6 Surprising Advantages Of All Your Screen Time

PART I

Thanks to Covid, many of us are spending more time than ever behind a screen. We’re getting to grips with telecommuting — some for the first time ever — and then packing out our free time with on-screen entertainment too. Under the confines of lockdown, what else is there to do? Yes, we all know by now that we should be taking our self-care seriously, getting some exercise, eating right, and finding healthy outlets for those grizzly surges of pandemic-stress. However, under these circumstances, silver linings have become a precious resource! With that in mind, there’s something else that’s worth recognizing. It turns out that there are some pretty funky up-sides to working (and playing) behind a screen. If you’d like to feel a little less irked by your new goggle-eyed lifestyle, read on:

1. That Desk Job Is A Guardian For Your Later-Life Cognition

New research from the University of Cambridge reveals something that some might find counter-intuitive. Monitoring study participants over the course of an average of twelve years, the researchers discovered that desk-based workers are at lower risk of subsequent poor cognition than their more physically active counterparts. Examining changes in things like memory, attention, visual processing speeds and reading ability, they found that those who stuck with the desk job throughout the study fared the best — populating the top 10% of performers. It’s worth noting that the study did not examine whether those desk workers were hitting the gym after hours, so don’t consider this a write-off of the idea that exercise also boosts brain health!

2. Working At A Computer May Also Guard Against Alzheimer’s

Boding well for your noggin to an even greater extent, a collection of studies suggest that sitting at a computer might also keep Alzheimer’s at bay. Research presented at the Society for Neuroscience revealed that a group of older internet neophytes who took up a daily practice of surfing the web demonstrated impressive changes in brain activity. A study from UCLA Longevity Center, led by Dr. Gary Small, author of The Alzheimer’s Prevention Program, took the research further, and found that participants frontal lobes were quickly activated by their browsing. This is the area of the brain helps us solve problems and controls working memory. Small’s study indicated that mentally stimulating activities, including time at computer screens, can lessen our chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of cognitive impairment.

3. Screen Time Leads To Perception Super-Powers

Have you found yourself wondering if all of those Zoom calls, work reports and YouTube wormholes are wreaking havoc for your vision? New research indicates that the answer is, happily, perhaps quite the opposite. In fact, data from Psychology Professor and Cognitive and Brain Sciences Coordinator Peter Gerhardstein’s lab at Binghamton University indicates that our vision is highly adaptable. Of course, the idea that people who regularly play action video games are more adept at learning new sensorimotor tasks, better at perceiving orientation, and have improve hand-eye coordination than most is nothing new. What’s interesting about Gerhardstein’s research is that it points to other screen users also exhibiting more complex perception abilities, like being able to switch between digital and real world environments with ease.

4. Taking Your Time Back

Have you taken a moment to consider how much more of your time is your own since you made the switch to working from home? We can’t speak to time saved by staying in your PJs all day — but if you were previously a commuter, you’ll probably find some satisfaction in doing the math! According to ACAS, the average Londoner spent 74 minutes every day travelling to and from work in the pre-Covid world. Going state-side, statistics from the Auto Insurance Center indicated that American commuters spent about 100 hours commuting, and a staggering 41 hours stuck in traffic each year. A long commute has been associated with health issues such as elevated blood sugar, higher cholesterol, and greater risk of depression, so there’s a bonus for all who now find themselves relegated to remote work. If you were a pre-lockdown commuter, why not tot up the hours you’ve saved, and put some thought into how you’re using them? Whether at your screen or otherwise, that time is now yours to keep!

5. You’re Saving The Environment

According to data published by FlexJobs at the end of 2020, 1 in 4 Americans are expected to work remotely in 2021. This works out at roughly 39 million people, and marks the equivalent of taking more than 6,000,000 cars off the road for an entire year! FlexJobs also highlighted that by making other eco-concious choices — such as avoiding using paper (so keeping our work on our screens) and monitoring air-con and heating use — remote workers potentially hold the same power to positively impact our atmosphere as planting an entire forest of 91 million trees. Fundamentally, if you’ve made the switch to working from home you have played a meaningful part in safeguarding our environment. This means better health for the planet, and better air quality for you and your loved ones.

6. Welcome To The Work Satisfaction Club

If pixels are a pre-requisite for telecommuting, then there’s more to be said in favour of your screen time. Working from home allows us to experience a greater sense of autonomy, as we choose how to structure our day, when to take yoga-breaks, and whether we’re early birds or night owls, productively speaking. So, why does this matter? Studies have shown that increased autonomy tends to mean greater job satisfaction. What’s more, remote workers tend to be happier and more likely to stick with their jobs. They also tend to be less stressed, and enjoy stronger relationships. Of course, while the world is turned a little upside down by the coronavirus, none of us are likely to feel at our best. That said, it’s pretty comforting to know that the recent virtual version of living that has been thrust upon so many of us is not all bad. It might even help us keep enough mojo in the kitty to come through this challenging time relatively unscathed.

Kicking Your Inner Critic To The Curb

PART II

Re-Cast Your Critical Voice

If those gut-punching thoughts just keep popping into your mind, re-casting your critical voice is another great strategy to adopt. For many, those cruel little catch phrases come at us in our own voice, while for others it may be the voice of a parent or teacher. Whatever the current status-quo, with a little creative thinking you can re-cast your inner critic as any character you desire. Giving that voice a silly nickname or imagining Mr. Burns from the Simpsons will take some of the weight out of those words, until you can stop them coming at you all together. If your inner critic tends to speak in the first person, try to switch those “I”s to “you”s. Separate your inner critic from your sense of self, and then knock it down a peg!

