This was very informative. I've been reading around trying to understand the rank system and this was comprehensive.
I'm a bit confused about why the system is so restrictive...

I haven't sold nor participated in anything on this site since the merit system was released. Look at my history.
Let's see (merit system was implemented on Jan, 24, 2018):

EDIT: You probably don't think it's hard because you were already the highest rank when the merit system was released so people like to merit your posts a lot more I'm guessing.
Rank has nothing to do with what other users see as a high quality (merit worthy) post.

People rarely merit actual high quality posts.
That's subjective.

Everyone that is Jr. Member + should get 1 sMerit per day and they cap at 60.
So they can send those to their alt accounts? No, thanks.

Otherwise you send an sMerit at a low rank and then never get one.
You shouldn't expect anything in return.

That is a very bad system.
Don't blame the system, look at yourself:

After the implementation of "merit system", you made 35 posts:
  • 11 posts on "Invites & Accounts"
  • 5 posts on "Marketplace (Altcoins)"
  • 4 posts on "Off-topic"
  • 2 posts on "Services"
  • And the remaining posts, are mostly complaints...

Don't expect to receive merits for every single post that you make (especially on those boards).
- On a side note: What's high quality about this "old post" that you merited?

All the posts I've made since the implementation have gained me no benefit. The sales threads never received buyers, I actually had to go to a different site to sell them. Also, the posts you listed come to a total of 22 posts. 22 posts spread out since January (apart from the others complaining about this merit system). Also, when I said this "Otherwise you send an sMerit at a low rank and then never get one.", I didn't mean that you should get a merit in return after sending someone a merit. I meant there needs to be a way to gain sMerit that way people can actually send Merit instead of sitting here at the same rank. If you started a brand new account right now on BTCTalk I can almost bet anything that you would not receive Full Member within a 1 year time period. The only reason this forum appealed to a lot of people was it was simple. You post, your rank goes up. Now that this system is in place nobody sees a point in posting. Maybe you old users still have a reason because you guys already have all the Merit you will ever need and it was handed to you for free. You guys didn't have to earn it at all. So don't tell people to "act like the site doesn't have a Merit system." Because you guys didn't have to earn shit.

This whole merit system is so fkin' stupid. Goes from 10 merit to rank up to 100.
From brand new to full member you need to wait to have +120 activity = 9 periods = 4 months and a half.
1 Merit per day shouldn't be that difficult for someone having the time to interact with others in the forum but most of users pass their time in ANN topics...

Good thing I don't ever use this site anymore.
"ever", ok.

Keep telling yourself that ^.

Also, I really do never use this site. I haven't sold nor participated in anything on this site since the merit system was released. Look at my history. There are numerous members complaining about the system because it is almost impossible to rank up.

EDIT: You probably don't think it's hard because you were already the highest rank when the merit system was released so people like to merit your posts a lot more I'm guessing. People rarely merit actual high quality posts. Friends and associates usually merit themselves back and forth and gaining sMerit is nearly impossible too. Everyone that is Jr. Member + should get 1 sMerit per day and they cap at 60. Otherwise you send an sMerit at a low rank and then never get one. I've sent out Merit every single time I receive it and I've only received sMerit twice to send out. That is a very bad system.

Thank you for this post.
So far I never received any merit Sad

You will likely not find any merit source visiting frequently the altcoins sections and for sure not the ANN threads.
If you want to get merit then you better change your view about the forum and visit other sections.

Just wondering how come I'm not a "Full Member" yet? - Based on the activity requirement I've already exceeded that.

Try reading the very start of the OP of this thread.

Ranks

Update on 2/3/18: Merit points are now added
In addition to the activity points, merit points (click for more information) are required to advance your ranking.

You're a long way off from meeting the Merit requirement.

Ahhh!  Bingo...I didn't see that part of the OP. Not sure how I missed that.

Thanks for the clearing that up, much appreciated.

What threads do you recommend for me? I'd like to contribute to a thread that people consider to be worthy of "Merit".

You can start by taking a look at Merit statistics here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats. Check out the top-merited posts, topics and users to get a feel of where Merit is distributed the most.

I've been posting 15+ constructive posts each week. Answering questions, giving insights and trying to be helpful. I've yet received 2 Merit in total  Huh

Don't know if the Merit system is really working..

This one isn't going to get any Merit because it's off-topic in this thread. The last page of your post history are nearly all in altcoin ANN threads. Nobody reads those spamfests.

Is there a way to know how many periods my account has been active in/how much "potential activity" I have?

Yes, check the spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12saLhlUoqIdairxzuSPu6EYGrt7FN2lOstO1yDjCEbA to find out the date and time of the activity periods and then check your post history to see how many of them you posted in. Multiply the number of periods by 14 and that is your potential activity.

+ I recommend using this table: Merit points calculator. Created by iasenko. I use this table, and I'm very pleased. Smiley

I doubt merit system is working.
Almost everyone has a "round" number of merit which they got because of their rank when merit was implemented

Apart from the 15196 accounts that don't. https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.36967936

The fact that the vast majority that hasn't made a contribution worthy of earning a single Merit in nearly 4 months are unable to rank up is a sign of success.
