This can be easily avoided if people don't give merit only to those that give them vote and ignore the rest. I know that some people like to use merit as a "thank you", but IMHO in these situations it's best to avoid that practice as some will vote only to scoop couple of merits. I remember last time we had some members who were so lazy that they just copy/pasted other people's votes. [...] I am having the same issue. For now I just left some categories blank and will eventually fill them up when/if I figure out who is the most deserving. Or maybe I am taking this too seriously. Cheesy
I remember this heated discussion... so I'm of the opinion that only people who are not on my ignore list deserve ratings (in the context of how I feel when a person has spent 5-10 minutes making a conscious choice). Btw, there is nothing wrong with leaving a couple of empty graphs, to me it just means that the person has a slightly narrower range of interests than others ... after all you have a month or so to edit your post.  Wink

I saw the note, but it doesn't say anything about active account which never/almost never receive merit. But i trust you'll ignore vote from obvious abuser.

I also haven't idea about some categories and leave them blank. I guess it's more OK than nominating some random members.

I agree; while it's definitely a very good deed, it doesn't fit the description.
Also not sure it deserves the attached 'main prize' compared to someone who devoted many years to serving the community. Like, time is money as well.. Smiley And the value of time people like theymos put into this forum over many years is surely worth much more than $1000.

whether this is an award for the 2021 year, or for many years from the beginning?

I don't want to influence people's votes too much, but I was wondering how many users would nominate EZ0010 for one of the awards, and then I saw @examplens got the first vote in. I'm not entirely sure they fit in the Absolute Hero of Good's description, but out of the ones its probably the most fitting. Might be fitting to the event of the year, because it was a rare mistake from theymos that led to the event, which had a happy ending.

On another note, I might get in on the voting this year, though can I leave out some categories?

what EZ0010 has done is certainly a move worthy of attention and praise for me. Newbie, without any reputation, who received the money as a gift, still decided to return it. Maybe is not the best description, but it kind of suited me Hero of Goods for them.

I also haven't idea about some categories and leave them blank. I guess it's more OK than nominating some random members.

I need clarification, does that mean full member or higher with 0 merit eligible to vote?
True ... but I added a note saying that the OP has the discretion to ignore the votes of newly awakened accounts and inactive posters.

Well, one thing I didn't realize is what year these awards refer to. It's from 2020, right?

Has there ever been one dedicated to 2021?

Yes, the awards from OP are from 2020. So far, no awards were given for 2021, but I think this is the reason for which icopress bumped this thread today:

Bump / Well, let's get started? Who will be the anti-hero this year? since Nullius is inactive  Shocked

Perhaps a new surprise awaits us and he did not want to start a new topic, but to continue the existing one Smiley

To be honest, I haven't laughed like that for a long time...  Grin

Today I sent notifications to users who made minor mistakes in their answers, and noticed LoyceV's answer. And I decided to change my vote in favor of fahrizanmh as well. Just take a look and it will make your day.

6. Fail of the Year ............... fahrizanmh, see https://archive.is/Ce61x#selection-8797.0-8823.2

Lol. I saw it days ago but never mind to comment. Such votes are almost useless. See how it is abused but look at it another view, it is helpful to detect merit hunters, shit posters, abusers, and liars.

This vote, definition for each title or category is vague, criteria are unclear. I don't blame on such but some voters don't know what they voted for. They arbitrarily put names into any title, category and finish. Just as filling a space with names.

As I raised my opinion months ago, nowadays it is easier to earn merit. I am not jealous but I remembered how people considered and investigated deeply with post was received one or two merits. Dig to see it is abused or not, deserves merit or not.

Now, merit sprees are everywhere and no one cares.

I am very happy to see theymos did not give more smerits to merit sources.

Hang on. I will find and quote.

I edited to update with evidence for my statement that earning merits nowadays are easier for newbies than in the past (before mid of 2019).
[1] Chronological changes of top 200 merit receivers / senders since Jan 2018

As I raised my opinion months ago that after the reallocation of merit distributions to merit sources, I felt people (not only merit sources) are more easily to send sMerit away. I don't call it as abuse but there are low quality posts which should not receive merit. I also see many merit sprees for nothing.

Recent weeks, I've seen some easier merit giveaways and honestly I don't like that but in reality spammers won't be able to go up too high in ranks.

Kinda net-effects from:
  • Rising stars
  • Rising topics
  • Inactive merit sources (might be not if looking at median of merit distributions)
  • Standards of sources or members on quality are decreased.
  • Restructures for merit distributions from English boards to local boards (maybe)
  • Changes in merit exchanges back and forth between ranks. That topic is outdated but you can use it and compares with updated data from DdmrDdmr Merit dashboard. Where receivers received merits from, and meriters sents merits to

Last 2 or 3 months, my earned merit statistics have increased but I notice most of my merit came from knowledgeable and reputable users. I did not receive much merit from lower ranks and it is strange.

This is really incredible! I wonder what they thought they are meriting: the fact that they are mentioned in the contest by a Newbie, whose nominations are null?; the fact that a Newbie is breaking the contest rules? Or what are they meriting here?
Just look at this case from yesterday, Newbie copying votes from another member. Now, some might say that this was pure coincidence, that two members voted for exactly the same people in all 13 categories and I guess that could happen, but  this guy even included the two typos of the person he copied from, making it an obvious and mindless c/p. Before this he never posted outside bounty section in his bitcointalk career, but he decided to seize the opportunity.

First user Kojektea voted and while doing so, he made a few typos.

And then few hours later Newbie account appeared with exactly the same votes, including the typos which I put in bold. Mission accomplished, he got what he came for.

Here is my vote for Bitcointalk Community Awards.

And again: it would be awesome if all users would read the OP before posting...

       Rules:
  • You must be a Full Member or higher to nominate / vote.

And again:

1. Best Moderator ................. hilariousandco, OmegaStarScream

This Newbie being also merited by some members which I would have expected to read the rules: CryptopreneurBrainboss and LFC_Bitcoin...

This is really incredible! I wonder what they thought they are meriting: the fact that they are mentioned in the contest by a Newbie, whose nominations are null?; the fact that a Newbie is breaking the contest rules? Or what are they meriting here?
