Another future father, a future millionaire maybe, young 22 year old boy with a promising future lost to suicide after losing his school fees, and that of his friend to sport betting due to gambling addiction..

We all have a role to play even as gamblers whenever we notice that someone around us is struggling with gambling addiction. We should not say that it is their problem to deal with. We should look for a way to get involved and help them. Maybe a personal issue at home has forced them to take up that lifestyle as an escape route but then it never solves the problem. It sad that this young soul is gone. Maybe if he had someone to talk to while he contemplated suicide, he may have been talked out of it but no one. So even while we emphasize on gambling responsibly, we should look out for those who gamble irresponsibly and help them.

What a sad story. No matter how good you are in real life or in your past, it can possibly be  tainted once you became an addict. You can make irrational decisions that can affects other especially you when things go bad. It's a sad thing that this gambler considered suicide as a way to escape his problems. This kind of addiction is on a deep level since the gambler is doing things that people in his surroundings will be affected. I hope that no one in this forum today is considering the thing that this boy did. There are a lot of ways to resolve a problem, and curing the addiction you have is the priority beyond all.

Suicide does not solve the problem, because the debt is usually passed on to relatives. So you need to weigh everything well before you decide to take this extreme step. And you can always find a way out if you control your emotions. Yes, it can be very difficult - but you have to overcome yourself and make conclusions for the future.

Young people right now tend to easily commit suicide when things go wrong, i know it is somewhat called depression as they dont know what to do and for sure they will say that nothing can solved this but the problem starts more when you commit it. I hope before committing suicide they should always think abou their family because for sure they would be suffering if you will die and also you are right they have more problems. Money we can earn it back but with life you can't bring it back so dont ever do it
Maybe only some of this we know that there are still many gamblers who commit suicide out there because they are in debt because they are heavy addicts so they decide to commit suicide, this news is only a handful that may be published and I'm sure many are not exposed to the media, mostly those who end their lives are usually in debt that they can no longer afford and of course bring shame to their families too.

I'm sure there are many reasons that make them emphasize themselves that suicide is the only way to solve the problem, even though it's not the way to solve the problem, this needs to be an afterthought for other heavy addicts so they don't become like this and gamble too much.
You are very correct mate, I also thought about this while reading this news yesterday, I could only with my mind Imagine how many of incidents like this that do not get exposed to the media, most especially, those that happen in the rural areas where the media hardly covers, like over here in my country, there are parts the media never goes to unless on special invitation, and internet is available in all this places, gamblers live there too...

This is indeed a lesson for every gambler to checkmate  ourselves, most especially, those addicted, this can encourage many to always think twice about their decisions.

This guy probably must have suffered from depression. I don't believe that a person with good mental health would do such thing.
Committing suicide because you have lost money?!? This is absurd. Losing money is not the end of the world. Debts can be repaid, money can be earned. Life cannot be returned after someone have lost it. Life is more important than the money.
You can say life is more important than money because you still have money and you might already enjoy your life, this is different with depressed person when he think he already lose everything. Sure he can work and he can pay his debt until he death, but he will not enjoy every single day since he only work to payback the mistake he have done.

A depressed person can commit suicide because he don't have anything anymore, while a good mental person is fear of death because he don't want to lose anything he have and he want to achieve something.

It's really a shame, this is really one of those sad stories that really tell the dark side of sports betting and gambling in general, I could not help it, but had tears rolling down my cheek while reading this story..

Another future father, a future millionaire maybe, young 22 year old boy with a promising future lost to suicide after losing his school fees, and that of his friend to sport betting due to gambling addiction..

We are in the 21st century, until when before people realize that suicide does not put an end to problem, but rather create more for those living??

This is really a sad story though, ya all can read it on https://punchng.com/how-ogun-student-committed-suicide-after-losing-school-fees-to-sports-betting/?utm_source=telegram&utm_medium=social

I hope we all as gamblers learn a thing or two from this, and go back and look at our gambling life and see if there is a thing or two that needs to be adjusted..
I pray non of us, and any of our relative shall ever be a victim of such a sad story 😢😢.
this is just heartbreaking and I really feel bad for his parents, they sound like good people and worked hard to give their kid an education. it's just too bad their child fell victim to gambling addiction. this is why gambling awareness and gambling addiction helplines should have more exposure to the public.

this is tragic, everyone in the story lost something because of gambling addiction.
Maybe the parents have educated their children well but maybe it was because of the child's association that made him familiar with gambling and eventually made him addicted. This is the responsibility of parents who must pay attention to their children and their association so that their children are not misguided and can choose good friends who will not cause trouble.

Better to direct our children to other things that are more positive so they don't do activities that can harm their lives when they are adults. This is a valuable lesson for parents always to take good care of their children.

I remember another horror story about a guy, who lost all his savings in a ponzi scheme and he committed suicide(he served in the military).
Not related to gambling, but I can't understand why would somebody end his life just because he lost money.

I'm really sorry to hear about such a sad story. Yes, the consequences of gambling addiction can be devastating, affecting not only the individual but also those around them. It's sad that some individuals who find themselves in such a desperate situation often struggle to reach out for support or confide in their loved ones. They may isolate themselves, feeling trapped and hopeless.