Choose Problem Solving Over Rumination

Those who wrestle with negative self-talk are usually familiar with its side-kicks: self-blame and rumination. Allowing these two troublemakers to crash our inner party is not something to be OK about, because research links them to an increased risk of mental health problems. In truth, going over and over how something went wrong or how we should have done things differently doesn’t change a thing. Looking for opportunities to be proactive and engaging in problem solving — identifying things that you can impact in a meaningful way moving forwards — is, in contrast, totally empowering.

Puncture Those Critical Points

A rampaging inner critic tends to be a master of catastrophising. The secret that it doesn’t want you to know is that you’ll soon spot that its narratives are riddled with holes, when under closer inspection. When that negative self-talk swoops in, ask yourself: what’s the worst that could happen? If the critical voice says you’ll falter when you do that work presentation and then your world will fall apart, will it really matter so much? If it says you’re an [insert insult of choice] person, does that reflect reality, or is it rooted in flaky and flawed logic? While you’re at it, zoom out a little and get some perspective, too. Will whatever your inner critic is so concerned about really matter next year, or a decade from now?

Lean In To Self-Acceptance

When we give too much power to our inner critic, we limit our thinking. In turn, this limits our horizons. If you give credence to self talk telling you that you’ll never get that raise, write that book, or run that marathon, then trying to achieve that dream is going to be all the harder. So, what’s the antidote? Self-compassion and self-acceptance are key. Carl R. Rogers, author of On Becoming a Person: A Therapist’s View of Psychotherapy, explained it thusly: “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” You don’t have to be perfect to be worthy — none of us are. Any voice that says otherwise, be it internal or external, simply isn’t worth your glorious attention.

Kicking Your Inner Critic To The Curb

PART I

How often does negative self-talk take the reins within your mind? If your the voice of your inner critic is frustratingly familiar, you’re certainly not alone. The tricky truth of the matter is that our inner critic all-too-often slams the brakes on our capacity to live our best lives. Thankfully, there is a lot we can do to diminish that inner nay-sayer’s clout. Excitingly, science tells us that taking control of our self-talk is not only possible, but can offer life-altering results. Case in point, when a group of athletes were studied as they underwent self-talk training, their rewards included greater self-confidence, self-optimization, self-efficacy, and performance, with reduced levels of anxiety as a welcome cherry-on-top.

So, where exactly does that niggling voice come from? Years of research reveals that children who grew up with overly critical guardians often internalise that negative narrative. For others, the absence of a soothing and supportive caregiver during childhood may also contribute to an emboldened inner critic. You may or may not not have a strong sense of how your inner critic came to be, but there’s comfort to be found in recognising that its presence is not entirely a bad thing. Critical self-talk indicates that we care, which can always be considered something good. The magic happens when we bring our self-talk back into the fold, and make sure that we aren’t letting it build any internal barriers between us and our happiness. So, here’s how to recognise when your inner critic goes rogue, and get it back in check!

Tune In To Your Thoughts

The voice of the inner critic can sneak up on us when we least expect it. That said, a lot of people don’t pay much attention to how they talk to themselves in their minds. If you’ve noticed your inner critic chiming in with a totally deflating “I’ll never be good enough” or “I always get it wrong”, then it’s time to start tracking that inner gremlin’s activity. As your thoughts meander throughout the day, try to be alert when the inner critic interrupts. From here, experiment with a practice called thought stopping. This means delivering a deft counter-interruption, by doing something like imagining a bright red stop sign, parrying back with a positive thought, or snapping a rubber band on your wrist whenever you catch that inner critic in action.

Apply The Friend Test

A great way of assessing whether your self talk is worthy of the mental real estate it occupies is to subject it to the friend test. Ask yourself: if a friend spoke to you in that way, would you remain friends for long? Would you ever speak to someone you care about in that way? If the answer is no then you definitely have a bone to pick with your inner critic! To shift your self-talk for the better, hold focus on the idea that your inner voice should always be that of a supportive and trusted friend rather than a saboteur — even if that sometimes means telling it like it is with kindness.

Navigating From Grief To Grace In A Crisis

PART II

Process Your Emotions

During certain crises — including the current one — we may find that our personal support network is out of reach. Seeking support from our community is known as social coping, and while this may be off the menu in a conventional sense, finding alternative outlets for our emotions is important. This might mean connecting with someone new, or pushing through any hesitation over video-calling loved ones. Writing in a journal during a difficult episode can also help — just get those thoughts up and out for as long as they keep coming, rather than letting them build up.

Ramp Down Your Stress Response

Remaining in a stress state over long periods can have a negative impact on health if left unchecked. Thankfully, there are practical ways to help your body shift down a gear, and move out of a stress response. Exploring meditation, breathing exercises, and self-compassion practices can help you identify what works for you. The self-care strategies above will also assist in de-escalating overwhelming feelings of stress and anxiety — routine is a powerful thing.

Safeguard Your Resources

You might not be able to keep all the balls in the air during a crisis, and frankly, why should you? When life stretches you to your limits, the time arrives to triage how you spend your emotional and physical energy. Of course, some responsibilities are non-negotiable, but there’s usually some wiggle room to be discovered. Shedding unnecessary drains might mean unplugging from Social Media for a few days and skipping reading the news, or it might mean ordering take away rather than cooking. Tuning into what acts as a trigger over the course of each day may also help you to pin point what doesn’t need your attention tomorrow.

