Why all this stuff? Because Putin needs to hold his power in his arms. The problem is, that brainwash of Russians was done so great, that I don't see he has got a way back 
. And he will go as far as other countries will let him go. Putin is playing very rough poker game. He knows that nobody of Western countries wants war and everybody is afraid of nuclear weapons. He is gathering his army forces around Ukraine. Putin doesn't care the people of Donetsk or Lugansk. He plays his local and geopolitical games.
