1) gavin gave me a few bitcoin in 2010, but i've lost access to them. Am I a user?

2) gavin gave me a few bitcoin in 2010, I still have access to them, but I don't do anything else with bitcoin. Am I a user?

3) i gave my friend some bitcoin to play with. He doesn't even remember this. Is he a user?

It seems to me the survey is pretty much unanswerable as it stands. Needs a properly defined question.

Props to you. Very sound logic.
Yes, he sounds very logical. It is very important that the survey should provide detail information because there are many factors to consider when answering this type of question. Yoou can't just jump into conclusion in answering the question.

As I see some people here even voted for "what is bitcoin?" Must be that was a joke, cause if you are here you have to know what is bitcoin for sure.
I think bitcoin use over 2 million of people. The most number of users in China, India and USA. So by my calculation 1 million of users in China, close to 1 in India and about half of the million users in USA and something the same for all remaining world. But professional reseaurses  can give you more clear statistic than mine.

Here in the philippines bitcoins is not much popular because many people close their mind in this business they want a business that not coming from the internet or computer, just only few peoples only using bitcoins here maybe after 3 to 5 years bitcoin will become popular here and other stores will use it for payment purposes.

Adoption would  really takes  time especially to those   developing countries  out there.  It would really be hard  to  introduce bitcoin  on their  businesses  because  people  do always used to  use  fiat and  they  dont tend  to accept bitcoin on their   goods or services.

I guess some definition about the users of bitcoin and can break into some part of that.
How long the people are using bitcoin and can be categorized into the bitcoiners? this question is so vague for me. the simple definition of the users are the people can utilizing the usefulness of stuff. there is no the people are not using the usefulness of a stuff and that's can't be including on the definition of users.

I would guess that the total number of people that use Bitcoin to be somewhere around 5-6 million and growing. I voted for the 5 million to 15 million option, but would not be surprised if even more people than that use it in the next few years after learning about the advantages of Bitcoin. Since Bitcoin is mostly an anonymous currency, we would have no idea how many people actually use it, which is the beauty of it. With over 7 billion people in the world, and more than 3 billion people using the internet, the ones who do use Bitcoin are still a small community in comparison.

Props to you. Very sound logic.

I wanted the discussion to flow without too many constraints. The wisdom of the crowd is usually a pretty good predictor of facts.

Bittorrent say they have around 30m users a day, but they also claim to have around 170m users. Over the course of their lifetime, it could be that over 1.5Bn people have used their software.

You can make stats do and say what you want.

Very true, stats are easily manipulated. Basic logic definitely is your best friend.  If you've ever mined bitcoin then you know the miners are paid out every day. I alone was a member of four different pools and received payments from them daily. If there are 25,000 people mining and each of them receives payments four times a day then there is 100,000 of the 250,000 daily transactions. In all likelihood, there are far fewer daily purchase transactions than anyone really wants to admit.

bitcoin user number can not be predicted. but this time I think has a lot of users bitcoin.
bitcoin is growing and shows that bitcoin is the financial system is needed in the future.
Even as the number of people using bitcoin cannot be predicted there are many statistical method that one can try to
do some estimation. Lot of factors that may help us on finding bitcoin users like how many bitcoin address and one person on average how many bitcoin address will have like that.

And what will this estimation tell us? In other words, what is the purpose of knowing the number of people holding bitcoins after all? If the aim is to estimate the expansion (or contraction, for that matter) of the Bitcoin ecosystem over time, closely following the number of transactions with unique addresses at both ends per unit of time seems to suffice. And these statistics are easily obtainable since all required data is already in the blockchain...

There are probably other metrics as well which could be used for such a purpose

I think someone may do a prediction or estimate but certainly it will not give the exact picture of the number of existing users, it is a picture of the number of users bitcoin, may be approached
yeah there are several methods to determine the number of users bitcoin, perhaps by counting users at various sites that related to bitcoin

We can't actually say how many are bitcoiners ,from the OP well it is clearly we dont count it based on their counting on blockchain wallets because some of bitcoin user use as many as they can and we never know the users who just created a blockchain wallet and leave ,forget about bitcoins there so many situation like that even bitcoin wallets on our country made there are so many users but how many user who are active using it .

By just looking around us, I don't think there's even 1 million bitcoin users in population. There are only 800,000 accounts registered in this forum. Removing the account farmers, dead or inactive accounts, and those people that have alt accounts, we can reduce the number into 100,000 or maybe even less. In crypto-related facebook groups that I am in, we're just ranging 10,000 and most of them aren't actually posting. Some of them might not even be aware that they are in that group.

TL;DR: By just looking around us, we can easily conclude that there isn't that much bitcoin users.

Maybe 10 millions?  100 millions maybe?  We can't actually count the range of people using bitcoin right now. But as far as I know bitcoin has a lot more exposure now and lots of people in the world know bitcoin. So bitcoin users is increasing everyday. And that would be a plus to millions of users now.

I don't think we can count how many user of bitcoin because we don't have any cue, we can't count from wallet address, we can't count from wallet account, and all of the users are anonymous and most of them want to stay hidden, so I don't think  there is any way to know how many bitcoin user

Yes i agree to you dude. We can't predict the exact number or result of how many millions of people join or using bitcoin. As long as it is progressive and it can help to users earning extra money, for sure it will be more progressive, more usable, and more users to used bitcoin.