Make Time For Good Things

Keeping activities in your life that usually make you feel healthy and happy is invaluable — even if they don’t seem to pack quite the same punch at the moment. Whether it’s gardening, reading, listening to music, or taking long baths, doing things just for yourself can help to keep you grounded until the cloud of a crisis lifts. When we don’t have a strong sense of control, taking the reins where we can — especially in a positive way — while working to let go of what is out of our remit will help to restore a sense of balance.

Deciding To Ask For Help

f you are finding that strong emotions or even emotional numbness are unwilling to shift, it may be time to seek help. The Covid-19 pandemic has only seen an increase in the availability of so-called teleheath professionals, who provide online psychological support. Virtual support groups and forums can also provide another digital form of social coping. When it comes to your well being, reaching out is always a worthy cause.

Navigating From Grief To Grace In A Crisis

PART I

From time to time, life tends to throw us all a mighty curve ball. The thing that knocks us well and truly off our feet might arrive in the form of bereavement, a natural disaster, illness, the loss of a job — or even an unprecedented global pandemic. Whatever the unwelcome culprit, ignoring the associated impact to our well being is a pretty dodgy game plan. We might be tempted to reach for the Scotch, or stay in bed all day — and there can be a little space for those things — but, at some point, steps in self care are the best bet to carry you through that crisis moment, and out of the other side.

Checking In With Yourself

So, how can you tell if you’re coping well, or if it’s time to rally reinforcements? Start by skipping making comparisons between how you’re doing and how others around you are holding up. While there may be certain common factors in play, the challenge that each individual faces will depend on a variety of visible and invisible factors. If you are feeling harder hit, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are coping less well — it may simply mean that you have had more to cope with in one way or another.

A more useful comparison is to consider how far you are from your own baseline. Think back to before crisis struck, and how you feel and behave under normal circumstances. At times, our struggle can feel obvious but at others we may need to catch our own warning signs. Are you drinking more alcohol, or getting less sleep? Are you behaving recklessly, or struggling to get things done? Of course, during times of crisis negative emotions are not necessarily a bad thing. Feeling sad can be an entirely natural response — part of a healthy grieving process when we are separated from loved ones, or undergo a traumatic life shift. Negative emotions can also be our allies, helping us to identify problems and motivating us to find ways forwards.

Deciding To Make A Change

The current Covid-19 pandemic has at the very least sent us all on an unanticipated emotional roller coaster, and in many cases triggered practical life-crises too. While grieving the normal that we’ve all been yanked away from, many have identified the need to adopt some new coping strategies — not least of all because this seems to have become an endurance event! Providing a glimpse into this trend, Google search data from the UK reveals that increasingly people are on the hunt for better means for building resilience and coping skills. If you feel that the pandemic — or indeed any crisis that you are facing — is taking its toll, there are a number of simple practices that you can begin incorporating right away.

Don’t Allow Self-Care To Be Optional

In the midst of a crisis, the normal day-to-day tends to fly out of the window. While we might not feel like practising self-care, doing so can reinforce the resources we have available to navigate what we’re facing. Avoiding alcohol, eating regular healthful meals, dialling in our sleep hygiene, and getting a little exercise every day will re-stock our personal resilience kitty, giving both bodies and brains a boost.

This Is Not The Lockdown Salve You’re Looking For…

If you too have become familiar with hanging your head in shame as the postman arrives with yet another ‘you can’t remember what you ordered at 3am the other night, can you?’ package, while the neighbour’s curtains twitch furtively, then don’t fear — you’re not alone!

Perhaps late-night Amazon Smile or Etsy binges aren’t your pandemic poison. Maybe you’re among the hoard who have navigated lockdown by cultivating complex boozing habits that have progressively become more and more obscure and risky as you’ve neared the back of the liquor cabinet. Many have learned that strange fruity liqueurs gifted by least-favourite aunts some six or seven Birthdays ago make for particularly haranguing hangovers. Who knew?

Of course, we’ve mostly given ourselves merciful grace for stumbling into such digressions. After all, the world has never faced such a scaled and universal crisis before. However, we are now in the post-Christmas season, Christmas is associated with debauchery, and something has to give — lest our waist bands bear the brunt of a further decent into poor and impulsive attempts at self soothing. It’s time for a salve that doesn’t come with a dose of guilt, inches on the waistline, or a lingering headache. It’s time for a change of tack.

The answer lies not in a new meditation app or the mastery of an advanced yoga pose, but rather in doing something selfless. Beyond our flailing inner angst over the broad impact of the present crisis, we’re collectively grieving a loss of connection with each other. All this at a time that has seen devastatingly divisive politics and toxic individualism run amuck, no less. While a cocktail may temporarily help us forget, and feverish impulse-buying may give us a momentarily pleasant dopamine kick, doing something for others provides a far more restorative reward. The so-called ‘helpers high’ provides those giving generously with not only dopamine, but oxytocin and serotonin too — calming our inner cortisol soup, and counteracting the sort of cumulative stress that lingers.

For me, the dawning realisation of a necessity for a change arrived as I came to terms with being the new owner of a beautifully constructed purple bowler hat that I would undoubtedly never have the courage to wear in public. I’ve been living in my pyjamas for three weeks. When am I ever even going to be able to go out again, anyway? What made me imagine that this was going to be the look for that post-lockdown moment of revelry? Please, someone take away my credit card! Things had undoubtedly gotten out of hand.

