If I were to Invest in Crypto Currency is that I will choose the best Coin in the Market. Make some research about that coin and also Check the Development of that Coin. There some coins has it's own Potential that will really grow in the future, I will named one of the coin I know has huge potential in the market of music is OPUS. I suggest when it comes in Investment always think of a long time profit.
Now BTC on a minimum - 7.5K think this is a good time to buy. Although there is a risk of falling. BTC is a risky investment. 
My personal opinion to invest your 5,000 USD is as follows;
1. 50% of total: invest on Bitcoin or Etherium
2. 30% of total: invest on identified coins which having good potential
3. 20% of total: invest on good, futuristic ICO which having good potential for growth
However before doing this, you should have proper ideal on selecting coins and selecting ICOs for investing. You should have done proper reading, researching for achieving this and should be with crypto industry. This is some kind of safest method for crypto investments.

If you want to play safe so go to the top coin only. For long term this top coins surely will rises. If you wanna play high risk coins/tokens you can join ICOs. But make sure you already have make a lot of research by your own and confirm it was the best icos from other. Icos sure make a high profit and sure will make a hugh loose also so beware at it.
Choose bitcoin and ethereum (or any other bitcoin that tends to be stable) for long-term investments. New altcoin is perfect for the short term. The important thing is not to invest only on one type of coin. It would be better to allocate the money you will invest into several different coins.

I advise you to buy and invest in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin. These three coins are perfect if you make as a long-term investment asset. You can buy some of these coins and you hold for several years to get a satisfactory result.
If I were you, I would invest 50% for a long term, and I would research the market and spend the rest for buying different altcoins.
