I unzipped and ran it, but the apps window was completely empty ...

Sorry about that, we're actually uploading a new build right now that has some apps packed in (as well as a working auto-updater). It should be ready to go in about 15 minutes.

Edit: Uploaded.

Looks great Smiley  I'm looking for a new wallet to use now the blockchain is too big for me to store anymore.  I think I'll go with multibit or electrum for now though until this has had more bug testing done, but it's looking good!

Thank you for saying so!

We would definitely recommend Electrum and MultiBit, which are both excellent light wallets. Please feel free to give us a try in a few months though; everything should be much smoother and safer then. ;-)

BitcoinKit also supports bitcoinj now, and that's what we're using. We have some work to do with integrating a VM (so users don't have to download one), but once that is in place it is fully functional as an SPV node.

Edit: No, it does not require Homebrew. Props to the Homebrew developers for making Hive easier to build though!

Nice.

Does that require bitcoind?
BitcoinKit seems to require it.

Edit: and also, does it require homebrew?

App Platform

Hive's application platform gives new users a tightly integrated way to discover the best of what's out there: exchanges, merchants, games, and more!

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is Hive open source?
A: Yes! The GPL-licensed code is available on GitHub.

Q: Is Hive available in languages other than English?
A: Yes! Quite a number of them already, as you can see from this forum post.

Q: Is it really safe for novices to use, right now?
A: We think so, and we are using it on a day-to-day basis with real Bitcoin ourselves.

Q: How can I build an app for Hive?
A: Please see this forum post.

Q: Will you support Windows or Linux?
A: Not unless an exceptional developer steps up. Please contact us if you have the skills and would like to be involved!

Q: Will you support Android or iOS?
A: Yes to Android, native iOS support is probably off the table due to Apple's general despotism. Try hive-js for an alternative.

Q: How do you make money?
A: Our plan is to take very small fees for transactions that happen within non-charity apps in the App Platform. At present this is not implemented.
