No doubt about it that bitcoin have a very good future but it doesn't mean that altcoins have no future, altcoins like Ethereum, ICN, Aeternity, VSL etc have a bright future. we will see ethereum will be the first currency after bitcoin.

I am having a discussion on the mechanics of a coin called AIRcoin, here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.19937375

It failed for various reasons, but is being rebuilt w/ the originally promised features in the first test run.  Did you like the premise of the coin?  What about it struck/strikes you as odd? Would like to speak to speculators, investors, miners, and everyone else interested about this.

If bitcoin solves its transactions fee and time problems then for no doubt it will be #1. But this does not mean that most of the alts are useless. Many of them are 90-98% of them probably depending on who you ask, but some definitely have functionality that can help this world moving forward. Unless bitcoin adds a lot of features to it coins that can help us are

cloud based coins: storj, sia, maid

digital identity: civic

private transactions: monero, zcash, pivx, and many others

blockchain protection : qrl

decentralized exchanges: waves, bitshares

The list goes on but not by much. So as you can see there are several altcoins IMHO that have a future if they are not abandoned and community stays there. But will they be around in 5 years from now? I truly believe so, but whether it will those coins above or newer coins nobody has heard of yet that much I am not sure about.

In the current state of affairs two things are required for alts to be able to survive long term
1.      Technological edge over Bitcoin
2.      Intensive media coverage / successful marketing

I believe Bitcoin has a future in long term. It proved itself in the past years and it is getting widely popular. It just has a transaction fee problem atm.

What about the altcoins? Who does use them for real? Will people use them in the future for real purpose?

I only have a hope for ethereum and litecoin, but not for the rest. I am not even sure for eth and ltc.

If bitcoin solves the reansaction fee and time problem, I doubt eth and ltc even have a future.
ETH and other alt coin still has a future because some of them has stand the test of time considering the number of years that they have been in existence and for them to have still be surviving up till this day is a signifying effect to that as well. Although, quite a number might not stand that long but in the case of ETH and BTC, they are running two parallel lines that I don't see one standing as a threat against the other

@OP
I think you mean BTC has scaling issues.
And by future i have to assume you mean a "good" one.

Altcoins are scammy garbage.. history has shown us what their "Future" is like.
I have been here for years watching you all act like shills for every coin that comes along..
..then later you forget about it dump and abandon it.

Altcoins really a future, though hopes are not too high.
In short term they will give you good returns, even better than bitcoins. But in long term there would be two things;
1. Bitcoin will outperform all the altcoins.
2. 99% of the altcoins will become worthless and die due to lack of support or developer abandoning the project.

I think altcoins that focus on anonymity will likely have more chance to survive.
Also, I disagree with your "99% of the altcoins will become worthless"

I do agree lot's of altcoins are worthless, yet, now there are more and more real teams (of several people) or even foundations that can work together to provide good altcoins with real use-cases.
I would rather say that 90% of altcoins are worthless.

Saying bitcoin will be the one and only coin is just utterly stupid. There is plenty of altcoins and there are plenty to come that will make bitcoin look like horseshit.

Bitcoin have big future for me but dont depends always in bitcoin because we dont know if bitcoin will live long or will die. Or if bitcoin decrease price or increase. Ethereum coin and litecoin is one my favorite altcoin because this two have big potential to increase in the future . Like ethereum I believe if bitcoin die that coin is the next king crypto currency. So its better if you buy ethereum and litecoin

It's good to try altcoins since they are usually used in ico's and they have a lot of futures and developments made. There's just no need to put all your savings on ot. But try it,it might be a more opportunity  for your earnings .
that's right mate just invest portion of your bitcoin and start to study how the market works, I know alts has been made to work together with bitcoin and some of those alts will get attention coming from businesses and the one that will make it properly will win and become another crypto currency.

Of course altcoins have future same as bitcoin since altcoins can stand alone without bitcoin. Also, becsuse many investors are placing their investment in cryptot currency, there is  very small probability that altcoin could die in the future.

That's what I'm talking about. Altcoins are not for real purpose, they are just for placing invesment in hope that some day they can replace bitcoin somehow. If bitcoin solves its problems and acquire a wider recognition, why would any investor invest in altcoins if noone use the for a real usage.

The OP was talking about bitcoin solving its problems. But how it is possible? If btc gets segwit implemented the transactions will proceed even slower! As for the price... I guess it reduced in btc every time halving occurs but the price of bitcoin in USD is growing faster, so the problem stays. Right now most of alts aren't used and are just kept for better times, it's true. However, ltc, eth and dogecoin are used, so it's not that easy. I believe altcoins have future, because there can't be some one dominant thing in our world.

...history has shown us what their "Future" is like...

that is true and mostly why I doubt altcoins has a future. bitcoin was the only one proved itself.

look at the prices of 3 years back below, most of them are trash now

1. I'm not sure I agree about Bitcoin. That's a good guess but still a guess...
2. It's quite similar to the situation in 99'. Most companies died but Google, Amazon and some more came out of it

very, very few. bitcoin has what no other alt has.

the tech is moving so fast that better put together projects will come out than what are around now.

there will also be the realisation at some point that most alts are solutions to problems that don't exist, not that anyone was ever interested in actually using them of course.
