You're right about investing in ICOs to be risky due a lot of ICO scam and some ICO owner/team not fulfilling the promises made concern the project but I'm a kind of person that believe every problem has it own solution. Therefore, ICO scam or some project not having the right utility shouldn't be an excuse for us because everything about online investment opportunities base on time and if not use very well the opportunity may not come anymore. Investing in ICO is risky because nowadays there's a lot scam ICO came out, so it hink it better to choose the best one, which is have potential or make a research about it to avoid getting scam ICO. If you want to invest in cryptocurrencies, first I recommend investing in bitcoin. And hold bitcoin for a long time. Why I don't recommend you invest in altcoin, because there are many risks with altcoin. Maybe they only exist for a year or two.