In place of deeply suspect spontaneity, I have now pledged to make a small donation to a good cause whenever I sense my cursor sliding towards the search bar, fuelled subconsciously by mischievous intent. Better yet, make each a standing order, so the clout of your giving will only grow. In fact, there are so many potential ways to give, and so much reason to do so right now, that this feels like playing catch-up. There are, and have always been, individuals in crisis and families struggling. But, as the shock waves left by the Covid-19 wave unfurl, such needs are only getting greater. Giving to charity, donating to soup kitchens, collecting gifted clothing, volunteering to distribute food — and any number of other options — are always only a little research and a noble act of reaching out away.

Not every kind of giving requires financial means — or even stretched credit limits — as in many cases simply time, effort, and thought are enough. What each gesture shares in common, however, is that during these difficult times it will indeed make us feel better, and by its nature, it will make others feel better and fare better too. The secret, it would seem, to riding out this pandemic is to do so with kindness. You see, positivity has viral properties of its own — so, spread the word.

Where Does Imagination Come From?

PART II

Imagination In The Brain

Despite all of this understanding, we still don’t have all the details of how humans are able to, say, invent tools or create art dialled in. It turns out that our imagination doesn’t just take place in one area of the brain, but over a vast and complex network. Researchers from the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Dartmouth, gained impressive insight into the scope of this network with the assistance of fMRI and some helpful participants. The study identified a widespread cortical and subcortical neural network that mirrored the established theory of a “mental workspace” within the brain — previously envisioned as being responsible for our acrobatic cognitive abilities. Lead author Alex Schlegel highlighted that the findings mean getting one step closer to a greater understanding of what sets humans apart from other animals, and speculated that this type of research may also provide the means to gain “insight into where human creativity comes from and possibly allow us to recreate those same creative processes in machines.”

While studies have identified activity in no-less than 12 areas of the brain while subjects were busy within the workspace of their minds eye, a few key areas have earned extra attention. The neocortex and thalamus are understood to play vital roles, as they serve as neural hubs for brain functions such as forming emotions, memories, and thoughts. Our capacity to construct something new from pre-existing information stored in the mind is thought to be controlled by the prefrontal cortex through what is known as “mental synthesis”. In this capacity, the prefrontal cortex is understood to act as a puppetmaster, instructing various neural networks elsewhere in the brain — that had no previous connection — to fire at the same time. As they say, “neurons that fire together, wire together”. This masterful puppeteering allows us to use our real-world references as creative lego blocks to mentally construct something new.

Harnessing Your Imagination By Building New Associations

So, it would seem that triggering different neural networks to fire together for the first time is how we can put that zebra in that car. Excitingly, this also points to a potential for harnessing imagination in the pursuit of building more strategic associations. Researchers from Harvard University and the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive Brain Sciences revealed the value of imagination exercises by demonstrating that we can imagine our way towards new thinking patterns. Study participants were asked to provide a list of people they really liked, and a list of places that they felt neutrally about. While lying in an fMRI scanner, they were asked at various stages to imagine the people and places, and to imagine meeting someone from their much-liked list in one of their neutral locations.

The researchers discovered that after mentally placing a favoured person in an unassociated location, participants brains began to show the same positive psychological response to that place alone as they had originally to the person in question. They concluded that by using imagination to build new neural connections, a positive psychological transference can take place. Just as our real-world experiences shape the way we respond to life’s stimuli, so too can our imaginings. So, by proactively building helpful associations simply in the form of imagination exercises, we may be able to effectively code our attitude, and therefore steer our experience, as we move through life.

Where Does Imagination Come From?

PART I

You’re unlikely to see a zebra driving a car any time soon, except perhaps in your mind’s eye. In fact, you probably just did — I’ll bet you just imaged that exact strange sight without any particular exertion! Have you ever stopped to wonder exactly how your mind does that? Far from being something only relevant to childhood fantasy games and daydreaming, using our imagination is something that we do much of the time, and is an ability that we often take for granted. Our capacity to mix and match everything that we’ve got mentally stored away allows us to do everything from coming up with brilliant business ideas to throwing together an unplanned meal. It means that we can visualise what we want from the future, and come up with goals to get us from here to there. So, how do we manage this wonderful feat?

Creating In Our Mind’s Eye

The earliest known introduction of the concept of our “mind’s eye” came from Roman scholar Marcus Tullius Cicero, who mused that “the eyes of the mind are more easily directed to those objects which we have seen, than to those which we have only heard”. While this may be true — it definitely takes less effort to imagine something for which we have visual references to draw from — we have a pretty extraordinary capacity for building even that which has never been seen before in our mind’s eye. Being able to harness imagination in this way is a capacity that we have evolved over many millennia.

By tracking the development of different areas of the brain, scientists have estimated that mammals first developed the capacity for REM sleep, otherwise known as dreaming, some 140 million years ago. Primates cultivated the capacity for spontaneous insight around 70 million years ago, and our prefrontal cortex — the part of our brain that allows modern human behaviour — was only fully formed within our ancestors brains around 70,000 years ago. Paleoanthropologists describe this pivotal step in our development as the “Cognitive Revolution” or the “Great Leap Forward”. Fascinatingly, some people lack the capacity to visualise in the mind’s eye, which is recognised as the condition aphantasia.

Not Ready For The Entrepreneur’s Path? You Can Be An Intrepreneur Instead!

