You just have to be careful which one you choose. Not all ICOs will just run away with the money. Look for the ones with good website and the ones that look like they already put some work into it.
It would also be interesting to define what scam is. Since we have so many coins nowadays and many of them are just using the market to pump and dump and being accused of such (NXT or XVG anyone?)

Everything that can be raising fund in any way can be potentially scam in the end. No matter how they called it in the end something new will come up always.
We have seen so many ICO that ended up as scam.

Truly ICO's can get you big profit in terms of rapidity. However the only drawback is that its difficult to tell which one is real or fake. I highly suggest you to do some digging about the project before you jump into that. There are a lot of Altcoins lately you can make big profit if you invest in the right ones

Yes, I agree with you ICO is the modern Ponzi method this time. There are a lot of ICO project right now. But all are not the good project. some of are scams. But it is too difficult to find out the bad project. That's why before investing any ICO you have to review everything perfectly.
