Some altcoins have future, others don't have.
These coins which have unique features or advantages against bitcoin, professional devs team and other important things, these coins have future.
Ofcourse, we don't talk about majority of ICO coins. These coins are mainly created to get investments without thinking about future of coin. And I'm not really sure that ICO markets wil exist after some years.
Coins like Ethereum, Litecoin, Dash and Monero is the main whales, but if we compare it with bitcoin, in general, we can't use these coins in our real life, for example to purchase something. This is one of the main things why we can be sceptical about future of altcoins.

I believe Bitcoin has a future in long term. It proved itself in the past years and it is getting widely popular. It just has a transaction fee problem atm.

What about the altcoins? Who does use them for real? Will people use them in the future for real purpose?

I only have a hope for ethereum and litecoin, but not for the rest. I am not even sure for eth and ltc.

If bitcoin solves the reansaction fee and time problem, I doubt eth and ltc even have a future.
Just the time will tell use about the future of altcoin, All of them still under the development that takes the more time to prove the worth of the ico project itself. Even the bitcoin solve the actual problem such as the scaling problem of bitcoin. that will not grab away the demand for ethereum. But litecoin will be useless as far as I know. The ethereum with its smart contract and litecooin just copy of bitcoin itself.

i do think cypto will be the future. Just not the near future. New coins are being and will be developed. There are a few problems that prevent mass adoption.

The first is transaction time. For instance, when you go purchase daily items ( gas, food, cloths, ect) you most likely pay with a credit or debit card. The transaction is verified almost instantly. Until we have a coin that has the quality mass adoption is not even possible. No one is going to wait 30 minutes for their credit or debit card payment to clear. We do have bitpay which is accepted at several stores. Subway and dunkin donuts probably being the best know. That is a giant leap forward. However, the transaction tax for small amounts like 5 usd for coffee makes this an expensive alternative.

The second problem is government taxation. Especially here in the US. Our government will never permit a payment method they can not verify and tax. I know that is the point of cypto and bitcoin in general. Retailers are responsible to add tax at time of sale. Since the government does not accept bitcoin or any alt coin that is not possible. The only reason retailers can use and accept bitpay is that bitpay accepts the bitcoin but pays the retailer in fiat. Usually usd. Major corporations are not going to risk expensive legal trouble in an attempt to help you avoid paying sales tax.

The 3rd major issue is unification. The only coin that has a chance at becoming a true form of payment is bitcoin. No other coin is even accepted at retail locations.AFAIK. With all the altcoins causing diversification that only worsens the problem. You do not see the retailers that accept bitpay running out to try and accept ether. Nor will they. You do not see bitpay expanding to accept ether either. There would be no advantage for them to do so.

Price flucuations are another major issue. Pumper and dumpers cause a huge risk to any retailer that would consider accepting cypto. Fiat does fluctuate in value. Very slightly compared to cypto. A retailer is not going to accept a payment method which may lose 10% or more in value overnight.
For now there is decent money in mining and trading. The only safe investment is in bitcoin. Any other cypto is purely a gamble. You do not truly know if there is another hidden premne and someone is just waiting to dump.

Altcoins really a future, though hopes are not too high.
In short term they will give you good returns, even better than bitcoins. But in long term there would be two things;
1. Bitcoin will outperform all the altcoins.
2. 99% of the altcoins will become worthless and die due to lack of support or developer abandoning the project.

This pretty much, Bitcoin will be the defacto 'gold' for a long time to come with the majority of altcoins popping up and going. I believe some of them will stay strong.

Not all of them have a future. There are lots of (shit)coins that really don't have any good future. I have seen that some coins had the same staff but different nicknames different strategy but ended that they had only one goal, to get rich by ICO participant and then dump the price until they sell all the coins, and that's why we see some coins in exchanges that worth few satoshi or less.

I'm not sure either about litecoin but ethereum will be used for trading and crowdfunding purposes I guess.
How about other altcoins which has high price such as gigabyte, gnosis and zcash? As long as people still use it for trading, then altcoins will be always around, even though bitcoin could find scalable solution and used as a currency.
Some altcoins worth more than current price obviously, only time will tell if a coin could reach $1000 save point.

Agree bitcoin is for the long term basis of coin it will not stop reaching it's Top. Altcoins has a future too specially i believe in ethereum it has many potential characters that it will grow year by year. Another coins that has potential it self is Litecoin specially that it acquires the segwit now. Dashcoin is been there for many years and still growing and growing the coin that has been there for a long time will not be dead.

The same question was asked when bitcoin was new. We now know the answer to that. The same can be said about altcoins. But not all alt-coins will have the same future as bitcoin. If it is just a copy paste of bitcoins code, then it will be trash. If it does not offer something new or any added value, it will be trash. But if it has a unique characteristic that can be valuable, then I say that coin have a future.

There's no reason to believe that there will only be one coin in the future. But coins have to show real usage and value to survive. Ethereum, Civic, Zcash and Monero have that. Probably also Iota.

I think in short term every thing is possible as we experienced high increase in prices of most of major altcoins such as Ethereum. But in long term everything depends on what will happen to Bitcoin.
In my opinion in future we will have only one acceptable cryptocurrency. If Bitcoin can solve its problems like high transaction fees that you mentioned, It will be that cryptocurrency. If not we should wait for another cryptocurrecncy that will replace Bitcoin.
We should also consider another important issue which is governments decisions. In future after accepting bitcoins by entire world, Governments would like to have more control on the system. We should wait for their decision whether they want bitcoin to be that major cryptocurrency or not.

thanks for the great answer. I think esactly the same.

One acceptable cryptocurrency is the future. And government pressure into that coin is the thing to discuss in the future.

But if governments try to control that system, alternative coins will survive in order to eliminate the pressure..

Clearly, you do not realize we have bitcoin because we do not want the governement to tell us what we can or cannot do. Unless they stop all internet, they cannot stop us. If needed we can expand zcash/zerocoin and ignore their dictate.

There will be many blockchains in the future.

Having everything on one blockchain is not logical.

So bitcoin will exist, eth will exist, etc will exist, many more will exist.

Literally, you can have thousands private blockchains at the end.

Why? Specialization and economies of scale balance each other. Commoditized processes need scale, injovation and niche needs specialization.

Dcorp/iconomi/zencash/aeternity/wagerr/gnosis/sia/golem/crown etc. alm have a reason to exist.

Bitcoin have future thats for sure. I do believe that there will be some alts standing still not just LTC and ETH but these as well: DASH, DOGE, XMR, ZCASH

There will be more of them. But the point is and will stay prob most of the alts will exist in the future for the people to gamble upon, to create fake value. We all know that most of them were made for profit and nothing else.
