Given the costs involved, pushing any power supply over 100% load (or even 89-90%) is really unnecessary and asking for trouble. It's a little different than a GPU rig where you have 4 5970s worth $1200 on a 1200W PSU, another $300 for a nice PSU is a pretty minimal charge compare to the cost of eight 54GH/s bASICs.

There was a review of the 1200W Corsair PSU where they measured you could easily pull out more than 1500W from the power supply before it shuts itself off due to overload.

Try a NXZT Hale 90 1000. You can pull 2000w from it for 3 months before it pops (although I seriously do NOT recommend this)

There you have it guys, thats the power estimation, now we know its NOT "up to 10 27GH bASIC" devices.
So, power consumption is anywhere between 1.85w/GH to 2.31w/GH

I'd guess lower than the 1.85W/GH due to cablepairs usage of "easily".

I personally would not say a 1000W power supply can "easily" power a 1000W load.
I would say that a 1000W power supply can "easily" power a 850W load. Wink

I believe what abracadabra posted is correct. The board is supposed to have a female 4pin molex as well as a female DC coaxial connector.  
My understanding was that it is to be a center +ve 2.1mmID 5.5mmOD type.

I also see from the bASIC website that a power adapter aka "wall wart" does not appear to be included in the accessories so you will probably have to provide your own.

I would wait though for Tom to confirm these points.

Are you sure it's the 2.1mm ID barrel connector?  There is also a type with 2.5mm ID.

If you use a "wall wart", you will need one that supplies quite a few amps.  To supply 100W at 12V, it would need to handle 8.333A.  You can get 12V "power brick"-style adapters on eBay rated up to 10A.

I plan to use an ATX power supply myself.  I trust their quality and output stability more than I do random wallwarts.  I'd hate to kill a thousand-dollar piece of hardware because I powered it using a crappy wallwart.

As I said that was my understanding from previous pages reading. The exact post I cannot find now. Embarrassed   Tom will let us know. The 2.5mmID 5.5mmOD type is going to be used on the BFL SC singles.

Browsing the connectors on digikey, I can't even find any in the 2.1mm size that are rated to carry more than 5A.  In the 2.5mm size they have a few rated for 10A.

BTW you can get 12V server PSUs ranging from 300W to 1kW on eBay for about 10USD. These PSUs have a high quality and are a cheap solution to power your mining hardware.*

What you get is a copied power supply , with MOST of the safety features and EMI filters removed, coils that have been wound with pubic hair and X2 Capacitors that were really Y1 but had the markings erased and re-printed.

Basically you get a Fire lighter in a plastic box.
You sure do like calling people out, don't you? I purchased an IBM 1300W 12V PSU made by Delta off eBay for $20 a few months ago, and smaller ones are easily available for $10.

Using a Pi doesn't stop you using a PSU. You don't need a PC to turn a PSU on.

My concern about PSUs is I only have a 900W and a 850W. I'll be running 1x54G 1x24G 1xBFLSC 1xBFLlilSC.
I can only run the bASICs off the PSU, so I think i'll end up running them from the wall, with clunky US>NZ adaptors.

NO!!!!!!
It is a switched mode(SM) power supply not a wall wart Iron cored bitch, as you increase the loading the  Switched mode changes its operating parameters to meet the requirements. NEVER use an Iron cored transformer in such a situation, it is a MASSIVE waste of power .

What DOES happen, as you increase the Capability of the SM power supply the Base wastage figure increases.

So it may be that with NO load 2*400W actually consume less power than a 1*800w, basically it comes down to the leakage of the switching transistors and the Inductors.  BIGGER inductors are more wasteful.
This is where the difference between the CRAP you can buy on Ebay comes in, Normally such crap is made from the components that do not meet the specs for high quality SM power supplies.
 I.E switching transistors that are so leaky that they sell under the "Titanic" brand name.

which is a highly efficient and top notch PSU - as far as I know the only PSU certified to platinum efficiency status is Seasonic.

I would have to agree, I've got one of these in my main PC, it's quiet modular and powerful.  It's by far the nicest PSU I've ever purchased.

Problem is, that it does absolutely NOTHING to  expedite the requirements or shipping, the same way putting "Made in Japan" on an Export box does not get it through customs, given that the export carton is buried inside a 40Ft container inside a ship carrying maybe 10,000 containers.
It's the  "Declaration of conformity"  paperwork that accompanies a product shipment  that the customs look at.

They're usually most efficient around 50% load, but using the 850W will still be more efficient than using power bricks.

It could be lower than 1.85J/GH (or W/(GH/s), but you get my meaning). Tom said "easily power 8-10 54GH/s bASICS".

If it's easy to power 8-10 it should be easy to power 10. I suspect this fuzzy estimation is because he knows the absolute worst case scenario for power requirements and it probably involves bASICS running at more than 54Gh/s (through better mining software or overclocking) in this worst case 8 should be the max. But in a more likely configuration (no or small speedup) 10 should have a healthy margin : <1.85J/GH.