PART II

Getting Into The Intrepreneur Mindset

Being an effective intrepreneur means creating real value, and that requires some strategy. The most inventive ideas are nothing more than razzle-dazzle if they don’t meet a concrete need, so the way to establish yourself as an intrepreneur is to zero in on problems before you start looking for solutions. What are the pain points within your business? Hunt out inefficiencies, silos, and missed opportunities. Explore what the competition are doing right, and examine potential market gaps that are waiting to be filled. Some intrepreneurial masterpieces may involve creating something from the ground up, while others will mean tightening up current systems, and repurposing existing solutions for new problems.

Once your inner light-bulb is illuminated, mastering the art of the pitch is going to be essential. While you may not be steering the ship, communication skills are a core quality among intrepreneurs. This means painting a picture of necessity for your employers, and delivering a clear road map to successful implementation. Running your ideas past colleagues before going up the ladder can be invaluable — not only as an opportunity to test your vision, but also as a chance to learn from those who see things from a different angle. Finally, intrepreneurship means being economically minded about when to express outlined ideas. There is no point in working through minute details of something that hasn’t been green-lit yet, and the intrepreneur is, after all, on company time.

Job Satisfaction In Intrepreneurship

Thriving as an intrepreneur means possessing a dynamic mindset that places onus on creative problem solving, rather than coddling ideas through to fruition. Taking on the role of innovator means being ready to hear the word “no” from time to time, and not taking that as a sign of failure. Creator of the Nobel prize, Alfred Nobel, once said: “If I have a thousand ideas and only one turns out to be good, I am satisfied.” The value of the intrepreneur is in seeing something which others don’t — rather than their role in what comes next.

Of course, you might well wind up running the show when the moment for implementation arrives, but if your concept hits the wall take is as a chance to ask questions. Find out why it’s a no-go, and let what you learn inform you when you go back to the drawing board. When your every-day involves the chance to break new ground an envision something unimagined, stagnation won’t even be on the menu.

Not Ready For The Entrepreneur’s Path? You Can Be An Intrepreneur Instead!

PART I

Have you ever looked around you, and wondered why so many people seem to be satisfied with a stagnant daily grind? If you’ve got a churning in your belly for something more — a deeper sense of purpose — then our topic today might be your calling. Among the most creative and innovative thinkers, many take the entrepreneur’s path and build a business of their own. However, there is another route to professional satisfaction. Increasingly, businesses are seeing the immense value to be unleashed in nurturing those who think outside the box. It’s time to let go of the stuffy notion that working for a boss means towing the line, without space for anything more. Is intrepreneurship for you, and if so are you ready to meet your potential?

What Is An Intrepreneur, Anyway?

‘Intrepreneur’ has been a buzzword for a while now, but it hasn’t quite cracked the mainstream. I mean, even my spellchecker is wondering what I’m on about — so if you haven’t heard the term before, you’re not alone! The simplest way to understand the idea is to imagine the person working for a company who thinks like an entrepreneur, and does so on the company’s behalf.

These are the individuals who alter the course of brands, develop bright solutions to problems, and identify opportunities that would otherwise have been missed. For the individual who strives to own this characterisation, intrepreneurship means the chance to experience a meaningful and productive professional life, with the security of a stable salary, and within a sociable work environment. While many of us understandably aspire to leadership, intrepreneurship also offers an excellent alternative into cutting-edge work — one that doesn’t necessarily require taking the helm in terms of people-power.

Why Businesses Are Looking To Intrepreneurs

Both freelancing and entrepreneurship are on the rise — and these trends are only expected to increase in the kick-back to Covid-19. While such shifts within the business marketplace are undoubtedly exciting, they also bring with them the reality that retention of the highest calibre employees is becoming more of a challenge.

Research from Peerism pointed to the projection that freelancers could represent 80% of the global workforce by 2030, which means that while businesses are certainly providing demand for talented freelancers, they are also undergoing a reshuffle in terms of in-house innovative thinking. Within today’s ultra-competitive environment, intrepreneurs offer savvy businesses a breath of fresh air — these are the folks that cut clear paths away from antiquated practices, identify new opportunities, retool current resources, and help brands leapfrog over the heads of their competition.

How trading algorithms are created

Quantitative trading isn't accessible solely to institutional traders; retail traders are getting involved as well. While programming skills are recommended if you want to produce algorithms, even those aren't always required. Programs and services are available that write the programming code for a strategy based on the inputs you provide. The code produced by the program/service is then plugged into the trading platform and trading commences. But before any of this can occur, want-to-be algorithmic traders progress through several steps deciding exactly what they want to accomplish with the algorithm, and how.

Time Frame and Constraints
While a well-programmed algorithm can run on its own, some human oversight is recommended. Therefore, choose a time frame and a trade frequency that you are able to monitor. If you have a full-time job and your algorithm is programed to make hundreds of trades a day on a one-minute chart while you are at work, that may not be ideal. You may wish to choose a slightly longer-term time frame for your trades, and less trade frequency so you can keep tabs on it.

Profitability in the testing phase of the algorithm doesn't mean it will continue to produce those returns forever. Occasionally you will need to step in and alter the trading algorithm if the results reveal it isn't functioning well anymore. This is also a time commitment that anyone who undertakes algorithmic trading must accept.

Financial constraints are also an issue. Commissions rack up very quickly with a high-frequency trading strategy, so make sure you're with the lowest-cost broker available, and that the profit potential of each trade warrants paying those commissions, potentially many times a day. Starting capital is also a consideration. Different markets and financial products require different amounts capital. If day trading stocks, you'll need at least $25,000 (more is recommended), but trading forex or futures you can potentially start with less.

