A few days ago Giannis said that he would happily trade in his mvp award in exchange for the world cup title with Greece - this guy is just great!
That's because a real star values championship than his individual award, it's more fulfilling if your team won  the tournament compared to winning an MVP but you can take your team even in the Championship. I think he still felt the pain when the Bucks loss against the Raptors in the playoffs because they are the team that is expected to win since they are the favorites.

Nigerians currently ranked 33 in the world and there are 32 teams in the world cup, it is very likely that most of the other teams are ranked above them making us underdogs and relieving us from some pressure.
It's good to compete, but I'm hopeful that we not just play but impress and show a good account of the nation and continent.
Nigeria is probably most powerful team from Africa and this year they will have all their best players like Al-Farouq Aminu, Shane Lawal, Ike Diogu and others. Nigeria are in difficult group with Argentina and Russia, but I think it's possible for them to reach next round.

It seems that Serbia lost Teodosic,  their main player, for this world cup.
They felt that they even have chance to beat american national Team but now their chances are no so big.

Did he get injured in a friendly match? I thought that Serbia would win the title but without Teodosic this is going to be difficult.
I see that Greece and Giannis play good basketball. Seems like he is going to be the MVP of worldcup as he did in NBA.
Even without Teodosic, their roster is still very powerful with NBA stars Jokic, Bogdanovic, great players from Euroleague. Though Jokic is obviously isn't in best condition now - he has way too much weight.
Naida_BR, he got injury during friendly match against Lithuania, but actually it's old feet injury which forced him to miss half NBA season.

Even with the depleted line-up sure the USA will still win the FIBA championship. But the one I see has the great chance to give the best fight are the teams of Argentina, Greece, Spain and the host China. I think without those NBA superstars playing for USA they are still the favorite team to win it all.
Yeah, they are still favorites, but it's probably weakest US national team in last 10-15 years. They aren't unbeatable. Even bokmakers changed odds for US win from 1.1 to 1.4.

We can't be sure if Team USA will win the crown this year as this year is represented by not so experienced players though they still are stars in the NBA. It's always been a team from Europe particularly Serbia and Lithuania who are a treat for the crown. This year Serbia and Greece are the team to watch if they can upset the team from the USA.

I have noticed we dont have a thread regarding the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup and thought we should change that!

This is going to be the 18. basketball world cup with 32 participants. It is going to take place in China from 31/8/2019 till 15/9/2019 and we will have a total of 96 matches to enjoy.

Personally I cant wait for it to start. Firstly because I have high hopes in my country Greece this time (yeah, Giannis along with his two brothers will start)! Cheesy Secondly because I love basketball in general and this time many nations seem to take part with many of their NBA star players. Last but not least: There will be some great opportunities bettingwise! Smiley

Qualified teams are:

 Angola
 Ivory Coast
 Nigeria
 Senegal
 Tunisia

 Australia
 China (host)
 Iran
 Japan
 Jordan
 New Zealand
 Philippines
 South Korea

 Czech Republic
 France
 Germany
 Greece
 Italy
 Lithuania
 Montenegro
 Poland
 Russia
 Serbia
 Spain
 Turkey

 Argentina
 Brazil
 Canada
 Dominican Republic
 Puerto Rico
 United States
 Venezuela

Even though I think Greece shall play a good role this time, I dont think they will win the trophy... Wink Do you believe anyone could upset the USA this time?

Even with the depleted line-up sure the USA will still win the FIBA championship. But the one I see has the great chance to give the best fight are the teams of Argentina, Greece, Spain and the host China. Looking forward for this game.I know that American basketball team is so strong but I still believe in my country. They are strong also hope to win in coming FIBA world cup basketball.Go for the Philippines!!
The Philippine National Team will be having a hard time beating anybody even in the first round bro. We are just happy that we are qualified in the FIBA World Cup this year and even that qualification process was a topsy turvy ride for the Philippines. I am not trying to be pessimistic here but we got to lower our expectation with our Gilas.

Being part of this round already an achievement for the Team Gilas,  maybe we are still in the under dog position and hard for the National team to step up to the next round but all in all we should all be proud, the team will be represented not that solid and well known stars but those who have the guts to take part and try to achieve whatever the team will gain from this competition.
I'm afraid they won't be able to perform well because some of their players now are still playing the PBA which might reach to 7 games.
They need to build some chemistry and it's hard to do that in just a short period of time.

Although they have less chance to win but it's good see them to at least compete and show to the world that they should not be underestimated.