How can we as a society create a more supportive environment for individuals struggling with gambling addiction? How can we encourage a more responsible gambling culture that emphasizes moderation and healthy boundaries? These are the questions we really need to answer if we want to avoid or at least lower the chances of these sad stories happening again in the future.

I think we are already at the limits of what it can be achieved when trying to protect those which may be vulnerable to compulsive behaviors, the only other option left would be to ban gambling completely, and this is not an option as this not only will not protect those people as they could still gamble at illegal casinos, but this will also affect those which live out of the gambling industry all over the world, so while this is a sad story there is not much we can do to prevent things like this to keep happening.

I doubt there's anyone else who pushed him to buy a harmful insecticide and ingest it. He already lost before but was bailed out by his parents. It's probably losing his money for school fees the second time and the stealing of his friends money then losing it again that lead to his wrong decision. It his guilt and maybe the fact that he's afraid what his father may do to him.
after reading the article provided by the OP and responding to some of the replies I tried going to google to search regarding this issue.

1. Depressed mood (sometimes irritability in children and adolescents) most of the day, nearly every day.
2. Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities most of the day, nearly every day (as indicated by either subjective account or observation by others of apathy most of the time)
3. Significant weight loss/gain.
4. Insomnia/hypersomnia (Impaired sleeping or sleeping too much).
5. Psychomotor agitation/retardation (restlessness or reduced movement).
6. Fatigue (loss of energy).
7. Feelings of worthlessness (guilt).
8. Impaired concentration or indecisiveness.
9. Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.
from the case that OP wrote regarding gambling using his school money and ending in suicide there was no encouragement from anyone except mental pressure triggered by guilt because maybe he had used his friend's money to gamble and lost.
on the one hand, pressure from other problems because he was afraid that his father would be angry when he found out that this had happened, so there were many factors that caused the man to swallow insecticides, but only encouragement from stress, depression or mental pressure.

I am just imagining the pain this young guy went through before he took his life. Rather than fighting against his addiction he succumbed to it. I feel extremely sorry for the family and his friends. I am also angry why non of them intervened when he started sports betting. Why none of them questioned him? Who knows they might have but in the end the outcome of his addiction went on to take his life.

Such incidents may be happening daily but only a few gets reported. The society doesn't care about the addicts as they are all busy living their lives. If they had then a lot of them would have returned to their normal lives.

Anyway, it is very sad that this is happening, and without knowing the specific details I would venture to think that there is something else behind it, as losing your school fees is a reason to be ashamed but to take it to suicide is very extreme. Maybe there are other things we don't know or it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

We cannot help anyone here. The victim should be responsible for his demise only. We all know gambling is addictive hence we should be careful from our side only. We should only gamble the funds which we can afford to lose. Moreover set a fix amount for gambling and don’t gamble if you cross the limit. It’s very sad to hear that the victim crossed all the limits and used the funds which was required to pay the fees. We cannot blame the bookies here also, as the victim needed to be careful by him only.

This is the worse that could happen to one of your family or friends committing suicide because of gambling, the guy has so much guilt about what he did and it becomes unbearable for him, no one deserves this he failed to ask for help on the times he badly needs it.

We should always check out the family or friends for signs of depression and guilt if he has a weak character it will lead to this scenario, if you see these signs talk to him and be with him and urge him to get help from professionals, it's the best that we can do for him.

I also pray that no one in the world does such a thing, how can a boy hang his precious life on the rope for a small school fee? One thing I will never understand is how he felt that his suicide or self-sacrifice could atone for his mistake. It should always be said that a life is very valuable for a state. If he had lived he would have given something valuable to his state but his suicide did not bring benefits to the state. Finally I would tell all the students never to take such a decision out of excessive tension or anger.

According to the article, this happened before about him spending his school fees and use it on sports betting. The parents are aware of his gambling activity but clearly unable to control their son to stop this habit. Then it came to worst when he spent his school fees as well as his friend's money on sports betting. He can't handle the situation so he chose to end his life not knowing it can only create more problems to the living people. It's really a sad story and a lesson for gamblers to think before using their money in gambling.

Suicide is not a solution for every problem. Unfortunately some people are thinking it's the only way to stop the depressing situation that they have been going through. In times like this it's important that you have someone that can talk to that will give you advices and cheer you up to never lose hope.

Precisely as I have just said, this person could have used the advice on 'perfecting' your gambling, which I would rather call common sense gambling. Had he followed the steps, he would not have lost his school fees, because he would not have gambled them away.

There's situation that suicide has ever helped made it easier but rather aggravates the situation leaving the loved ones of the suicide victim in a disturbing and sad state. No matter how bad we think the consequences of our actions may turn out to be suicide is never an option to escaping it cause there's no shame losing or messing up cause everyone of us has messed up at one point or the other in life but in different ways.

As gamblers we should avoid using money not meant for gambling to gamble there's no magic about it that you expect you're going to win and double the cash. For if it wasn't meant for gambling then it wasn't meant for gambling just know this and know good. If we all should build such mentality then it's gonna save us from having such awful experience. Always say NO to suicidal thoughts.