Market constraints are another issue. Not every market is suited to algorithmic trading. Choose stocks, ETFs, forex pairs or futures with ample liquidity to handle the orders the algorithm will be producing.

Develop or Fine Tune a Strategy
Once the financial and time constraints are understood, develop or fine tune a strategy that can be programed. You may have a strategy you trade manually, but is it easily coded? If your strategy is highly subjective, and not rule based, programming the strategy could be impossible. Rule-based strategies are the easiest to code—strategies with entries, stop losses and price targets based on quantifiable data or price movements.

Since rule-based strategies are easily copied and tested, there are plenty freely available if you don't have ideas of your own. Quantpedia is one such resource, providing academic papers and trading results for various quantitative trading methods. The rules outlined can be coded and then tested for profitability on past and current data. Coding an algorithm requires programming skill or access to software or someone who can code for you.

Testing a Trading Algorithm
The most important step is testing. Once a trading strategy has been coded, don't trade real capital with it until it has been tested. Testing includes letting the algorithm run on historical price data, showing how the algorithm performed over thousands of trades. If the historical testing phase is profitable, and the statistics produced are acceptable for your risk tolerance—such as maximum draw down, win ratio, risk of ruin, for example—then proceed to test the algorithm in live conditions on a demo account. Once again, this phase should produce hundreds of trades so you can access the performance.

If the algorithm is profitable on historic price data and trading a live demo account, use it trade real capital but with a watchful eye. Live conditions are different than historic or demo testing, because the algorithm's orders actually affect the market and can cause slippage. Until it is verified the algorithm works in the real market, as it did in testing, maintain a watchful eye.

Continual Maintenance
As long as the algorithm is operating within the statistical parameters established during testing, leave the algorithm alone. Algorithms have the benefit of trading without emotion, but a trader who constantly tinkers with the algorithm is nullifying that benefit. The algorithm does require attention though. Monitor performance, and if market conditions change so much that the algorithm is no longer working as it should, then adjustments may be required.

The Bottom Line
Algorithmic trading isn't a set-and-forget endeavor that makes you rich overnight. In fact, quantitative trading can be just as much work as trading manually. If you choose to create an algorithm be aware of how time, financial and market constraints may affect your strategy, and plan accordingly. Turn a current strategy into a rule-based one, which can be more easily programed, or select a quantitative method that has already been tested and researched. Then, run your own testing phase using historic and current data. If that checks out, then run the algorithm with real money under a watchful eye. Adjust if required, but otherwise let it do its job.

What does it cost to use the algorithms?

Yes, within your GRAYLL App account you can send referral links to your contacts, your referrals benefit from a % reduction on fees charged on the profits from the algorithmic positions when your referrals close their algorithmic positions. You in turn benefit by receiving the % difference. *For example the standard fee on profits is 18%, if your referral receives a 16.67% reduction on that fee, the referred party now has a reduced fee on profits of 15%. You benefit by receiving 3% on all profits that your referral makes.

From Safe Spaces To Memory Palaces: Building Inner Worlds

PART II

The Mastery Of The Memory Palace

Did you know that some 90% of the world’s most talented memorisers use an imagined place to commit things to memory? This practice is known as the “memory palace” technique, or the “method of loci”. Each year, a number of memory competitions take place all over the world, culminating in the World Memory Championship, where the best memorisers out there can compete to earn the title of best in the world! Some of the extraordinary feats achieved by these gifted individuals have included Clemens Mayer’s perfect recollection of 1040 random digits, that he had only a half-hour to commit to memory. Perhaps most mind-blowingly, memory master Gary Chang used the method of loci to memorise the first 65,536 digits of pi! So, how is such recall achieved?

“Loci” means locations in Latin, and the art of the memory palace is to build an entire location within the mind, and then strategically place the things you need to remember within it. You might recall the term “memory palace” if you’re a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch’s TV portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, or if you’ve ever read Tomas Harris’ Hannibal novels. In the real world, most masters use a place that they are intimately familiar with, such as their childhood home. An entirely invented space can be used, but it must be mentally manifested down to the detail, so don’t skimp on tactile touches if attempting this yourself!

The idea is to establish a sequential series of stop-points, or loci, along a route through the space. At each point the thing that must be memorised should be introduced as vividly as possible. So, if for example you wished to create a memory palace for your shopping list, imagining your cereal box opening the door, or your coffee cuddling on the sofa will help to make the memory easier to retrieve. In fact, World Memory Championship competitor Ed Cooke said that “the more outlandish and vulgar” each memory device was, the more likely he was to recall it!

Why Are Imagined Worlds So Effective?

A brain imaging study from the University of Colorado verified what many have long suspected — that our minds react to the things we imagine much as they would things we encounter in real life. So, if you imagine a giant spider crawling towards you, you are likely to have a similar stress response to the one you’d experience in the presence of a real arachnid! Thankfully, this also means that if we imagine something positive, and in this case some place tranquil and comforting, we can benefit from the same chemical triggering within the brain — only this time, of the kind that will make us feel better.

In the case of those super-talented memorisers, studies indicate that practising the use of memory palaces activates regions of the brain involved in spacial awareness as well as detail recollection. The retrisplendial cotex, right posterior hippocampus, and medial parietal cortex all light up when engaging the method of loci — of these, the latter is most associated with the encoding and retrieving of information. So, what’s the takeaway? Perhaps it is to ask yourself, is your imagination working against you — as would be the case if you were ruminating over worse case scenarios — or is it acting as your super power? The world “imagination” shares common etymology with the word “magic”, so remember to treat it as such!

