BTC and ETH is good coin for investment and hold it.
If you choose bitcoin or ethereum for investment, then I think you will definitely not lose, these are the fundamental coins that will always be needed and in price they will only grow. You can take a chance and take something from the altcoins, but this is a risk, although it can give a big profit, but I think it's better to choose an investment more reliable.
I think that it is not worth investing in such popular coins as BTC, ETH and others. 500 $ is not a large sum for investing, which it is not a pity to lose. If I were you, I would choose some coins with good potential, for about 0.5 or 1 cents, and invest in them. So you would have the likelihood of multiplying your investment.
What's the best way to diversify starting with $500. I am overwhelmed right now with all the coins i am interested in. I'm just not sure if i should be only focused on the top 10 or can i pick xxx coin that's ranked between #40-#150. I can say i like about 15-20 coins/tokens i just feel that's way to many for $500. I would like to put half in blue chip coin and invest in some alts with the remaining half. I was thinking put $50 into 4 atls???

Ethereum and then an alt coin of your choice if you're going to go purely alt coins and not bitcoins. I chose ethereum because it is the building blocks of future alt coins in development. I'm pretty sure you can make a pretty penny when investing on ethereum or using it to invest on ICOs.
for sure if you want the profit you want to invest it in bitcoin or buy bitcoin because knowing that when the august gets the bitcoin increases and many believe it so buy bitcoin while the price is lower and you just hold it for Get your profit bigger.
With me $ 500 is not an amount too large, nor too small. With $ 500 it will be hard for you to make a profit at this time. I also add as I think what was missing is patient. It is all about in the right time at the right price to buy, hold and sell to have a little profit to make it more progressive in the due time.
I think $500 is a good amount to begin with. If your just new to crypto, I think you should invest in stablished, trusted, and reliable coin like bitcoin and ethereum.

I would advice you to take a closer look at ZIL and ONT, they are in correction now. To my view, both projects have strong communities, experienced developers and very ambitious plans for 2018-2019 years.
