Latvia defense minister accuses Russia of destabilizing through “professional provocateurs”

Latvia’s defence minister said on Friday Russia was trying to stir unrest in the Baltic state by using “specially-trained, professional provocateurs” in the wake of its intervention in Ukraine. … “There are risks that Russia might try to destabilise the situation in the region,” Raimonds Vejonis, Latvia’s defence minister, told Reuters in an interview.

latvian good remember ruSSian crimes in Latvia >

The Soviet occupation culminated on 14 June, 1941 when a mass deportation of civilians from Latvia to distant areas of the Soviet Union took place.  A total of 15,424 persons, according to latest figures, were arrested and sent away in boxcars unsuited for human transportation.  Among those deported were minor children and babies, most of whom died on the way or from cold or malnutrition in their settlement areas in Siberia.  Many civilians were brutally executed in Riga and many other places after the beginning of the war between Germany and Soviet Union, 22 June 1941, as the Red Army retreated in disarray.

These crimes against citizens of independent Latvia included arbitrary arrest and imprisonment, execution, deportation to the so-called Gulag camps or banishment for life in distant areas of the Soviet Union.  These actions were carried out without a proper court procedure, oftentimes without a proper arrest warrant.  Most of the charges were based on Soviet laws and applied retroactively—for alleged transgressions while serving in institutions of the independent Latvian state.  They completely ignored international conventions and laws.

“The unfounded claims of Pentagon officials on the alleged ‘breaching of airspace of Ukraine by Russian fighter jets’ appears to have been based on rumors and speculation,” a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman told Itar-Tass on Saturday.

“Those media allegations are populist in nature, they contain no information on the time and place of the incident, as well as no data on altitude, speed and the direction of aircraft, as well as no other objective parameters,” the spokesman said.

“Four [Russian] transport airplanes Il-76 were flying along our state border but they did not cross the borderline,” Koval was quoted as saying by Interfax-Ukraine.

Putin stops talks with White House:

Since the invasion of Crimea, President Vladimir Putin and President Barack Obama have had regular phone calls in an often half-hearted attempt to deescalate the ongoing crisis inside Ukraine. But as the U.S. and EU prepare to unveil new sanctions against Russia, Putin has decided the interactions should stop. The Kremlin has ended high-level contact with the Obama administration, according to diplomatic officials and sources close to the Russian leadership. The move signals an end to the diplomacy, for now.

“Putin will not talk to Obama under pressure,” said Igor Yurgens, Chairman of the Institute for Contemporary Development, a prominent Moscow think tank, and a close associate of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. “It does not mean forever.”

"Kerry has many times mentioned that Ukrainian intelligence captured Russian agents,” Lavrov said. “So, show them to the people, have them on TV. Kerry says they don’t want to disclose the identities of those people who are engaged in the captures. This is not serious.”

Quote
“Representatives of the US State Department, Victoria Nuland in particular, claim that in Geneva we agreed upon ‘separatists’ leaving the occupied buildings,” Lavrov said. “This is a lie, this could not have been written, because we were promoting the approach that ensures the simultaneity of processes and equal responsibilities of the sides when it comes to vacating illegally occupied buildings and disarming illegal groups.”

And this quite frank quote:
Quote
“If you think that when John Kerry, William Hague or Laurent Fabius call me, they speak differently in those personal contacts and say something you don’t know from their public speeches, you are mistaken,” Lavrov said, adding that he was still making attempts to have a real constructive dialogue with the officials he mentioned.

M/S Meeting of CIS countries is Moscow
C/U Emblem of Commonwealth of Independent States countries (CIS)
SOT, Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Minister of Russia (in Russian): "Once again the US is exhibiting its ability to attribute all the blame to someone else while deploying all their might to pervert everything that's going on in Ukraine. They accuse us of turning on what John Kerry called in his prosecutor's voice, 'Putin's propaganda machine called Russia Today' - and that is totally unacceptable. Such remarks about the media are uncivilized. But I can understand why he said it now that CNN and the BBC and other Western media outlets now have a serious competitor in Russia Today something they did not think would ever emerge. Russia Today has won a vast audience in the United States, the UK, and in Western Europe, and that's without mentioning Latin America, the Arab world and other regions. We will be actively supporting this alternative point of view to western propaganda as the demand becomes greater in the rest of the world, including in western society."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said US Secretary of State John Kerry's barbed rebuke of the RT network was an unacceptable branding of a serious competitor to Western media outlets in Moscow, Friday.

His statements came on the sidelines of a meeting of young diplomats from the Commonwealth of Independent States countries (CIS) in the Russian capital.

US Secretary of State John Kerry criticized RT for its coverage of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine on Thursday, calling it a "Putin propaganda bullhorn."