What is going on with American national basketball team?
A lot of players have given up from playing for the national team at the World Championships.
Anthony Davis, CJ McCollum, James Harden, Eric Gordon, Tobias Harris, Bradley Beal, Damian Lillard, DeMar DeRozan, Kevin Love and recently Paul Millsap.
It seems that Kyle Lowry is also very close to give up, according to some rumors.
I think that this time Serbia really have good chance to beat USA, what do you think?

NBA is becoming more and more politics every year. And there's no solid reason for any of the NBA stars refusing to play for the national team. Though all of them have some alibi, it's definitely their choice rather than the situation.
As of the winning team, I still don't think USA has any tough competitor for this tournament. With the current double league, only the best teams would reach the Quarters.

Looks like you're right.
Americans will probably need to have several shocking defeats again, like ten years ago, to become serious again and to start sending the strongest teams to world competitions again.
I agree, their national team is still the best but other national teams now have more possibility and chances to beat them, specially Serbia.

National basketball team and World Cup isn't big thing in USA and their stars don't feel duty to play for the national team. Many of these players just want to rest or prepare better for upcoming NBA season. Also, they are probably afraid to get injury while playing for the national team. But I expect that next year in the Olympics we will see most of their stars playing.
It was a big deal for them before when they were losing but since winning World Cup consecutively, the hunger and pride to represent have died down a bit. They may be taking this tournament for granted also. I hope a European team beats them this time.

It's not going to happen soon. There is no signs that basketball level in India may improve soon and Pakistan don't even have national team. For me it's a bit strange that country with such huge population like India don't have decent basketball and football teams.

I think both countries focus on cricket and ignoring the supports like football and basketball. They have internal tournaments like PSL & IPL but I think it's time that these nation's focus on other games also .

Just like in a Fifa world cup, all the continents are represented, same is the case with basketball world cup. Maybe in future India and Pakistan will represent in the FIBA . It is the famous sports but it is not so popular in Sub-continent.

Basketball is not that unheard of in India and Pakistan. In India we have a franchise based basketball league, which is quite popular among the fans. But the real reason is that the Indians are not athletic enough to compete with players from the United States and Russia. Average height in India for males is 165 cm, which is 11cm lower than the case in the US.

One of the options is to import some second tier players from countries such as US and get them naturalized as Indian citizens. But I don't prefer that route.
In other words, asian are not that competitive in basketball, even China which they have tall players but they are not athletic enough unlike the Americans.
However, it's still nice to see them compete with better teams in the FIBA, we can only support our team here but we understand their chances.

USA is a super team so it's a gold for them again. Having 1 or 2 NBA player in one team makes them strong then how about a team consist of NBA player and superstar.

As for my PH team, I fully support them wether they go to 2nd round or not. Their bracket is tough and still long way to go in beating those opponents.

What about the china who is the host country for this world cup ?  Although china never won the FIBA worldcup before but it would be interesting to see their performance in this WC. They are in group A with Cote d'Ivoire, Poland and Venezuela in their pool.

According to the odds, China will advance to the 2nd round and their fate depends on who will be their opponent in the next round but i think they would not make it to the semi-final round. I saw them play in the NBA summer league, their roster is not that good.

You are right in near one decade its not going to happen because these countries missing many things even they have not basic set up for many games even they can manage but mostly media and money is going with only Cricket so this sport has very few chances of growing here in this area we can expect from other Asian countries because they are doing some big investments and they have all things which can help them for coming forward.

So here is the group for the first round:

  • GROUP B
    Russia
    Argentina
    Korea
    Nigeria

Nigeria avoided some of the major European teams, I was keeping not being paired with USA or Spain at this stage. No team is a pushover and the games would still be very tough, however if we do grow into the tournament we could build momentum for a solid run and make good accounts of ourselves.

I am rooting for our home country to go past the first round  Cheesy
USA can still win this but if not, then it will be one of the top European teams.

The first thing I have noticed is the incredible diversity among the teams. There are a total of 32 participants and all the (inhabited) continents are adequately represented. The only missing super-power is Great Britain. My country (India) also failed to qualify, but that was expected. Another thing I have noticed is that the vast majority of the teams have fielded native players, with only a very few including naturalized players (one exception is Italy).

Just like in a Fifa world cup, all the continents are represented, same is the case with basketball world cup. Maybe in future India and Pakistan will represent in the FIBA . It is the famous sports but it is not so popular in Sub-continent.
