Totally agree with OP. Bitcoin could be compared to digital gold. Since it is one of the first cryto currencies and is definitely expensice as anything. But there are not much uses and projects under Bitcoin. On the other hand, Ethereum is younger still than Bitcoin but it has way more uses and projects under their belt. Even converting alt coins to Bitcoins need to be exchanged to Ethereum first.
in my opinion bitcoin is of course very different from ethereum you can see from the very limited supply of bitcoin and from very high demand make bitcoin and ethereum very different.
Basically Both are good cryptocurrencies but bitcoin is a most popularity & other ETH not so big popularity. Bitcoin price high & ETH not so high & also there are many different this both cryptocurrencies
Bitcoin is the king of cryptocurrency and Ethereum is queen of cryptocurrency. This two coins are shining in the market from long.As compared to the percentage of investors in this two coins is greater than all altcoin. Now a days many ICO is depend on Ethereum and this made huge investors in Ethereum.

I think that btc is more popular but in reality they have many common features and this can explain the great popularity of ether as well as btc. i m sure that btc is the best of the best but ether is a real rival of btc

Bitcoin and Etherium are powered by the principle of distributed ledger's and cryptogrphy, the two differ in many technical ways. For example the programming language used by etherium is turning complete whereas Bitcoin is in stack based language. Other differences include block time ( Ethereum transaction is confirmed in seconds compared to minutes for bitcoin ) and their basic builds ( Ethereum uses ethash while bitcoin uses secure hash algorithm, SHA 256) 
In other hand ethereum are now in competing with bitcoin for popularity and demands with investors looking both which are the great potential of investment in decentralized technology.
For the sake of argument, let's assume Ethereum is indeed decentralized, then everything running on top of it is heavily subject to Ethereum's centralization. The only reason it is not a big deal for projects yet, is because they only care about noobs buying their ICO tokens. This will change eventually, where ICO's will no longer seek to run on top of something, but just operate their own blockchain that they can scale as they wish.
Also don't forget that everything running on top of Ethereum is directly pumping worthless data into its blockchain, which will lead to less nodes, and more node congestion amonst smaller groups of entities.
They are two different blockchains and they cover different niches. bitcoin was designed to be used principally as a means of payment while ethereum was designed to take care of Smart contracts
Bitcoin for me is the main crypto and this is the major in crypto trading , yes ethereum is a digital petroleum because this is gas to transfer our erc20 tokens to other ethereum address .I agree with you, ethereum have more purpose and good for long term investment .
Ethereum differs from bitcoin in concept of functioning and slightly different technology.
It's very prosperous coin with good value but unlike bitcoin it can be so widely used and it will never be at the same position as bitcoin is. Also I don't expect that it will ever reach so high value as bitcoin.

Thank you for sharing that, in my opinion most of us including me are drastically uneducated in this questions, and maybe the overall market and stability is caused also because of that we don't actually fully understand in what we are involved in.
