money as well, since this is an undercard there's no assurance that they can get a full attention from the crowd though seeing an ex NBA players and a retired player, makes me think that Boxing is getting weirder now. Lots of exhibitions matches between those retired players out of boxing, this might be the trend now, there's no full retirement for them.

I'm sure that they're switching careers instead of totally retirement. It's better to have a continuous source of income in another way. I just don't think matches like this would be that exciting because, to be honest, boxing is too different from basketball. They should've focused more on their field than trying their luck here.

I am a big fan of NBA and a big fan of Deron Williams as well, so even if I don't really support exhibition fights but I will not miss the opportunity to see him fight as I've never seen him fight before, this is the first time and I expect a surprise in a positive way, like he would win the fight.

Though his opponent is not yet announced, here's the rumor now.

The Deron Williams vs. Frank Gore boxing match could be legit if it happens

The sight of an NBA player competing in the boxing ring is becoming more and more common. Nate Robinson famously got knocked out by Jake Paul. Lamar Odom fought Aaron Carter (yes, that one). Kendall Gill turned pro in boxing shortly after his retirement, and has been looking for a bout against Paul himself.

Deron Williams is the next former NBA star to enter the squared circle. The three-time All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist is going to fight as part of the undercard for Paul’s bout against Tommy Fury, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. Williams is still looking for an opponent, and Charania mentions NFL Hall of Fame-bound running back Frank Gore as a possibility.

Well, this is exciting given that he's a basketball player, I expect that he'll have a really tough skin and high endurance which are a really good base if you want to be a good fighter in the ring, only thing left for Williams to do is to learn the basics and then polish them all the way throughout so he caan have a good performance in the ring and if possible steal the show from the main event.

...this must be fun.

Or not. LOL! Boxing is not Deron William's business. Neither is it Frank Gore's. So I don't know what these two men are smoking lately but I doubt they will give real boxing fans a good show. But, well, these men have a big following that may be interested to watch their favorite athletes on the gloves inside the ring. I hope they won't be disappointed.

Anyway, does anybody think that the rise of celebrity boxing matches is already reaching a bothersome point?

I agree, sometimes you really have to think about why this players are jumping on the bandwagon of celebrity boxing matches and then gets knock out? Doesn't make any sense at all. Specially for Deron, who has a good solid career as a NBA player, but totally ruin his reputation by accepting this kind of exhibition match just for the money. It's becoming a bothersome for the sports itself.
