If Ethereum dies any time soon that would probably affect a lot of the current ICOs that are using it as a payment method. Not sure how that makes me feel.

Those smart contracts will be affected for real and those token's too. But there's no way for ETH to die, it's like bitcoin that many are holding and waiting for it's dump.

dump those eth boys, the sharks are waiting

This is what I'm talking about, they are just waiting to see the price of ETH dying and they will be the ones to revive Ethereum again.

it is not a question of IF it is a question of when people realize Ethereum is not the best option for smart contracts out there. and it doesn't have to fail as in fall to zero for them to realize this. it is all about efficiency, how well it is performed and how cheap or expensive the whole process is both in money and time that it takes.

right now there is RSK (Rootstock) which will work on bitcoin blockchain (the most trusted and secure and well known blockchain) and it will be practically free to make a smart contract using it.

It is not therefore necessary for Etherium, and any other projects offering smart contracts for that matter, to die before projects realized they need to move to another smart contract. I know there will always be upgrades in the existing smart contracts and there will be more smart contract options to be born. There will be tighter competition.

If that didn't work you may as well comeback and use ETC.

If ETH will die I think ETC will get affected to since those currency has been made by one splitted network, And those coins who used the Etherium blockchain will die also and this could bring a crypto-currency crisis if this one will be happen. But its pathetic to think that ETH will die since they've got more supported that not want ETH to get into troubles.

That would be very poor for crypto in general. It needs more successes, not explosive failures. Bitconnect for example seems like a ticking time bomb that's going to blow one day; and that's going to cost a lot of people a lot of money and be a huge black eye for crypto yet again. Added to the list of Mt. Gox etc.

I want to see Ethereum weather this storm of ICO uncertainty and come out on the other end successful. There's room for many successful coins. It doesn't all have to be bitcoin only.

I don't believe ethereum dies, or can die. It has a solid team who can solve every problem they face on this roadmap. If ethereum dies, we have waves and neo. Waves will generate smart contracts in the future. Neo as well.

... what would/will be the next most promising smart contract platform for the eth-based projects to migrate to?

Some people say it's Tez0s

Smart contracts have been used only for scams. We now see smart contracts don't have any real world use... Perhaps on day they will but not on a public blockchain. Ethereum is an experiment and may never work. Bitcoin is past the experimental stage.

I don't know for what companies you work guys...or what job you have, but in my job, I see tons of big SNP500 and DJI companies: all of them have an ETH project planned for 2018.
(budgets are decided now for next year)

2018 = year of ETH for professional use.

IF ethereum dies...
Greed and panic will be the root cause.
When times were good people jumped in too fast and drove the price close to 15% of King Bitcoin. Now there is panic and prices are down over 50% from the high. "Common sense" will tell you this is the wrong time to buy, so this is probably a great time to pick up some ETH.

Buy low/ Sell High = Buy ETH now: Especially if you can afford to buy more if your timing is a bit off.

If Etherium dies... well, uhm, it won't die. It's just that, my friend.

It is, on the contrary, growing.

So, if I were you, I would be buying ETH, a significant amount, and hold it for some time. The price will still grow some more. You will reap profits if you have ETH right now.  Wink
It can't die and price will higher, with ETH any person can deploy code that is as secure, even more secure, than that of the worlds largest banks and their servers. Hope to see $500 end year.
This year only from the infant level it has started to grow, right at the moment thinking all about the death of ethereum is simply not gonna happen. As the mate stated the price will increase higher along with the growth of bitcoin. Recently when bitcoin decreases, a decrease in ethereum too is experienced.
Guess what, Ethereum's price and growth have nothing to do with bitcoin, so many people nowadays have seen ethereum and bitcoin as two different currencies, many ICOs now use ETH as their main currency basically because of their smart contract.
One more thing, the dominance of BTC is now decreasing. Just because ETH and BTC dumped at the same time, doesn't mean it have some sort of relation or what.

Ethereum is big, money of investors used for public relations, fake news sites, bribes.
It big industry of lie.
It worcking, just white a time, ppl buy it good now. It good investment.
But it not protected investment, when this ppl sold hes 70,000,000 ETH (also used for pumpUp ICOs) you will get only something overpriced and useless.

if it dies many of other cryptocurrencies may be affected. but when it dies, there are so many currencies to look upon to like dodge or litecoin. but in my opinion it will live like bitcoin and it will improve and grow as time goes by. the question is hypothetical.