From Safe Spaces To Memory Palaces: Building Inner Worlds

PART I

The human capacity to imagine is extraordinary. Our minds can splice different bits and pieces together to create something entirely new! When we use our imagination, multiple neural networks are triggered within our brains to fire together at exactly the same moment. This allows us to compose multiple mental references into one marvellous new concoction.

If you have a vivid imagination, you might have come us will all sorts of extraordinary ideas in the past — from new business concepts to epic DIY solutions, or even great stories for your kids. But, have you ever imagined up an entire place? The art of creating imagined spaces can be valuable in a number of different ways. Here, we will examine some common practices involving dreaming up a world of our own, and exactly why building within our minds eye is so effective.

Self Soothing In Your Own Custom Safe Space

Building an imaginary space is a common tool used both as a particular form of meditation, and for therapeutic purposes. Fans of 1990s cinema might remember Edward Norton’s character finding a penguin within his imagined mind-cave in the film Fight Club. In perhaps more constructive real-world examples, some might imagine a beautiful garden or a pristine white beach. They might imagine their childhood bedroom, or a space that is utterly surreal and other-worldly. The fundamental to this technique is to create an inner space in which you can feel the way you want to.

Those who have experienced trauma or are struggling with anxiety might use an imagined space as a place to retreat into where they can feel calm and safe. A busy business executive might withdraw to a mentally constructed place to think more clearly. Building detail into your imagined safe space will help to make it more effective. So, consider textures and colours. Where is the light coming from? Are surfaces hard or soft, warm or cold? Building a place that engages the senses — even only in our mind — can allow us to tap into a sense of safety, relaxation, or peace, regardless of what is going on around us in the real world.

Mastering New Year Reinvention: Mimic Nature’s Natural Renewal Cycle

PART II

At certain junctures in our lives, the drive to reinvent ourselves seems obvious. A bad breakup, illness, bereavement, a career setback, or worse might have pulled the rug out from underneath us. At others, cultural indicators tell us to commit to our “new you”, be it a milestone birthday, or an office party prompt to confess New Year’s resolutions. However sometimes the most rewarding reinventions come from an origin a little more nuanced. We might recognise that — while on paper all seems well — we are in a rut, stuck waiting for things to happen rather than facilitating change, or failing to engage our whole selves.
Rather than making New Year’s resolutions that serve as an addendum to your status quo, imagine the potential that could be manifested if you let every bad habit, choice that doesn’t serve you, or unhelpful hesitation fall away just as those crisping yellow and red leaves do. Nature returns to the drawing board each and every year without hesitation. It doesn’t cling to the season past, but learns the lessons, lets go, recharges, and then goes again. With this in mind, rather than rebelling against your inner urge to go to ground, take it as a call for introspection. When we withdraw momentarily from always pushing ahead, we can take the time to identify what we wish to manifest in the future.

The Human Variety Of Reinvention

If we imagine that our formed facade falls away with the turning of the year, and that it can be reborn in equal likeness, or with a radical new direction of growth, what might we do?

The leading notion might be that we want to be better in some way, but its also worth recognising that we might simply want to be different. Our personal projects should align with the person we want to be — and the person you want to be in 2021 might be quite different from the person you set out to be in 2020. As you introspect and envision what form your sprouting self might take, practice laying your branches bare with the following questions:

• Does the way you spend your time reflect your values? Deft execution of an immaculate timetable does not define time well spent any more than procrastination does. So, mentally clear your schedule. Rebuild it based on the things that you have to do, and the things that really matter to you. How will you use the time freed up? We recommend adding in more of the latter!

• On the scale from positive to negative, where are you perched? The person with a positive mindset experiences the world very differently from another with a pessimistic outlook. From the emotions that we feel to the ways in which we react to the world, moving this slider can be transformative. If your outlook has room to grow, identify someone whose positivity inspires you, and emulate them.

• Are you content with how you define yourself? The roles we take in life tend to come with tags: I’m a gamer, I’m a teacher, I’m a home-maker, I’m a lawyer, and so on. The great thing about such definitions is that all we need to do to change our narrative is take on a new skill. New definitions such as: I’m bilingual, I’m a great cook, I’m a programmer, or I’m an artist are only a proactive leap away.

Every time we reinvent ourselves, we grow and change. We become someone different — be it subtly or dramatically. Thinking back to that tree, we realise that this pattern is familiar. Not only is it familiar, but it’s entirely ordinary — so why wouldn’t we be able to do it for ourselves? As it turns out, reinvention is the most natural thing in the world, and knowing that is pure liberation. So, are you ready for your New Year renewal?

Mastering New Year Reinvention: Mimic Nature’s Natural Renewal Cycle

PART I

As the kaleidoscope of autumnal colours fall away and winter sets in, many of us feel a nagging call to hibernation. Of course, modern life doesn’t often accommodate such an extreme example of leaving the fast lane! For the achievement oriented, our instinct is likely to fight against the urge to fold in upon ourselves, but indulging a pause in that winter stillness — even if only for a moment — can offer substantial value. Undoubtedly, there is a bare honesty to this time of year that can be difficult to avoid. The question to ask as we face down that unfettered reflection of our current state of play is: why would we avoid it? Nature is giving us perfect cues to an annual opportunity for reinvention.

