USA has a horrible team this year compared to what they used to have but these are still elite NBA players so most likely they will destroy whoever they go against, however it will not be like Angola-USA 60 point game type of situation anymore, it would be more like they are beating them by 10 points on average type of situation. More exhibition matches would have show us more info but the games about to start in 10 days or so, we can still wait.

Jayson Tatum, Kyle Kuzma, Jaylen Brown, Donovan Mitchell, Kemba Walker and some notable players who are currently at their prime and you called TEAM USA as a horrible team? Comparing it to their previous squad doesn't make any sense since obviously there are big differences.

Still, their lineup is deadly. Maybe the term you used is not appropriate.

~snipped~
That will be a waste run for Nigeria if a simple budget can't be fixed. They have an allocation for that, the problem is the release. Problems like that do really happened in another country as well but why just now when the tournament is just a few weeks to go before the tip-off.

They are undefeated in the qualifiers and might have a chance to advance to their bracket as I believed they can handle, at least, Russia, Argentina, and Korea.
I haven't followed the team but I feel that the team really is going to miss a big thing. This isn't just about the games that they have but it's about the pride of their country and the potential of their team.

I don't know about their officials or those people who's working with the sports commission on Nigeria. They should give consideration and process it as soon as possible before the proper date.

They successfully dominated their qualifying rounds, undefeated. So it's really a waste if these budget thing will not solve.

And just an update that their national team will now be able to play at the upcoming world cup. Smiley

What else is new? Team USA will just dominate this again. Giannis with the Bucks can't win the championship in the NBA. And his team mates in Greece won't be better than the Bucks. Unless USA won't have their top 5 players on board. KD and Klay are injured. Curry won't probably play. Leonard, PG and Irving will be busy creating chemistry with their new teams.   Cheesy

Greece may not have a big chance but we are talking about the national team that has the latest MVP of NBA, lets not put that aside, if the teams go head to head or even close for long enough then Giannis may just go berzerk and finish the game for his team, I am not saying it will happen but having a player like that would make any team have a slight chance of going all the way.

USA has a horrible team this year compared to what they used to have but these are still elite NBA players so most likely they will destroy whoever they go against, however it will not be like Angola-USA 60 point game type of situation anymore, it would be more like they are beating them by 10 points on average type of situation. If you believe that Greece will win because of Giannis, I don't think he will be able to lead his team to win.
He was only an MVP because the play in regular season is different in the Finals, and this FIBA is like the Finals so I believe every team that might possibly face Giannis team have already scouted their best player and like what the Raptors did, if they can stop Giannis, they'll surely win.

You are right man - of course he has the class to find ways, of course Greece needs to take better advantage of him than they did vs Serbia for example - and I am sure they will figure this out - still, the style of play is different than in NBA and if opponents defend him like raptors (and Serbia did), he will have to pass the ball many times, which is not a problem usually - with Greece it is though... we dont have shooters...

That is true, Giannis will be focus of the defense,  but in order to capitalise that, and as you said you need quality shooters. In the last friendly  game against Serbia, unfortunately that aspect didn't look good. If  i remember correctly, Fotsis was an excellent 3 pts shooter, isn't he still active?

He retired long ago - man, remember the good old times when we had Fotsis, Spanoulis, Diamantidis, Papaloukas all in one team - what a crazy lineup

OMG i just checked him, seems like he is playing for my neighbourhood local team, Ilysiakos,  club where he started his career.Another interesting fact, recently injured Ioannis Athinaiou also started his career there. They currently play in 4th division, i will definitely check them out as they play their games literally few hundred meters away from my apartment in Ilisia  Cheesy. That's why my wife told me that he met him many times in the neighbourhood., but somehow i missed him in the last few years since i live in Athens.

Hahaha, now thats great Cheesy Where are you from originally mate and how you like it in Athens? Kinda off-topic yeah but okay...

Greece has some good players as well in their team.
It is doubtful that Giannis is by far the best player in the World Cup and he can win a lot of matches by himself for Greece.
On the long term as the fatigue intensifies, he would be able to beat stronger teams. I expect Greece to climb high on the ladder.

Unfortunately - as much as I love Giannis - he is not the player who decides games in crunch time - of course it happens but vs Toronto we all saw that Leonard was the man who decided the series, he made the big shots.

Good news about Nigeria national team - they will travel to China, funds has been secured by their basketball fedaration:
https://www.eurohoops.net/en/fibawc/921384/nigeria-left-for-china/

Lithuania is set kinda low, I think that they could win a medal, unless they meet United States and Serbia in the 1/4. I think that they have some chances against Greece and Spain, they wouldn't be favorites though.
Well, we are never listed as favorites, but last time in World Cup we finished 4rth, back in 2010 3rd, what is not bad achievement. This year we played 2 friendly matches with Serbia and lost both times just in the last seconds. We have 2 NBA players Valanciunas and Sabonis, some solid Euroleague players. But one of the main problems that we don't have solid backup center. If JV and Sabonis will have fouls problem, we simply don't have replacement for them.

Tats possible that Greece is scouted by other team's but they sure will make an adjustment for it. In my point of view, yes Greece will not win this FIBA championship as what you have said because there are other super teams that are more deadly than them. Spain and USA are my favorite to win this prestigious tournament.
We saw the recent game between the Spain and the US, and that pretty tells that the USA team is the better team as they won against the Spain which is a good team as well. Spain is rank number 4 in the list of favorites to win in this competition while USA ranked no. 1 and the only team that has - odds, the rest are + odds.

Here are the list of betting odds for each team. (top 3 , USA    -240 / Serbia +350 / Greece +1000)

What? this is a devastating moment. It's pride of their country and every country that's able to get in should participate.

This is bad, I hope that the FIBA management will step in and help them.

Sadly, this is not the first team Nigerian teams have issues like that , either due not enough money, or refusing to participate due missing  bonuses and stuff . It happened few times in football too, during World Cup and and Confederations cup.And it is a shame, for such a big and populous country.I am sure that they would be powerhouse in any sport if they are a bit more organised and set.

I guess they have some serious issues with corruption, and situation is not improving much despite the fact that  Nigeria is the 12th largest producer of petroleum in the world and the 8th largest exporter, so money shouldn't be problem. But obviously someone is taking the money instead those that actually deserved it.

Less than 2 weeks left until World Cup, and there is risk in the air that Nigeria might not participate in it. Simply because they don't have money to travel to China. Ridiculous...
https://sportando.basketball/en/nigeria-participation-to-the-world-cup-at-risk-over-lack-of-funds/

I have read that Nigeria has many corrupt politicians but this is just too embarrassing for whoever is involved with the ministry of sports. I hope that there was some miscommunication somewhere and that the Nigerian basketball team gets their due funds.

Now imagine Giannis decided to play for Nigeria and his team wouldnt be able to participate due to financial problems... omg

That doesn't make sense. Even with Giannis, I don't think that Nigeria has a very good chance of qualifying for the second round. Last time I checked the betting odds, Nigeria wasn't even there in the top-20. So sticking with Greece is better for his career, IMO. On top of that, Nigeria is placed in a strong group along with teams such as Russia and Argentina.

BTW, although he was born to Nigerian parents, he has almost zero connections to that country now. So it will be morally unacceptable for him to represent them. He was born in Athens, and he was baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church. I am not sure whether he has ever visited Nigeria. If he doesn't feel patriotic about Nigeria, what is the point in representing that country in the world cup?
