Yeah it has been indefinitely postponed. I do not see any possibility of this season happening this year. India Government has already extended the lockdown till May and after May there will be restriction to gathering and organising events. So, forget IPL this year.

See.. if IPL 2020 happens, then it needs to start within the next few months. Because we have IPL 2021 starting in March 2021. So in case they schedule a tournament during October or November this year, then there will be a lot of viewer fatigue and the TV revenues will go down massively for the next year's edition. For the BCCI, the best thing to do is to call off this years tournament. They can make it up, by organizing a larger tournament next year. For example, they can add two new teams and make it a 10-team tournament.
Don't forget we have T-20 World cup as well. so 3 back to back tournament ( 2 IPL and T-20WC) seems overdose along with unnecessary bilateral series.

On another topic which is related to bilateral series, BCCI should do some brainstorming in this free time and try to work on some Tri or Quad series for ODI and T-20, instead of bilateral series.

I saw that this year IPL has been completely cancelled officially by BCCI while surfing on my mobile.Did anyone see that from official twitter accounts?

According to my information it's suspended, not cancelled. Plz scroll up, I have posted updates. They didn't posted anything on twitter but it's official announcement.

The news from the centre is With India in lockdown, IPL 2020 suspended till further notice

This was expected and this is now official.
Okay, just now visited the official announcement and highly no chance of playing this year based of cricbuzz statement. And I don't think they will host matches on statiums which are mentioned by other members because they may not get enough audicence to watch and also we don't know that we will control corona in that real soon.

All the sports events are getting postponed for this year including the Olympics and Euro. We may remember 2020 as a No Sporting Year where no major sports event took place.

Surely history will remember this as Lock down because most of countries in serious trouble and biggest population living in lock down even few parts of world have order shot at sight for this all.

According to the directives from the Home Ministry, India have been divided in to three zones. After the current lockdown is complete, indications are that the restrictions will be completely lifted in the green zone (which include districts such as Trivandrum, Shimoga, Aligarh, Gorakhpur, Bathinda, Nagaon.etc). Is it viable to schedule the IPL in these rural locations?

Do India have cricket stadiums of international standards in these rural areas which you mentioned ?  I never heard any international match which took place in those venues in India.

Oh, come on. Trivandrum is not a rural area. It might not be a metropolitan but it's definitely one of the best cities to live and work. And yeah Trivandrum has a stadium called University Stadium. Actually they are two adjoining stadiums belonging to the Kerala University, the oldest one which hosted few international matches in the 1980s is a bit small and no longer used for International sports. The new one was built with international standards in the year 2015 and have hosted a T20 and an ODI match as of now.

LOL.. Trivandrum do have an international cricket ground, and the name is Greenfield International Stadium. So far, it has hosted one T20I (India vs New Zealand in 2017), and one ODI match (India vs West Indies in 2018). But then, this is a multipurpose stadium, which is also used for hosting international football matches (the 2015 SAFF Championship Final was played there).

I don't think BCCI have any international stadium in these rurl locations and its not possible for them to host all IPL here clearly its suspended and now wait for next official announcement from BCCI after PM orders in first week of May.

I don't think it is viable to schedule the IPL anywhere at this point of time. This would directly endanger the lives of  the cricketers as well as the staff etc.

A single woman in South Korea transmitted COVID-19 to 5000+ people in an instant. That is the raw power of this virus. If the Indians make a similar mistake, just imagine how many people could get affected. Not worth the risk in my opinion.

If yes means no more IPL for this year and BCCI let the people to hold their money for something important rather than entertainment purposes like cricket.

Trivandrum does have one international ground but BCCI don't use this venue much. Punjab and UP (along with Delhi-Mumbai) are not going to entertain IPL in their backyard at this time. Shimoga district  does have cricket stadium but not sure if they are capable of hosting any international game. Can't comment on Assam.

The BCCI realized a long time ago just like everyone else that COVID-19 is here to stay and we won't be free from this pandemic until the end of next year most likely which is why they should have outright cancelled IPL this year and plan for next year(Doubtful).

Instead, they focused on the money aspect and are basically looking for a window wherever possible. Absolute idiots.

There is no point in moving the IPL to any other venue like Srilanka. Why would you move it to sri Lanka becasue the covid-19 cases are less in srilanka ? (Only 238 confirmed cases )
The international players have to come to play in IPL and few of them may not be willing to go to srilanka as per the perception India is the most safest place in the region.
There's no point of moving this edition to Srilanka because they have less confirmed cases. It would be against cooperating with fighting the virus. It's better if this season get cancelled or postponed to a free schedule.

@JSRAW and others there’re two possibilities now 1) you’ll are correct and they’ll try and stage IPL this year, and 2) maybe BCCI knows that organising IPL is not possible this year, and they’re not keen to admit it because they’ll have to pay huge amounts of money upfront to organisers and therefore they’re now buying time before they pay them. Furthermore I don’t think that BCCI will move IPL to Sri Lanka as franchise owners may not be happy with the change in venue, and even their sponsors may not agree to this move.

Just in : Finally some official statement from the BCCI, guess its a first official statement from them since the lock-down announcement.

BCCI officially suspends IPL 2020 indefinitely

Quote
With the Coronavirus pandemic not relenting, the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League has officially been suspended indefinitely by the BCCI. This comes just two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the nation, announcing the extension of the lockdown period until May 3.

"The health and safety of the nation and everyone involved in our great sport remains our top priority and as such, the BCCI along with the Franchise Owners, Broadcaster, Sponsors and all the Stakeholders acknowledge that the IPL 2020 season will only commence when it is safe and appropriate to do so," a BCCI release stated.

What do they mean by the term "indefinitely"? Are they going to "indefinitely" postpone the tournament? If that is the case, then why can't they announce that tournament is cancelled? There is no improvement in the situation here in India and even today we are having more than a thousand new cases. The number of new cases are increasing on a day by day basis and from 20th April there may be another major spike thanks to the relaxation in lockdown.

They have used the term "suspended" to give them some sort of margin and hope if the situation become better later in the year. If they would have cancelled the tournament, they might have to pay a big price and the fans would be disappointed too. By using the term postponed, they have kept the hopes alive.
This is simply political announcement by BCCI as they are not giving up and right now they are unable to have any good news about this so just because of this they are giving statement like this its suspended not cancelled even every one know this year its very difficult as now time is running out and we have no window for this.

Clearly they are still hoping that they might find some window for IPL. Other than that i don't see any explanation behind suspension announcement.

Edit : Interesting update
Sri Lanka ready to host IPL 2020, will provide all facilities for tournament: SLC to BCCI

Snip

Just an attempt to boost their revenues a bit by hosting IPL in Srilanka, But I don't think we'll have IPL this year as I don't see a gap in the yearly calendar.
Yeah it's tough and their motivation is revenue but it's win win situation for both bcci and SLC if it happens. They do have less than 250 covid-19 cases so far. Interestingly they are not pushing for SL vs ENG test series which got cancelled.