More Than Meets The Eye

In the natural order of things, powerful work takes place when all around us appears to be sleeping. As both the light and the temperature dims, there is more going on than meets the eye. Trees that appear undressed continue to grow beneath the soil, having shed the version of themselves that existed the year before. They are preparing to bring forth a new, improved, and more substantial iteration as soon as spring arrives. Mycelium spreads through the damp soil, making quick work of reclaiming that which no longer serves, and contributing to the loam from which new life will soon burst.
There is something to be said for stepping into harmony with nature’s rhythm — something that we can always connect with, even in the most urban of environments. Faced with such a whimsical metaphor, however, the practically minded among you are probably tapping the tabletop with impatience, wondering: but how does this translate for a human being? Without sprouting roots from our toes, how can we mimic the tree outside our window, and why would we want to?

Why You Need Mentors In Your Life

PART II

Finding The Right Mentor

Many contemporary employees and educational institutions offer mentorship schemes. There are also numerous online mentor finding services, such as findamentor.com. However, for some, the right mentor relationships are something that occurs organically — which is not to say that initiation this type of relationship doesn’t require work. In my own case, I can think of three mentors who each helped me to make a major pivot along my personal journey. One was a employer, far my senior; another was a colleague who was a little further along the path than I was; and the last was an online connection who shared my passions. In each case, there was an element of natural kinship, but equally, an element of bravery was required on my part. When you see your own potential reflected in the reality that someone else has attained, a dose of boldness and proactivity is required if you are going to persuade them to take you under their wing!

Have you ever met someone, and quickly realised that this person possessed qualities that you’d really like to emulate? Perhaps it was their career achievements, or perhaps it was their work-life balance, air of integrity, or general attitude to life. Professor Drew Appleby of Indiana University and Purdue University explains: “Mentors help people determine who they want to become, (and) how they must change in order to become these people.” We’ve all heard the phrase that we should surround ourselves with people who reflect who we want to be, and how we want to feel. Never is this more true than in the case of a mentor. So, how do you reach out, having identified a potential mentor in your life?

Vital to this process is recognising that a mentor must see something within you that they can help to accelerate. Don’t wait to excel only after finding a mentor. Start working towards excellence first — set yourself in motion — and then have faith that this will allow you to attract the mentor that you ultimately need. Be brave when it comes to asking for assistance, but always approach mentorship with a sense of awareness and gratitude — not everyone you admire will have the desire to take a genuine interest in your progress, and those who do may have limited resources. Of course, never forget that there are no limits on how many mentors we can share our journeys with!

The Rewards Of Becoming A Mentor

Alongside finding the right mentors in life, what are the rewards to be found in becoming a mentor in turn? After all, if we cannot relate to why mentoring is important, how can we expect others to offer this gift to us? Renowned college basketball coach John Wooden famously said: “Mentoring becomes your true legacy. It is the greatest inheritance you can give to others. It is why you get up every day.” Intriguingly, research suggests that acting as mentor also offers great power in terms of living our best lives.

A behavioural science study from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business suggests that those who mentor are less likely to engage in procrastination — a gremlin that most of us have experience in grappling with. The findings indicated that advising others is one of the best things we can do to increase our own confidence, and shed any hesitant tendencies. Another study from Cambridge Judge Business School revealed that acting as a mentor also offers a boost to mental health, helping to reduce anxiety — particularly, and counter-intuitively, among those in high-pressure roles. So, what’s the take-away? Be open to potential mentors, or seek them out if you prefer to. When opportunity arises, be bold and reach out. And lastly, when you have something of value to share, or you see potential in someone who has not yet seen it themselves, be sure to pass on the baton. That way, we can all ascend together.

Why You Need Mentors In Your Life

PART I

Along your journey so far, has your path crossed with a mentor or two? Perhaps it was a teacher in school who gave you great advice on entering the world of work. Maybe it was a boss who helped you to find the confidence you needed, or a colleague who encouraged you ride in their slip stream, before boosting you off on your own trajectory! Forging a bond with a mentor holds the power to move mountains in terms of what we can achieve. Bill Gates once described Warren Buffet as a mentor, while for Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou was the mentor that helped her find her calling. Whatever you aspire to, during your time here on this strange revolving rock — whether it’s wealth, health, acclaim, prosperity, or any combination of the above — the right mentors can help to propel you in that dream direction.

What Defines The Role Of A Mentor?

A mentor entering your life may assist you in moving the needle in any number of different areas. For many, the first idea of a mentor’s role falls within the scope of career, but the mentor you need might also help you to attain new levels of self care, discipline, or happiness. They may coach you in marketing or finance — but equally, they could be the person that spurs you to build stronger relationships, or start that philanthropic project you always fantasised about. Blaz Cos, author of The Psychology Of Productivity, defines the ideal mentor as someone who believes in you, someone who shows you the way, someone who brings out the best in you, and someone who challenges you. He also shares another vital clue: “Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will. Mentors are by far the best doubt killers.”

Research from mentoring.org revealed a host of benefits to young adults who worked with a mentor, including that they became 130% more likely to progress into leadership positions, 81% more likely to participate in sports and hobbies, and fascinatingly, 90% more likely to be interested in becoming a mentor themselves. Key in unleashing such a positive cascade of impacts, however, is identifying a mentor who is a great fit. A fruitful mentoring relationship will only come about when a mentor/mentee dynamic offers reward for both, and genuine human connection.
